Poetry Madness: Game 8

Image result for how to eat a poemImage result for brand new suit and tie clip art

Read Game 8 poems. Answer each question below. Remember to explain WHY you chose the winner based on poet's craft (rhyme, line breaks, punctuation, simile/metaphor, word choice, repetition) AND your personal connection to the meaning. Don't forget to write with M.I.N.T.S.!

Your post needs to include the following:

1. What is the meaning of the first poem? (Summarize in one sentence)

2. What is the meaning of the second poem? (Summarize in one sentence)

3. Based on the criteria, which poem did you choose and WHY? (Use examples writer's craft to support your answer!)

Here is an example of proficient writing:

The first poem I read was “Life Doesn’t frighten Me.” It is about a girl saying that life doesn’t frighten her. She says that very scary things find their way to her, but she keeps pushing, laughing, smiling, and having a good time, so they get destroyed and leave. I found that this poem contains a great modern life message as well. It is that no matter what happens, we will all come back in the kingdom of God, so we shouldn’t be scared because the Holy Spirit will protect us forever and ever. I infer that the girl who isn’t scared of life is a Christian.

The second poem, “Some One,” is about a man who got a knock at his small door, but there was no one there but a beetle, an owl, a cricket, and dewdrops. He was sure that he got a knock though, but there was nothing stirring besides the four things I just listed, only the dark vortex of night. I infer that it is close to Halloween, and he just got Ding-Dong-Ditched.

In my opinion, “Life Doesn’t Frighten Me” should win because of the masterpiece of a message. It has repetition as well, like the phrase,”Life doesn’t frighten me at all.” It also used personification. For example, geese don’t have names. It lastly used imagery because you get a picture in your mind when it says “dragons breathing flame on my counterpane.” “Life Doesn’t Frighten Me” is an extraordinary poem, and I hope it wins!

  1. The first poem, The New Suit” is about a man talking about his perfect new suit , and thinking about like should he drink this or should he eat that.

The second poem, “How to eat a Poem” is about someone talking about the way you should eat a poem. Pick it up with your hands, and don’t be polite.

I think the winner should be, “How to eat a Poem” because it’s a silly poem. I also like the poem because of a metaphor. For example, for there is no core. Another reason I like this poem is imagery. I can image a cinnamon roll on the table that is ready to eat. I really enjoyed this poem. I hope it wins.

  2. The first poem, “ Some One,” is about someone who was knocking on a wee small door.
But the he opened his door and no one was there were only bugs and insects an owl. Some dew drops fell. This poem uses imagery and personification the imagery is when he looks outside and sees bugs and an owl, and the personification is when the beetle is described.
The second poem,” Life Doesn't Frighten Me,” is about someone's life that doesn’t frighten them and explains why. It talks about what he does in there life. This poem uses rhymes and a lot of imagery in the beginning and explains the details of the poem.
My winner is,”Life Doesn’t Frighten Me,” because it uses details to explain how everything was in his sight. It is also a good poem because it describes that person's life.

The second poem I read was “How To Eat a Poem.” It is about how you do not need to use a knife or spoon. It tells you to use your hands.

The winner is “The New Suit.” because I like the details. The rhyme scheme is ABCDEFGHIJKLM

  4. “How to Eat a Poem” is about someone who is trying to get some to eat a poem. You don’t need a knife, fork, spoon, plate, napkin, and tablecloth. There are no seeds, pits, or skin.

“The New Suit” is about someone who is going to party and weres a new suit. He will not eat ice cream because it could drip on the suit. He is also afriad of chocolate bombs that could explode Happy Birthbay.

I think “The New Suit” is the winner. For example, it uses alliteration “Striped suit” “terrific tie.” I would also be afriad of ice cream and chocolate bombs if I got a new suit.

  5. The first poem,”The New Suit,” is about someone getting ready for a birthday party and says that next year will be different because she will be ready for everything in a birthday party.

The second poem,”How to Eat a Poem,” is about someone saying how to eat a poem. It also states that the poem is ripe and you can lick the juice off of it.

I pick “The New Suit” as the winner because of the personification. I know because it says “And nothing about chocolate bombs that might explode!” I also think it is the winner because of the imagery. I can just imagine what the suit looked like in real life. That is why “The New Suit” should be the winner.

  6. “The New Suit” is about a new suit. The person wears it to a party and has many restrictions about getting it messy. For example, “Don’t eat ice cream because it might drip.”
At the end the person states that next year she will wear old clothes so she can have more fun.
I can relate to this because when ever I wear something new or nice I always am very cautious about getting it messed up. I think that this poem is first person.

The second poem I read was, “How to Eat A Poem”. It is about how to eat a poem. It says to just go ahead and bite right in. A poem has no core, stem, skin, seed, or pit. And you won’t have to use a napkin or utensils.

I think that “The New Suit” is the winner. I chose this poem because I liked the imagery. For Example, at the beginning it says, “A striped suit, A terrific tie, buttoned shoes and brown socks.” Also in that sentence it uses alliteration. Terrific tie and striped suit. I hope that this poem wins!

  7. The first poem,”The New Suit” is about a man who is going to a party and is wearing a nice suit, but then he thinks about it and he is worried he is going to spill food on it. This poem reminds me that when I go somewhere I will spill some kind of food on myself. It might be a costume, a nice shirt and pants or shorts, or it even could be a suit. I love this poem because it reminds me of the mess I make everywhere I go.

The second poem,”How to Eat a Poem” is about a person going through the steps of how to eat a poem. I think it would be hard for someone to eat a poem because you can’t really bite into a poem. Well at least I have never tried and probably never will. I think the author is using and apple to say it doesn’t have anything an apple has in it. This poem is a little funny because I have never met someone who would eat a poem.

I think the winner is “The New Suit,” because it really reminds me of what I do. My sister spills a lot of food to. My parents usually get mad at me because I spill so much food on expensive clothing. This poem shows a few ways of writer’s craft. The first way it shows writer’s craft is onomatopoeia in the sentence Don’t eat ice cream because it might drip. The second way this poem shows writer’s craft is alliteration it shows alliteration a few times. The first way it showed alliteration is striped suit. The second way it shows alliteration is a terrific tie. I love this poem and the other poem to but this one really stood out to me. I can’t wait to see this poem in the Elite Eight.

  8. The first poem”The New Suit” is about a guy that gets a suit that is nice to wear to a birthday party and he is told that he can not eat ice cream, cake, or chocolate bombs. Than when he gets to the birthday party people say “Who’s that stuffed breathless inside a tight suit. then next year he says that he will wear old clothes.

The next poem”How to Eat a Poem” is about some one say that to eat a poem you don’t be polite, pick it up with your fingers, and there is no stem, rind, pit, seed, or skin to throw away. So you eat the whole thing.

I think the winner is “The New Suit” because of the funny story how a guy doesn’t like suits. As for the writer's craft the author used alliteration in the lines “Striped suit, a terrific tie”. She also used personification in the line “chocolate bombs that might explode”. Those are the reasons I chose this poem.

  9. “How to Eat a Poem” is about how you don’t have to be polite to eat a poem you can dig in and eat as much as you want. You don’t even have to use a fork or spoon you just use you mouth. I really like this poem because of the imagery. For example, “Bite”. This poem was a great and fun to read.

“The New Suit” is about somebody's birthday and how next year they will be older and will grow out their old clothes and will need to get new ones. I love how this poem used alliteration. For example, it said striped suit. This was a great poem and will be hard to beat.

In my opinion I liked “How to Eat a Poem” better. In the poem it had repetition for example, or stem or rind or pit or seed or skin to throw away. I think this was the best poem out of all of the poems I have read. I think this poem deserves to win.

  10. going to a party in a new suit. This person really likes their suit also with a terrific tie, buttoned shoes, and brown socks. Some other people were telling the person about how the juice might dribble, the ice cream might drip, and how the chocolate bombs might explode. So the people were warning the person not to it them. Next year the person will wear his old clothes and be able to have ice cream, cake, and everything else. I think this poem was meant to entertain readers with a poem about a person with a new suit.

The second poem I read today was called “How to Eat a Poem.”This poem was about a person teaching us about how to eat a poem. The person made it sound like it was easy and okay to get messy. If you eat a poem there will be no stem, rind, pit, seed, or skin to throw away. The person said you don’t have to be polite, so just bite in. I think this fun poem was to entertain readers about how to eat a poem in a funny way.

I think the poem,”The New Suit,” should win because it has Rhyme scheme. The rhyme scheme is ABCD. The second reason I think this poem should win because it has alliteration were the poem says,”Stripped suit,” and,” terrific tie.” Lastly I chise this poem to win because it has imagery were the poem talks all about what his suit looks like and evrything else he’s wearing.

  11. “How to Eat a Poem” was the first poem I read it was about someone talking to the reader on how to eat a poem. I think “How to Eat a Poem” was written to entertain readers with silly poem on how the eat a poem. Lastly, while I was reading the poem I notice that it was written it second person.

“The New Suit” was the second poem I read. It was about someone who got a new suit for a party. When they got to the party they could barely eat anything because they didn’t want to spill. The next party they go to they will just wear old clothes, so they can eat and drink everything. While I was reading “The New Suit” I noticed that it was written in first person.

I don’t have a winner. I like “The New Suit” because I liked the alliterations it used. For example, it used striped suit and terrific tie. I liked “How to Eat a Poem” because it was a silly poem, and the rhyme scheme. The rhyme scheme for “How to Eat a Poem” was ABCB. I like both poems, and wonder which one will win.

  14. The first poem I read was “The new suit”. It is about how someone goes to a party wearing a suit but all the food and dessert are ice cream and other messy stuff. I liked this poem because it used imagery, for example when it described the suit I could imagine it in my head. I think that the author used this poem to entertain others. I liked this poem!

The second poem I read was “How to eat a poem” about how poem can be eaten, and how you don't have to pick off any parts. This poem used rhyme scheme the first few sentences rhyme scheme was ABBC.I think that the author used this poem to entertain others. I enjoyed reading this poem!

I chose “the new suit”as the winner because it used writer's craft like onomatopoeias like drip. It also used rhyme scheme. This poems rhyme scheme was, ABCD. I hope this poem wins!

  15. The first poem,”How to Eat a Poem,” is about what you have to do to read a poem. It uses imagery when it gives examples of what it’s like to eat a poem. It is also a good poem because it uses repetition at the end and it says “or… or… or…,” that’s why it is a good poem.
The second poem,” The New Suit,” is about an adult, and it was his birthday he got a new suit and everybody was telling him that juice would get all over it. He said that next year he will wear an old one and get it dirty. This poem uses imagery and rhymes the imagery is when it says things will get all over him. The rhymes are in the rhyme scheme here’s a set of rhymes party tie.
My favorite is,”The New Suit,” because it talks about some birthdays are good and some aren't good and shows how some one would have a good or bad birthday. It taught me a lesson that is to always be thankful.

  16. The New Suit is about a kid getting a new suit for his birthday. It's also about what foods you should be careful about spilling all over his suit. It's also about how he will eat different next year, and not be as careful

How To Eat A Poem is about being messy with your food. It's also about you don't need to through any food away. It's also about you don't need any silverware, you can just use your hands.

I like How To Eat A Poem better because I liked the topic. It used rhyme scheme, repetition.

¨Someone¨ is about how a kid hears a knock at the door. He opened the and saw nothing there except for a beatle tapping on the door.

I liked ¨Life Doesn't Frighten Me¨ because it really adds on emotions. It uses rhyme scheme, repetition.

  18. The first poem I read was called “The New Suit” by Nidia Sanabria De Romero Translated by Arnaldo D. Larrosa Moran with naomi Shihab Nye. “The New Suit” is about someone who bought a new suit for his birthday party. The catch that he has been instructed not to eat ice cream and get it on the suit and he has to drink juice slowly so that he doesn’t dribble it on his suit. He declares that at his next birthday party he will wear old clothes and enjoy his birthday. I think the author’s purpose in this poem was to entertain readers about a story were someone is grumpy and complaining about his new suit.
The second poem I read was “How To eat a Poem” by Eve Merriam. “How to Eat a Poem” is about a girl that is telling you to how to eat a poem. She describes the poem as ready and ripe now, whenever you are. She tells you that there is no need for a tablecloth or napkin. She also tells you that there is nothing to throw away in a poem. I think the author’s purpose is to inform readers about how to eat a poem.
For me the clear winner is “The New Suit”. The reason why I picked “The New Suit” is because it amused me and made me think of my brothers birthday party years ago. I liked how the author use imagery to paint a picture of a person standing in the corner of a room looking awkward and is sulking. I really liked “The New Suit”.

  19. “How to Eat a Poem” is about how you should eat a poem. First you don’t be polite you bite it with no fork, spoon, or knife. It is always ripe and there is no core, pit or seed and so on. I think this is meet to entertain a reader of a silly story about how to eat a poem.
“The New Suit” is about how it is his birthday but he can’t eat ice cream or drink juice because he can’t get stuff on his new suit. This is supposed to entertain a reader about how he can’t eat anything because he is wearing a suit.
I choose “The New Suit” because it reminds me of how my dad says that I have to take really good care of my suit. I like the alliteration. “Striped suit” or “terrific tie”. How about onomatopoeia. Drip and dribbles.

I’m missing out on ice cream, cake, and juice. Next year will be different. I liked how the writer used repetition. For example, when it said a terrific tie.
The second poem I read was called “How to Eat Poem” It is about how to eat a poem and how you don’t need a fork, spoon, or a knife. Just bite right in, you don’t have to be poite. The second poem I read was “How to Eat a Poem.” “How to Eat a Poem” is about someone telling you how to eat a poem while saying things like this “It has no skin or stem to throw away.”

I choose “The New Suit” as the winner because it has a good story to it. It has alliteration when it says “ice cream, cake and everything else.” It also has onamonapia when it says ”Drip”. I think this poem should win.

  27. I read “The New Suit” first. This poem is about a person who is wearing a new suit at their birthday party and they can’t eat or drink things that will get the suit messy. The person says they will not wear a suit next year and they will wear something that can get messy without worrying about it.

Next I read “How to Eat a Poem.” This poem is about how you can eat a poem carelessly because there is nothing that you need to throw away. For example, stem, rind, pit etcetera. Also it tells you that you don’t need a fork, knife, or spoon to eat it.

I am choosing “How to Eat a Poem” for my winner. It is a silly poem that tells you how to eat it. The poem included rhyme scheme. It was ABCB for the first four lines. It also includes imagery. The one of the five senses that it used was taste. This was big for this poem because it is about how to eat a poem. I hope “How to Eat a Poem” wins!

  28. The first poem I read was called, “The New Suit”. It is about a man who wears his best suit to a party. He doesn't want to get it dirty so he says that he has to take his time on eating food , so he will wear a different suit that he can get sloppy next year.

“How to Eat a Poem is about the author telling the reader how to eat a poem, and that they are delicious.

In my opinion, “The New Suit” is the winner. It has imagery when it says, “Striped suit and terrific tie.” It also uses alliteration when it says, “Striped Suit”.

  29. “How to Eat a Poem” is about a person telling you how to eat a poem. You do not need a knife, fork, spoon, plate, napkin, or tablecloth to eat it. You just eat it how they tell you to.

“The New Suit” is about a person going to a birthday party. He cannot spill anything on his suit. He said that next year would be different. He will wear old clothes and enjoy ice cream, cake and everything else.

I think the winner is “The New Suit.” There is no rhyme scheme but I thought it was still good. I liked how the author used alliteration. For example, “Striped suit.” Or, “Terrific tie.” It reminds me of the book Roxbury Park Dog Club. One of the girl’s mother tells her that she cannot get any dog hair on her clothes and she had to be VERY careful. If she got any on her clothes, she would be in big trouble because her mom does not want any dog hair in her neat, clean, nothing out of place house. I really liked “The New Suit” and I hope it wins!!

  30. ‘’The New Suit’’ is about a man who is wearing really nice clothes, and he is scared that he will get the clothes dirty so he does not eat anything. Then he says that he will not wear nice clothes. He will wear old clothes. This uses writers craft.
“How to Eat a Poem” is about how to eat a poem. It used alliteration when it said,”ready and ripe”. It used repetition when it said,’’or’’ five times. The rhyme scheme is ABCB. This poem is not very good in my opinion.
I like “The New Suit”. It used alliteration when it said,’’Striped suit” and “terrific tie”. It used onomatopoeia when it said,”Don’t eat ice cream because it might drip. This is not a great poem but it is better that “How to Eat a Poem”. I think it will win!

  31. “The New Suit” is about someone who is at a birthday party (probably a boy because boys wear suits more often) and he can’t eat any of the special foods that are being offered. I feel slightly bad for the kid because he can’t eat anything that is special too parties.A connection I have when I go out to eat my parents make me dress up if we are going to a fancy restaurant such as a country club. I am not allowed to eat messy food that I might spill. I like how the author painted a picture in my mind while I was reading the poem. I also liked how the author used repetition by repeating the word “ice cream.” I also liked how the author uses alliteration at the start. The author uses onomatopoeia when he/she says drip. That is what this poem is about.

The first poem, “How to Eat a Poem,” is about someone describing how if you really want to you can get lost in a poem. The author is also saying that it is easy and fun. The author says that you don’t even need silverware! Also, the author say that it is ready when you are. This poem also reminds me of a “How To” book. I think the author is trying to tell everyone that poems and books are as good as Mcdonalds or some other fast food restaurant. That is what the poem, “How to Eat a Poem,” is about.

I choose “How to Eat a Poem” as the clear winner in this hard fought matchup. I like how the author used personification because you can not really eat a poem unless you ate the paper with the writing. The author uses a metaphor by comparing the poem to a tasty meal. I like the clever use of the metaphor that the author used. A connection I have is when I am reading a really good book. I always feel like I am in the book and I can’t hear anyone talking. I wish that this poem had couplets and a rhyme scheme in it. That is why this poem is the clear winner!

  32. “How to Eat a Poem” is about the author telling the reader to eat poems and how to do it.

The second poem, “The New Suit” is about a man that bought a suit and wasn’t aloud to eat messy or drippy foods. Then at the end he said that he would wear old clothes to get messy in.

The winner should be “The New Suit” because it reminded me when I went to a nice party and got my good clothes dirty. Also it uses repetition when it says the words “ice cream and dribbles.”

  33. “The New Suit” is about someone who had a birthday party, but he wore his new suit. He really liked his suit a the beginning, but later on at the party he did not like it because he couldn’t eat ice cream, or drink juice fast, eat chocolate bombs. Then he says next year he will wear old clothes, and he will enjoy ice cream, cake, and everything else. I liked this story because I thought it was really funny, because he wore a nice looking suit to the party then he regretted it. I think this poem was written to entertain readers with a funny story about a boy with a new suit.

“How to Eat a Poem” is about how to eat a poem. You should not use manners. Just bite in without hesitating. Pick it up with your fingers, and lick the juice dribbling down your chin. It is ripe all the time, no matter when it is or where you are. No need for utensils, and no need for a tablecloth, for there is no core, stem, rind, pit, seed, skin, to throw away. I like this poem because I think it is really funny, and I like how they told you to have really bad manners. I think this poem was written to entertain readers with a funny story about how to eat a poem.

I pick “How to Eat a Poem” because I thought it was really funny, and it had a lot of writer’s craft.
For example, I like when the author put a couplet after “Don’t be polite.” Also, it had personification, because you can’t eat a poem. They used repetition when they repeated or alot. There was not alliteration, but I do not think it needed that or rhyme scheme. I think “How to Eat a Poem” is a really good poem, and I think it deserves to win.

  34. “The New Suit” is about a man who dressed up nicely, in a suit and tie, for his birthday. But, people made lots of recommendations like don’t eat the ice cream or chocolate bombs because they might mess up your clothes. He decides that next year he will wear old clothes to the party so that he can eat as much food as he wants! I think this poem was written to entertain the reader with a poem about a man who dresses nicely to his birthday party and regrets it.

The second poem, “How to Eat a Poem,” is about that you shouldn’t be polite and instead just bite into a poem. You don’t need a fork, knife, spoon, plate, napkin, or tablecloth because there is no core, stem, rind, pit, seed, or skin that you should throw away. I think this poem was written to entertain the reader with a poem that is silly about how you can eat a poem.

I choose “The New Suit” because it reminds me of a book where one of the characters dressed up nicely for a party and regretted it. I like how the author used alliteration when he said “Striped Suit” and “a terrific tie.” He also used onomatopoeia. For example, the poem says “drip.” The author used imagery when he said “Striped suit, a terrific tie, buttoned shoes and brown socks.” This gives me a sense of sight. “The New Suit” is a great poem and I hope it will win.

  35. “The New Suit” is about a man who went to a party in a new fancy suit. When he was there the people said to not eat any of the treats and food just because it could ruin his suit. Those suggestions drove him crazy because he wanted to eat and have fun. At the end of the book he said that we will wear casual clothes next year so he can enjoy the party. I think he learned that it doesn’t matter what you wear if you’re having fun. I noticed that the poem was in first person.

“How to Eat a Poem” is about somebody telling us how to eat a poem. It is sort of silly because poems are on paper and computers, and those items aren’t edible. I think the author wrote this to entertain readers with a silly poem about how to eat a poem. The poem is second person because it included us in the poem.

I pick “The New Suit” as the winner because it used alliteration. For example, one line was, “a terrific tie.” another reason why is because it used imagery. For example, when it explained what the suit looked like I imagined it in my head. My third reason is because it used rhyme scheme. For example, the first few lines rhyme scheme was ABAC. my final reason is because it used idioms. For example, one line was, “Who’s that stuffed breathless inside a tight suit?” I hope it wins!
