Poetry Madness: Game 7

Image result for some one poem walterImage result for life doesn't frighten me by maya angelou

Read Game 7 poems. Answer each question below. Remember to explain WHY you chose the winner based on poet's craft (rhyme, line breaks, punctuation, simile/metaphor, word choice, repetition) AND your personal connection to the meaning. Don't forget to write with M.I.N.T.S.!

Your post needs to include the following:
1. What is the meaning of the first poem? (Summarize in one sentence)

2. What is the meaning of the second poem? (Summarize in one sentence)

3. Based on the criteria, which poem did you choose and WHY?

Here is an example of a proficient blog post:

“Do you carrot all for me?” is about someone that is asking someone else if they care for them. They replace words with vegetables and fruits. It’s a funny poem. I like the word play the poet used. This is a great poem.

The second poem I read was “The Castle in the Fire.” It is about a pretty lady and a knight. The knight fights the dragon. It was a brilliant fight. Then, the castle, knight, and dragons were out of sight. When the smoke lifted, they saw to their delight. The pretty lady and the knight.

I choose “Do you carrot all for me?” because of the word play, imagery, and the metaphors. For example, it shows word play when it replaces words with vegetables and fruits. It says, “Do you carrot all for me?” It should say, “Do you care at all for me?” It shows imagery because you can imagine what’s happening. You can tell that it’s about a man/woman writing a love letter. It uses metaphors because it replaces each word with a fruit/vegetable. This is a really funny poem, and I think this should win!

  1. “Some One” is about a person who hears a knock at the door. They open the door but nobody is at the door. It says, “I looked left and right, but nought was a-stirring In the still dark night; Only the busy beetle tapping in the wall.” This poem uses repetition because it says, “Only” three times in a row. I can make a connection about this. Sometimes people go up to houses, ring the doorbell, and then go hide.

“Life Doesn't Frighten Me” is about a person telling the reader that he/she is not scared of anything. It even says, “Panthers in the park, strangers in the dark, No, they don't frighten me at all”. Some writers craft is rhyme scheme. The rhyme scheme is AAAB.

I choose “Life Doesn't Frighten Me” because I like the rhyme scheme. The author also uses repetition. The poem says, “Life Doesn't Frighten Me At All” lots of times. I can make a connection to this story. Sometimes I get scared of things, but sometimes I don't.

  6. “ Some One “ is about someone knocking at the door, but when they open the door, there is no one.

“ Life Doesn’t Frighten Me “ is about someone saying life doesn't frighten them no matter what.

The winner should be “ Some One” because it is like a mystery and I like mystery’s. It also has imagery because how they described I can see it, like “I looked left then right”. There is also rhyme scheme, the first paragraph is A B A. That’s why I hope it wins!

  7. The first poen I read was, “Some One.” This poem is about how some one came knocking at the door and then they left. The only thing they only saw a beetle and an owl. At the end it says they don’t know who was knocking at the door.

The second poem I read was, “Life Doesn’t Frighten Me.” It is about how life doesn’t frighten them even when the toughest things come to them. For example, “Don’t show me frogs and snakes And listen for my scream.”

I think the winner is, “Life Doesn’t Frighten Me.” I want this poem to win because I like how this person is very, though and that nothing in life frightens them. Some writers craft that was in this story was Rhyme scheme, alliteration, and repitition. It uses alliteration when it says “Lions on the loose.” The rhyme scheme is AAAB. Repetition is used whein it says, “Life doesn’t frighten me at all.”

  8. The first poem I read was “Some One." It was about someone who came knocking on the character's door, but the character in the poem was not sure if really happened.

The second poem I read was,”Life Doesn’t Frighten Me” it is about someone talking about everything people might not like or is scary, and say that is does not frighten the character.

I choose “Life Doesn't Frighten Me” as the winner because the first four lines of the rhyme scheme are A,A,A,B, It also has onomatopoeia by saying “I go boo.” I also found repetition when It repeated “Life doesn't frighten me.” I like how the author makes the poem very descriptive. I think this poem should win.

  9. “Life Doesn’t Frighten Me’’ is about a girl who is not scared of things. The girl has a lot of confidence. The rhyme scheme is AABB. It used alliteration when it said,’Panthers in the park’’ and ‘’Bad dogs barking’’. It used repetition when it said ‘’Life doesn’t frighten me at all’’. I think the moral of the story is not to care what other people think, and be yourself. This was a good poem.
The second poem,’’Some One,’’ is about a person who thinks someone is knocking on there door, and they go to the door but really there is no one there. This poem used a lot of writers craft.
I like ’’Some One’’ better. It was funny. It used repetition when in repeated,’’Someone came knocking’’and ‘’Only’’. It used alliteration when it said,’’Tap-tapping’’. It also used onamonapia when it said,’’ The screech-owls call’’. The rhyme scheme is ABAB. I think the author's purpose was to entertain. I hope this will win!

  11. The first poem I read was “Someone.” I is about a gnome who live in the forest, and someone came knocking on. He did not know who it was so he went back to bed.

The second poem I read was “Life Doesn’t Frighten Me.” This poem is about a kid who does not get scared. He is brave I think death wont frighten him.

The poem I like the most was “Life Doesn’t Frighten Me.” I like this poem I can relate to this poem. My dad thinks is not afraid of anything. This poem uses repetition it says at all. The first 5 lines of rhyme scheme is AAABC.

  12. “Some One” is about a someone who heard a another person knocking on their small door. But, when he went to open it and looked out he only heard a beetle tapping on the wall, an owl’s call, and a cricket whistling. So, he does not know at all who knocked on his door that night. I think that the author made this poem to say that even if there is something scary, you shouldn’t be frightened.

The second poem, “Life Doesn’t Frighten Me,” is about a girl who isn’t afraid of shadow, noises, big animals, strangers, or being new somewhere. Instead she makes fun and smiles. She doesn’t cry or scream because she is not afraid. The girl has a magic charm that she keeps up her sleeve, and she can walk on the ocean floor without having to breathe. I think that the author made this poem to say that you shouldn’t be afraid of life, even though it is sometimes frightening.

I choose “Life Doesn’t Frighten Me” because I think it has a really good meaning. The author used rhyme scheme in this poem. For example, the first four lines are AAAB. She also used alliteration when she said “Bad dogs barking loud” and “Panthers in the park.” It reminds me of a book I read where the main character wasn’t afraid of big dogs, frogs, snakes, strangers, or ghosts. I also think the author used repetition when she repeated “frighten me at all.” Also, there was onomatopoeia when she said “I go boo” and “Bad dogs barking loud.” “Life Doesn’t Frighten Me” is a great poem and I think it should win.

  13. “Some One” is about a kid who heard knocking outside his door. He came out to see who was knocking, but the only thing he saw was a beetle tapping in the wall. The only thing he heard outside was the owl’s call and the sound of a cricket as the dewdrops fall. So the kid did not know who was knocking at the end, but I think that the kid thinks that the animals made the sounds. I noticed that it was first person because it used pronouns like my and we.

“Life Doesn’t Frighten Me” is about a person who is never frightened. For example, it says that he is not afraid of lions on the loose! That is really hard to not be scared because they could be somewhere in your backyard or neighborhood. I think that he is really brave. I noticed that it was first person.

I pick “Life Doesn’t Frighten Me” as the winner because it used an idiom. For example, it said in the poem, “I’ve got a magic charm up my sleeve. Another reason is because it used rhyme scheme. For example, the first few lines rhyme scheme is AAABBA. My third reason is because it used repetition. For example, it said frighten a lot in the poem. My fourth reason is because it used alliteration. For example, one line was, “Bad dogs barking loud.” my final reason is because it used imagery. For example, I could imagine dragons breathing fire. I hope this poem wins!

  14. The first poem I read was “Life Doesn’t Frighten Me.” It is about a person telling us that life doesn’t frighten him or her. Even dragons breathing flame. The person said that she was brave and nothing frightens her.

The second poem I read was “Some One.” It is about a girl that thought someone knocked on her wee small door. But she never found out who did it. She opened the door and looked left and right. But she never found out who did it.

I chose “Life Doesn’t Frighten Me” as the winner. I thought it was very detailed. And I liked how the person who was telling the story made sure to tell everyone that life doesn’t frighten her. The rhyme scheme is AAAB. It reminds me of someone who is trying to prove something. “Panthers in the park” is the alliteration. I hope “Life Doesn’t Frighten Me” wins!!!

  15. The first poem I read was “Life Doesn’t Frighten Me” I think it is about how a guy is not scared of anything and is saying it to himself. He is saying that if people try to scare him he won’t be scared. This reminds me of when I try to watch a scary movie and I act like I’m not scared but I really am.I liked how it had good rhyme scheme. For example, the rhyme scheme is AABBA.
The second poem I read was “Some One’’ I think it is about a person that is confused on how birds and beetles knock on the door but he thinks someone is knocking but no one is. One of the writer’s craft I saw was onomatopoeia. For example, so I know not who came knocking, at all, at all, at all. Another writer’s craft I saw was it had good rhyme scheme. For example, the rhyme scheme is ABABCC.
I think the winner is “Life Doesn’t Frighten Me” because it had good rhyme scheme and it had onomatopoeia. For example, so I know not who came knocking, at all, at all, at all. The rhyme scheme is ABABCC.

  16. The first poem, “Some One” is about someone Knocking on a door and the person inside comes to look, but they see nothing. The person hears beatles tapping on the wall and owls screeching their song.

“Life Doesn’t Frighten Me” is about all the author telling the reader that he or she are not afraid of anything in life.

I choose “Some One” because it has writer's craft. It shoes repetition by saying only multiple times. Also it uses imagery by saying that the beatles are tapping in the wall and owls screeching their calls. It reminds me of when someone dingdong ditched me. That is why “Some One” should be the winner.

  17. I read “Life Doesn’t Frighten Me.” It’s about someone who is not afraid of anything. She/he isn’t scared of shadows on the wall, noises down the hall, or even big ghosts in a cloud. They are not scared at whatever life throws at them. They are not just afraid of monsters under their bed. Life doesn’t frighten them at all. This is a great poem!

The second poem I read was “Some One.” It’s about someone who knocked on the door, but when they opened their wee, small door, no one was there. Then, they listened, opened the door, and looked left and right, but there was not any noise. The only noise was a busy beetle, an owls call, a cricket whistling, and dew drops fall, so they do not know who knocked on their door.

I choose “Life Doesn’t Frighten Me” because of the rhyme scheme, imagery, alliteration, and repetition. The rhyme scheme first four lines are AAAB. It shows imagery when it says noises down the hall because hearing is in your five senses, and the five senses are imagery. It shows alliteration when it says, “Bad Dogs Barking.” It also shows alliteration when it says “Mean Old Mother Goose.” It shows repetition when it says “Life doesn’t frighten me at all.” This poem is a funny, meaningful poem, and I think it should win.

  18. “Life Doesn't Frighten Me” is about a girl who is not scared of anything, because she has a charm up her sleeve that protects her. When they say I can walk on the ocean floor that reminds me of a verse that I say every night, and every morning. Philippians 4:13 “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” This poem really speaks to me, because you should not be scared because if you are you can’t live life to the very fullest. I think this poem was written to teach to not be scared just live life to the fullest.

“Some One” is a about someone who has another person knocking at their door, but when he opens the door no one is there. All he hears is the beetle tapping on the wall, the screech owls call, the cricket whistling. And he does not know who came knocking. He doesn't have the slightest idea. I like this poem because when he opens the door I like when they really describe what he hears, it is not onomatopoeia but it describes what he hears. I think this poem was written to entertain readers with a mysterious story about someone getting pranked.

I pick “Life Doesn’t Frighten Me” because I think it has a really good message, and I really like the writer’s craft like the rhyme scheme for the first few lines ( we would be here all day if I said the whole thing) AAABBA but I loved the rhyme scheme for the whole thing. Also, repetition played a big role in me choosing because I liked how they said “Life doesn't frighten me.” A lot.
Like I said in my first paragraph it reminds me of Philippians 4:13. I think “Life Doesn't Frighten Me” is a really well written poem, and I think it should win.

  19. “Life Doesn’t Frighten Me” is about a girl who is not afraid of anything. Everyday she faces new challenges, but she always overcomes the challenges. This poem shows you how this girl isn’t afraid of anything. I think that on the second page the girl says that she is not afraid of death, and that she can do anything. She can even walk the ocean floor without breathing once. I think of how my family and friends comfort me when I am in hard times. I think that the girl has had nobody to comfort her. I think she can be an example to everyone of how to not be afraid. This poem is a very good poem.

“Some One” is about someone who gets their door knocked on, but the person doesn’t know who did it. He talks about how he will never know who was the knocker. I think this poem can be a metaphor about how to live out your life. For example, the character didn’t find out who knocked, but he can keep going on with his life even though the mysterious knocker was still a mystery. I think the author might have been saying that some things are best left as a mystery. I liked how the rhyme scheme to the poem was ABACDEFEGHIHJHAH. I like how the author also uses onomatopoeia. That is what this poem is about.

I choose “Life Doesn’t Frighten Me” is clearly the winner. I like how the rhyme scheme starts out as AAABB. I like how the author uses repetition when he repeats “Life doesn’t frighten me” over and over. I think that we can all learn something meaningful from this poem. This poem makes me think of how my family and friends comfort me when I am in hard times. I wish that the other people showed sympathy to the girl. The girl is someone who has one of the hardest lives, but she fights through it. I think this should show that we should try to have as much courage as this girl has. This poem is clearly the winner.

  21. The first poem I read was “Life Doesn’t frighten Me”. It is about a girl saying that life doesn’t frighten her. She says that very scary things find their way to her, but she keeps pushing, laughing, smiling, and having a good time, so they get destroyed and leave. I found that this poem contains a great modern life message as well. It is that no matter what happens, we will all come back in the kingdom of God, so we shouldn’t be scared because the Holy Spirit will protect us forever and ever. I infer that the girl who isn’t scared of life is a Christian.

The second poem, “Some One,” is about a man who got a knock at his small door, but there was no one there but a beetle, an owl, a cricket, and dewdrops. He was sure that he got a knock though, but there was nothing stirring besides the four things I just listed. Only the dark vortex of night. I infer that it is close to Halloween, and he just got Ding-Dong-Ditched.

In my opinion, “Life Doesn’t Frighten Me” should win because of the masterpiece of a message. It has repetition as well, like the phrase,”Life doesn’t frighten me at all.” It also used personification. For example, geese don’t have names. It lastly used imagery because you get a picture in your mind when it says “dragons breathing flame on my counterpane.” “Life Doesn’t Frighten Me” is an extraordinary poem and I hope it wins!

“Some One”s about someone who was knocking on the door. And when the person opened the door nobody was there.

I think the winner is,”Life Doesn’t Frighten Me.”Because I think it has a better meaning in my opinion. It’s saying that life doesn’t frighten the person. The writer’s craft is rhyme scheme of AAABBACCADDAE. “Life Doesn’t Frighten Me” is a great poem and I hope it is the winner!!

  23. The first poem,”Someone” is about a person in her room and keeps hearing sounds but there is nothing there and nothing hiding.

The second poem,”Life doesn’t Frighten me at all” is about a girl who is not scared of anything no matter what it is.

I think the winner is,”Life Doesn’t Frighten me at All” because it shows even if there is something terrible happening it doesn’t frighten me because I don’t live my life scared. The poem shows writers craft too. The first way it shown writer's craft is repetition for example shadows on the wall noises down the hall. The second way it shows writer’s craft is rhyme scheme for example AAABBA.

The second poem I read was “SomeOne.” It is about a person and how someone came knocking on there dore.

I think the winner is “Someone.” because I like how it had so much detail. Some of the onomato is screech, dewdrops, and stirring

  26. The first poem,Life doesn’t Frighten me at all” is about someone talking things that possibly could frighten him. If he does get frightened it’s only in his dreams.

The second poem, “SomeOne” is about a person who heard knocking on the door. When the lady opened the door no one was there. Accept a beetle tapping on the door.

I think the winner should be, “Life doesn’t Frighten me at all” because it’s true. I also like the poem because of the repetition. For example, life doesn’t frighten me at all. Another reason I like this poem is because of the rhyme scheme. For example (AAAB). I really enjoyed this poem. I hope it wins.

The second poem that I read was “Some One” and it is about someone knocking at a door then they realize there is no one there

I think the winner is,”Life Doesn’t Frighten Me" because it has a better meaning of the poem and the writer's craft is rhyme scheme is AAABBACCADDAE

  28. The first poem, “Life Doesn't Frighten Me at All,” is about someone who is not scared of anything in life and has a lot of courage.

The second poem,”Someone,” is about a person who hears a knock on their door, but nobody was at the door when he or she opened the door.

“Life Doesn't Frighten Me” is the winner in my opinion because it has repetition. For example, it says “Life doesn't frighten me at all. Mean old Mother Goose. Lions on the loose. They don’t frighten me at all.” Another reason why is because I like the rhyme scheme at the start which is AAABBA. I think “Life Doesn't Frighten Me” is the winner in my opinion.

  29. “Some One” is about someone who came knocking on somebody's door at night. The owner of the house opened the door and there was no one there. The only thing was the noises. of the forest at night and the owl in the tree nearby. At the end it states that they will not know who had knocked on his door. I think that no one was knocking on the person's door but it was just the sound of the forest and animals at night making a noise that sounds like knocking.I think that this poem was first person.

“Life Doesn't Frighten Me” is about someone saying how life does not frighten them. They don’t get scared of things like snakes, shadows, lions, frogs and other things that someone else might have been afraid of. They repeat Life Doesn't Frighten Me every time the poet says something they are not afraid of. I think that this poem is first person.

I think that the winner is, “Some One”. I think that this poem won because I like the rhyme scheme. Some of it was ABABCDEC. Another reason is because of the repetition. For example, It says Someone came knocking twice. Also, the poet included alliteration. For example the poem said, “Only the busy Beetle” and “At all, at all, at all.” I think that, “Some One” should win!

  30. The poem “Some One” is about a guy that hears a knock on his door then he rushes down to see who it is. When he gets to his door there is no one there. All he hears is an owl, a beetle, and dew drops falling.

The poem “Life Doesn’t Frighten Me” is about a boy that is not afraid of anything in his life, and he has a good luck charm up his sleeve.

I think the winner is “Some One”. this was the closest match up yet. The reason I chose “Some One” is because of the rime scheme which was ABAB, and the onamonapia. My favorite line is “ So I know not who came a knocking at all at all at all”.

  31. “Some One” is about how somebody who hears a knock on the door, opened the door, but did not see anything. I like this poem because it was written with alliteration when it said, “Tap tapping in the wall.” I really like this poem.

“Life Doesn’t Frighten Me” is about no matter how many frightening things there are don’t be afraid of them. In this poem they used rhyme scheme. For example, AAABB was in the first few lines. This was a really good poem and will be hard to beat.

In my opinion “Life Doesn’t Frighten Me” was the best poem. It used repetition because it repetes “LIfe Doesn’t Frighten Me at all.” It also uses onamonapia, when it said boo, shoo, cry,and fly. This poem is long, but I think it was worth reading. This poem deserves to win.

  35. “Some One” is about someone who heard a knock at the door. There was no one there. I knew it was night time because “There owls screeching and crickets were whistling.” This poem reminds me of when we heard the door knock at night, and no one was there.

“Life Doesn’t Frighten Me” is about all the scary things in life that can happen. If she gets scared it is in her dreams. You can learn a valuble lession if your scared you could miss out on things. God is with you and you don’t need to be afraid of things. I used to be afraid of plenty of things.

I think “Life Doesn’t Frighten Me” is the winner. For example, I liked how it uses rhyme schemeAAABB. It also uses metaphors “big ghost in a cloud.” It uses reptutation”Life doesn’t frighten me at all.” I used to be afraid of a lot of things when I was little.

  37. The first poem I read,” Some One,” was about someone knocking on the the other person’s door. The person looked left and right, but nobody was there. It was late in the dark night and all the person could hear was the busy beetle tapping in the wall, the screech of the owl in the forest, and the whistle of a cricket. The person still couldn’t see or find the person who was in the dark night. I also saw that the poet used onomatopoeia when the poem said that the beetle goes tap-tapping in the wall. The rhyme scheme to this poem is ABACDEFEGHIHJHAH. Lastly, I saw how the reader used alliteration when the poem said’, Tap-tapping in the wall.” This poem reminded me about someone ding-dong-ditching another person. I think this poem was to entertain people about someone knocking on another person’s door, but the person couldn’t see or find that person who did it.

The second poem I read was called ” Life Doesn’t Frighten Me.” This poem is about a girl that saying that she is not frightened of anything, but if she is frightened of something it is probably in her dreams. This can teach a lesson that you can trust in God and not be frightened about what he has planned out your life to be like. The poem has rhyme scheme which is AAAB. This poem also has a good amount of alliteration it. Lastly, this poem is first poem view because it says “I” in most of the lines.

I chose the poem,” Some One, “ because it has onomatopoeia where the poem says,”Tap-tapping.” Second, I chose this poem because it has repetition when it said”, Some one and only the,” a few times. Lastly, I chose this poem because this was a fun poem to read. This poem was fun because when you read it sometimes it can be very fun.

  38. The first poem I read was “Life doesn't frighten me” by Maya Angelou. It is about how nothing can make her scream or panic. One of the writer's craft I noticed was repetition, for example the author kept repeating the word “Life doesn't frighten me at all”. I enjoyed reading this poem.

The second poem I read was “Some One”. By Walter De La Mare. This poem was about a maiden who hears someone knocking at her door, but when she goes to answer nobody's there. One piece of writer's craft I saw was onomatopoeias like screech and tapping. I enjoyed reading this poem.

I think that the winner should be “Some One”. because it uses writer’s craft like repetition when it repeated the word sure. This poem also used rhyme scheme, for example in the first few sentences the rhyme scheme was ABAB. I hope this poem wins!

  39. The first poem I read is called “Life Doesn’t Frighten Me” by Maya Angelou. “Life Doesn’t Frighten Me” is about someone that says that nothing frightens them at all. The character gives examples of what she is not afraid of such as in the first three lines the she says “Shadows on the wall noises in the hall life doesn’t frighten me at all”. I think the author was trying to entertain readers about a girl who is not afraid of anything.
The second poem I read is called “Someone” by Walter De La Mare. “Some One” is about a person who one night hears someone knock on their door, but when they look outside no one is there. The author states that the only sound is the busy beetle in the wall, the screech owls, and some crickets. I think the author's purpose was to entertain readers about a mysterious person knocking on the character’s door.
The winner is “Life Doesn’t Frighten Me” because it is entertaining and interesting to see all the different ideas the character says she isn't afraid of. I also like the rhyme scheme. The rhyme scheme of the first eight lines is AAAB BACC. One piece of writer's craft is imagery because I think the author did a good job painting a dragon on a bed spread in my mind. Another piece of writer's craft is cupits. An example for cupits is on line fifteen and sixteen “I make fun way they run” I really enjoyed reading “Life Doesn’t Frighten Me” by Maya Angelou.

  40. “Life Doesn’t Frighten Me” is about stuff like bad dogs barking loud and dragons that breathe fire. The stuff that frightens most people but not her because she is tough. Life doesn't frighten her.
“Some One” is about someone came knocking at his small door. He opened the door and nobody was there. He looked up and down but nobody was there.
I choose “Life Doesn’t Frighten Me” because I like the rhyme scheme.AAABBACC and that is only a little. There are three couplets in the first eight lines. “Shadows on the wall and noises down the hall” is the first. “Bad dogs barking loud and big ghosts in a cloud”. The last goes “Mean old mother goose and lions on the loose.
