Poetry Madness: Elite 8, Game 3

Now that you have read through all of the poems and chosen a winner to advance to the Elite 8, the pressure has mounted. Read the winners of Game 5 and Game 7.

Choose your winner based on the following criteria:
  • Which poem's meaning is more important to you?
  • What personal connection can you make?
  • Which poet's craft do you enjoy more? Be sure to give examples.
    • Poet's craft can include: repetition, imagery, personification, rhyme, alliteration, couplets, onomatopoeia, simile/metaphor, quatrain, etc

Make sure your answer is detailed and explains the three bullet points.

Here is an example of an advanced/proficient post:

“Mother to Son” has a more important meaning to me because it is talking about a woman who was probably a slave telling her boy that life isn't going to be easy but to not give up.

My connection is with the poem “Casey at the Bat.” I have been on a softball team before and struck out when my team really needed a hit.  I can imagine how the fans and the player feel when the game is over, and they do not win.

I like “Mother to Son's” writer’s craft more because it rhymes better and the way it is written sounds like the mother is from the South .For example, she says, "I'se been a-climbin' on" and "turnin' corners." I also enjoyed that the poem is a metaphor comparing life to a flight of stairs that is hard to climb.  The poet's mother encourages him to never give up but keep trying even though life is hard. “Mother to Son” should win this game.

  3. I think “Life Doesn’t Frighten Me” has a better meaning because it is about being brave, fearless, and not being afraid of life if something bad happens.

I make a connection with “Choosing Shoes” because I have a hard time picking out shoes also. I can never decide which ones I should get.

I think “Choosing Shoes” should win. It has repetition, alliteration, and rhyme scheme. For example, “New shoes, new shoes” is repetition. Or just “shoes.” The alliteration is, “Pretty pointy-toe shoes” or, “Dandy-dance-by-night shoes.” And I think it is more entertaining. I hope “Choosing Shoes” wins!!!!!

  4. I think “Choosing Shoes” should win because it is about how when you are about to go shoe shopping, don’t get your hopes up. At the store you go to you might get flat shoes, longs shoes, floppy shoes, and you might even get worn out shoes.

The second reason I picked “Choosing Shoes” is because I can make a connection. One time when I was about to go shoe shopping I was thinking about all of the glorious shoes I could get. But when I got there they didn’t have any shoes that were my fit. I was so mad and disappointed.

The last reason I chose “Choosing shoes” was because it had a lot of writer’s craft. One of them was it had rhyme scheme and a lot of alliteration. The rhyme scheme is AAAB. Some of the alliteration was pretty pointy-toe shoes and dandy-dance-by-night shoes.
    I hope Choosing Shoes wins!

  5. The most meaningful poem I read was “Life Doesn't Frighten Me” because it is meaningful and serious. It also has a good meaning.

I can make a connection with “Choosing Shoes” because when I was little I had so many shoes. On some days I would be so caught up in myself I would need the best shoes. It always took me forever to choose.

I choose “Choosing Shoes” because it is a fun poem. It’s rhyme scheme A,A,A,B, and it has alliteration by saying “Pretty Pointy.” I like how the author made the shoes so descriptive. I think “Choosing Shoes” is the clear winner.

  6. I think “Life Doesn’t Frighten Me” has a deeper meaning to me because it is about how life doesn’t frighten this person no matter what happens. For example, “Dragons breathing flame On my counterpane That doesn’t frighten me at all.”

I can make a connection with “Choosing Shoes” when I am shoe shopping. I might want some very bright and cool looking shoes, but I am supposed to get some shoes that can get dirty but you can’t see the dirt very well. So that makes me pick out some gray, black, brown, or other dark color.

I like “Life Doesn’t Frighten Me’s” writers craft better because it used couplets almost all the time. Also, it used repetition when it says “Life doesn’t frighten me at all.” Then it used alliteration when it says “lions on the loose.” I hope “Life Doesn’t Frighten Me” wins this game!

  7. “Choosing Shoes” is about a person who is in a shoe store. They talk about all kinds of different shoes that they want to try on.

“Life Doesn't Frighten Me” is about a person who is not scared by anything. He says “Panthers in the park, Strangers in the dark, No they don't frighten me at all.

In my opinion, “Life Doesn’t Frighten Me” should be the winner. The author uses rhyme scheme. The rhyme scheme is AAAB. The author also uses repetition. She uses repetition when it says life doesn’t frighten me.

  8. “Choosing Shoes” is more important to me. It was very funny. And used writer's craft. I hope that this poem moves on.
A connection I made with,”Choosing Shoes” is that it always takes me forever to pick out shoes at the shoe store.
“Choosing Shoes” Has more writers craft. The rhyme scheme is AABB. It used repetition when it repeated “New shoes”. It used alliteration when it said,”Dandy-dance-by-night shoes”.I like ,”Choosing Shoes” better. I hope it wins!

  9. I think “Life Doesn’t Frighten Me” has the deeper meaning because it is saying that you shouldn’t be afraid of life, even if sometimes it is scary.

I can make a connection to “Choosing Shoes” because I can’t decide a lot of times which shoes to pick.

I think “Life Doesn’t Frighten Me” should win because it has couplets like “Bad dogs barking loud Big ghosts in a cloud.” Also, it has repetition when the author repeats several times “doesn’t frighten me.” My third reason is because the author uses rhyme scheme. The first four lines are AAAB. Finally, there is alliteration when it says “Mean old Mother Goose” and “Lions on the loose.” “Life Doesn’t Frighten Me” is a great poem and it should win.

  10. I think “Life Doesn't Frighten Me” is more meaningful because it’s saying life never frighten them.

The connection I have with is “Choosing Shoes” because I have to choose shoes too.

The winner should be “Choosing Shoes” because it reminds me of a Doctor Suess book. It also has rhyme scheme, the first paragraph is A A A B.

  11. “Roger the Dog” is about a lazy dog. Who saves all his energy to clean his dinner dish. He passes out on walks, and sleeps all day.

“Who Has Seen The Wind” is about a someone who has not seen the wind, but even though the trees are moving. There is no wind.

I like “Roger the Dog.” This poem reminds me of my dog sleeping all day. The rhyme scheme is AA BB CC DD ect.

  12. I think “Choosing Shoes” has the better meaning because it is about a colored person wanting to buy all different types of shoes such as, strappy, cappy low shoes fat shoes flat shoes but can’t.

A connection I have is with "Choosing Shoes" is when I go to the shoe store and try to figure out which type of shoes I should buy.

I think "Choosing Shoes" should win because it has multiple couplets and rhyme scheme. It has repetition by saying shoes over and over again. That is why "Choosing Shoes" should win!!!

  13. I think “Life Doesn’t Frighten Me” has a more important meaning to me because it is about someone who says they are not scared about anything that will happen in life. This is a great poem!

I can make a connection with “Choosing Shoes” because I know what it’s like choosing new shoes. I always see really cool ones, and then I see other shoes. It is very hard to choose shoes because they can be amazing! This poem is AWESOME!

I choose “Choosing Shoes” because it uses rhyme scheme, repetition, and alliteration. The rhyme scheme for the first stanza is AAAB. It has repetition when it says “New shoes, new shoes.” It has alliteration when it says “Pretty pointy-toe shoes” and when it says “Dandy-dance-by-night shoes.” This is a great poem, and I think it should win!

  14. “Life Doesn’t Frighten Me,” has a bigger meaning to me. I love how the girl is full of courage. She fights through all the challenges of life to try to get a good life. I think that the girl should be a living example of courage. I think that she has one of the best attitudes in the world by saying that she can take any challenge. I think the author was trying to show us how we should live out our lives. That is what the poem, “Life Doesn’t Frighten Me,” means to me. “Choosing Shoes” doesn’t really have that much meaning me.

I have two connections one to each of the poems. My first connection is to “Choosing Shoes.” I always have had a hard time choosing shoes at a store. I always look for the shoes that look cool. I will always look for the brands that I like next. I then do a process of elimination for which shoes I’ll get. That is my connection to the poem “Choosing Shoes.” My connection with, “Life Doesn’t Frighten Me,” is that my parents always help me through the rough times. They comfort me and help me lose my fears. Those are my connections to these amazing poems.

I choose, “Life Doesn’t Frighten Me,” as the winner in this Elite Eight matchup. I love how the author uses an AAABB rhyme scheme at the start. The author also uses repetition throughout the poem by repeating the words “Life doesn’t frighten me.” I also like how the author paints a picture in my mind. The author also uses an idiom at the end. I wish that the author had used onomatopoeia. I wish that the author had used some personification and alliteration in this poem. I choose, “Life Doesn’t Frighten Me,” as the winner for all of these reasons.

  15. “Life Doesn’t Frighten Me” has a deeper meaning to me because it teaches a valuable life lesson: No matter what, God will protect you, so you shouldn’t be scared of anything because you will always come back to Heaven to live eternal life.

I made a connection with “Choosing Shoes” because my sister takes a solid forty-five minutes to an hour to choose a pair of shoes, and of course we go right before lunch, so I’m stuck savoring half of a peanut butter cracker due to her lack of care for my stomach.

I think “Life Doesn’t Frighten Me” showed better writer’s craft. For example, it used couplets when it said,”Panthers in the park, strangers in the dark.” It also used repetition when it said the words, “Life doesn’t frighten me at all.” Finally, it used personification and imagery because geese don’t have names and it used words like “dark.” “Life Doesn’t Frighten Me” is an awesome poem and it should win!

  17. “Life Doesn’t Frighten me” has a more important meaning to me because it is about a kid who is very brave. This is a important lesson to me because I know should never be afraid because God is on my side because he will help me in tough times by being there for me because he’s with me and you every day. My final reason why is because that “Choosing Shoes” was not meant to have a lesson, but it is good for helping readers choosing shoes, and to be a entertaining poem. I think “Life Doesn’t frighten me” has a good lesson.

I have a connection with “Choosing Shoes” because twice a year I go to the shoe store to get new shoes. I always take a while because I have to find the shoes I like in my size. When I was little I would never want to go to get shoes because it took to long. I usually get Nike air max shoes. I have a good connection with this poem.

I like “Life Doesn’t Frighten Me’s” writers craft more because it used couplets. For example, one of the many couplets is “Shadows on the wall Noises down the hall.” another reason why is because I liked the rhyme scheme. For example, the first couple lines’ rhyme scheme is AAABBACC. My third reason is because it used an idiom. For example, the idiom was “ I’ve got a magic charm That I keep up my sleeve.” another reason why is because it used repetition. For example, it said “frighten me at all” a lot in the poem. My fifth reason why is because it used alliteration. For example, one line was “Bad dogs barking loud.” My final reason is because it used imagery. For example, I can imagine bad dogs barking loud. This poem is so good, I think it should win it all,

  18. I think the winner is “Choosing Shoes” because I have a lot of shoes.

My caparitive is that I love shoes but certain kinds of shoes.

There is imagery I can picture someone picking out shoes.

  19. “Life Doesn’t Frighten me” has a better meaning to because I like how it was about a girl with lots of courage and bravery. To live you have to have courage and now that god is with.

I have a connection with “Choosing Shoes” because at the beginning of each school year my mom takes me and my siblings to get new shoes. We always take a long time because we will have till next year and you can only choose one paer.

I like “Life Doesn't Frighten me” is what I choose to win. I like the rhyme scheme which was AAAB. There was also repetition because it repeated life doesn’t frighten me at all a lot. While I was reading “Life Doesn't Frighten me” I noticed that it was written in first person. I hope “Life Doesn't Frighten me” wins round 8 game 2!!!!

  21. I think is “ Life doesn’t frighten ” is more meaningful because it shows that you should not be afraid so many things.

I make a connection with “Choosing Shoes” because once in my life. I went to a shoe place, and I didn’t know which shoes to choose.

I Think the winner is “Life doesn’t Frighten me” because it’s a really true poem ,and I also kind of make a connection to. I also like the poem because of the rhyme scheme. The rhyme is (AAABB). Another reason I like the poem is because of the imagery. I can imagine a shadow wall. I really hope this poem wins.

  22. I think Life Doesn’t Frighten Me at All,” means the most to me. Sometimes when I am going on a trip and I don’t feel the safest, or when I am with people who I might not know the best I don’t feel the safest at all. But when I think about it you can’t live your life in fear. If you do you will not have the best life. I think the people who love their life have the best lives. When I get to go out of the country to cool places and I’m frightened. There are people in the world who don’t have those kind of opportunities so I don’t want to take them for granted. I like this poem because of the great lesson it shows.

I made a connection with “Choosing Shoes,” because I am in love with shoes. I am always on the computer or some kind of device and I’m shopping for shoes. When I do that I am pretty sure if I go up to my parents and say I found a cool pair of shoes can I have them. That’s probably not going to happen. I’m usually customizing shoes putting every color into them and making them the wildest shoes ever. Sometimes I find a way to put my name on my shoes or write something silly. I love shoes and all of the different varieties of styles and color.

I like the writer’s craft for “Choosing Shoes” better the the other poem. I think it has a lot of it in the poem so that’s why I picked this one. But I think “Life Doesn’t Frighten Me at All” has some great writer’s craft to. Some of the many ways the poem I chose has writer’s craft in it is. First it has a bunch of alliteration for example in this poem it says pretty pointy shoes and dandy dance shoes flat shoes fat shoes. Another way it shows writer’s craft is it shows rhyme scheme for example the rhyme scheme of the poem is AAAB. Since “Choosing Shoes” has all of the writer’s craft and I have a great connection to it I chose “Choosing Shoes” as the winner.

  23. I can’t make a connection because I get scared easily. However My cousin is practically made of stone because she never seems to be afraid.
Some writer’s craft in “Life Doesn’t Frighten Me” is imagery because I can Sea a girl walking along an ocean floor looking at all the aloborite sea creatures. The author also used rhyme scheme. The poem has a rhyme scheme of ABBACCDD. The author also used repetition because the author repeats the line “Life Doesn't frighten me at all”.

  24. “Life Doesn’t Frighten Me” has a deeper meaning to me because it teaches a valuable life lesson no matter what God will protect you

“Choosing Shoes.” I always have had a hard time choosing shoes at a store. I always took for hours to pick shoes that look good on me.

I pic "Life Doesn't Frighten Me" for the winner.

  25. “Choosing Shoes” has a better meaning to me. I like it because there are so many different types of shoes and different people buy different ones.

I have a better connection with “Choosing Shoes.” For example I never know what shoes to get because there are so many different kinds and colors.

I think “Choosing Shoes” ahs better poet’s craft. It has a rhyme scheme of AAAB on the first paragraph. Also they use alliteration. “Pretty Pointy shoes.” I think that “Choosing Shoes” should win.

  26. The poem “Life Doesn’t Frighten Me” means the most to me because I think life should not frighten people. I also think that it is saying not to let things scare you.

My connection with these poems is that life sometimes does scare me.

I like the way the writer repeats the line “Life doesn’t frighten me at all”, and I also like the way the writer says that the boy can walk on the ocean floor and never have to breath. I think the clear winner is “Life Doesn’t Frighten Me”.

    ReplyDelete
  27. “Life Doesn’t Frighten Me” is more meaningful in my opinion. The lesson is that life has scary situations, but you can’t be scared. You have to stick up for yourselves.

I can connect with “Choosing Shoes.” I always buy new shoes every year.

“LIfe Doesn’t Frighten Me at All” has great writers craft. First, it has repetition. For example, it states, “I can walk on the ocean floor. And never have to breathe. Life doesn’t frighten me at all. Not at all. Not at all. Life doesn’t frighten me at all.” I also like the rhyme scheme. It is AAABBACCA. I think “Life Doesn’t Frighten Me at All” is the winner.

  28. The first poem I read was “choosing shoes.” It is about all of the different shoes you can get.Like red shoes, low shoes, and bright shoes.

THe second poem I read was “Life Doesn't frighten me” It is about a person and how not even the scariest things can not scare him/her.

I thank the winner is “life doesn't frighten me.” I like the way they put it in words and the rhythm scheme for the first 5 lines is AAABBA .

  29. “Life doesn’t Frighten me” meant more to me because it tells you not to be afraid of your life but to enjoy it. This was a great poem and would suggest it to everybody as a life lesson.

I can relate to “Choosing Shoes” because I never know what shoes I want to wear or what shoes I should wear. So I think a lot of people can relate to this poem.

I choose “Choosing Shoes” because it is a funny poem that I can relate to a lot. This poem is the best poem out of the two, so it deserves to win.

  30. I can make a connection with “Choosing shoes”, because I like to go look for new shoes sometimes. And usually all the good shoes are too expensive to buy, but the affordable ones are all shoes that don't last for a long time.

I think “Life doesn't frighten me” Has a more important meaning to me, Because it talks about how you should always have courage even when everything is frightens you.

I think that the winner should be “Choosing shoes”, because it uses rhyme scheme its rhyme scheme is AAAB. it also uses an onomatopoeia like stump, I hope this poem wins!

  31. The poem” Life Doesn’t Frighten Me” has a deeper feeling to me because you can trust the Lord and know he is there. For example, if you are in a bad situation just know that the Lord is there with you. The second reason this poem has a deeper meaning to me is because this could be realistic. I can imagine a person being strong an telling herself that she won’t be frightened about what God has planned for her.

I have a connection with the poem” Choosing Shoes.” The connection I have with this poem is that sometimes I debate on something. Second, I also have connection when the poem said,” Wipe-them-on-the-mat shoes.” I have a connection with that sentence because if I just played outside in the mud or dirt I usually just take my shoes off on a mat. I don’t normally worry about what happens to the shoes after a wipe them on the mat and take them off. The last connection I have with this poem is that I think some things might be better than others. For example, at the baginning of this poem it talked about bright, new, and pretty pointy-toe shoes. At the end of the poem it talked about shoes that were not as good. Those shoes were flat, fat, stump-along-like-that, and wipe-them-on-the-matshoes. That is what the poet called them.

I think the poem” Life Doesn’t Frighten Me” has better poet’s craft. I think this poem has better poet’s craft because it has rhyme scheme. The rhyme scheme for this poem is AAAB. Second, this poem also has imagery. I can imagine this poem of aperson being strong and beliveing in herself that life won’t frighten her. Lastly, this poem has better poet’s craft because it has repetition. This poemkeeps on repeating the word “I.” I think this poem should advance on into the next round.

  32. I think “Life Doesn’t Frighten Me” should win because I can relate feeling like I can do anything and accomplish everything sometimes. This is a great poem that I can relate to sometimes.
This poem “Life Doesn’t Frighten Me” is touching because this person is self confident that she can do anything, accomplish everything, and face her greatest fears. This is a very inspiring poem.
“Life Doesn’t Frighten Me” has a great rhyme scheme. AAABBACCADDAEEFFGG. I like how they repeat life doesn't frighten me at all that’s some good repetition.

  33. The first, poem is called “Life Doesn’t Frighten Me,”
    This poem is about
    A boy who says
    He is not afraid of
    Anything. For example,
    Shadows on the
    Wall noises down the hall
Life doesn’t frighten me at all.

The Second poem is called “Choosing Shoes,”
This poem is about a person
    Who is talking about all
    Different kinds of
    Shoes. For example,
    Red shoes pink shoes
    Blue shoes. Tell me,
    What would you choose?

The winner poem is ”Choosing Shoes,”
    Because I enjoy
    Shopping for shoes.
    Another reason is
    They used a lot of
    Repetition. They also
    Used rhyme scheme
    For example, AAAB
    Over all I think that
    “Choosing Shoes,” is
    A really good poem.
