Now that you have read through all of the poems and chosen a winner to advance to the Elite 8, the pressure has mounted. Read the winners of Game 6 and Game 8.
Choose your winner based on the following criteria:
- Which poem's meaning is more important to you?
- What personal connection can you make?
- Which poet's craft do you enjoy more? Be sure to give examples.
- Poet's craft can include: repetition, imagery, personification, rhyme, alliteration, couplets, onomatopoeia, simile/metaphor, etc
Make sure your answer is detailed and explains the three bullet points.
Here is an example of proficient writing:
“Mother to Son” has a more important meaning to me because it is talking about a woman who was probably a slave telling her boy that life isn't going to be easy but to not give up.
My connection is with the poem “Casey at the Bat.” I have been on a softball team before and struck out when my team really needed a hit. I can imagine how the fans and the player feel when the game is over, and they do not win.
I like “Mother to Son's” writer’s craft more because it rhymes better and the way it is written sounds like the mother is from the South .For example, she says, "I'se been a-climbin' on" and "turnin' corners." I also enjoyed that the poem is a metaphor comparing life to a flight of stairs that is hard to climb. The poet's mother encourages him to never give up but keep trying even though life is hard. “Mother to Son” should win this game.
“The New Suite” has a better meaning to me. Whenever there is something nice usually people are very cautious about getting it messy.
ReplyDeleteI have a better connection with “The New Suit.” My connection is, that whenever I wear something new or nice my mom is always very cautious. She says, “Don’t get it messy.”
I think “The New Suit” has better poet’s craft. For example, alliteration. “Striped Suit, a terrific tie” Also a rhyme scheme of ABCDEF on the first six lines. I think “The New Suit” should win.
ReplyDeleteThe poem,”Do you Carrot at all for me” is the most meaningful because it’s talking about do you care for me. If I fall down will you help me up?
I make a connection with,”The New Suit” because one time I had a new dress on ,and I didn’t want to spill anything on it.
I think the winner should be, “The new Suit” because I make a connection with it. I also like the poem because of the repetition. The repetition is since it dribbles and be ready to dribble. Another reason I like this poem is because of the alliteration. The alliteration is ice cream, cake.
I really enjoyed this poem I hope it wins.
"The New Suit" means more to me because of how the guy liked to wear comfortable clothes.
ReplyDeleteMy connection is that I have had to get fitted for suits multiple times for the weddings I have been in.
I like the writer's craft the most in "The New Suit." the best because of the alliteration in the line striped suit, a terrific tie. I think "The New Suit" should win.

ReplyDelete“Do you Carrot all for me?” is more meaningful because it is about a person asking or proposing to someone.
ReplyDeleteI can connect with “The New Suit” because I had trouble keeping my suit clean at a wedding once.
“Do you Carrot all for me?” has better writer’s craft. It has metaphors. For example, it states “You are a peach.” I like that it says things like “My heart beets for you”. But, instead of voting for that poem, I choose “The New Suit” as the winner.
For me the winner is “The New Suit”. “The New Suit” is a funny and relatable poem.
ReplyDeleteI can relate to “The New Suit” because I have been to a birthday party (not my own but my cousins) and I have been uncomfortable. Ever since then I wear comfy clothes to enjoy the fun.
One piece of writer’s craft is imagery because I can almost see a boy in a new suit looking wistfully at the ice cream. Also, the author use onomatopoeia. An example would be dribble and drip. There is also alliteration in the line "Terrific tie".
“Do You Carrot all for me?” meant more to me because love how it wonders if you do carrot all for you or not. This is a great poem and should be the best poem ever made.
ReplyDelete“Do You Carrot all for me?” can relate to me more because I wonder if people even know I am there. This poem can really relate to me. This is truly the best poem ever made.
“Do You Carrot all for me?” is definitely my winner. This should be the one to win. I would choose this poem over any of the other poems.
“Do You carrot at all for me” means the most to me because my brother does not completely care for me. This poem uses foods that are grown in soil like my heart beets for you. This poem also uses rhymes to explain why this teaches you a lesson. Like treat others the way you want to be treated.
ReplyDelete“The New Suit” I can make a connection with because my mom is always like don’t wear that you will get it trashed, and it was brand new she had just got it for me to wear. This poem actually teaches you a lesson about opinions it is someone’s opinion that he will get the suit dirty.
“The New Suit” is my winner because I can relate to whoever this happened to. The description of the suit was actually explained what it looked like. The writer’s craft used a form of repetition and imagery.
“The New Suite” has a better meaning to me, whenever there is sometimes nice usually I am very cautious about getting it messy.
ReplyDeleteI made a connection with ”The New Suit” because a time I had a new shirt on and I was really cautious because I didn't want to spill anything on it.
I think “The New Suit” has better poet’s craft because it has alliteration “Striped Suit, a terrific tie” also a rhyme scheme of ABCDEF on the first six lines. I think “The New Suit” should be the winner.
The poem that means the most to me is “The New suit.” It reminds me of all the messes I make sometimes when I’m not even trying. But I’m not the only one who has spills in my family. I have been to a restaurant called Uncle Julio's, and I have been there three different times. All three of those visits have been me walking out looking like I had just taken a shower. That means I have spilled my drink all three times I have been there. That’s just one of the stories I could tell you. But it reminds me of all of the fun times we have spent on making a seen while cleaning up in a nice restaurant. This poem means a lot to me and I love it so much. I hope to see this poem in the championship round.
ReplyDeleteThe poem that I made a connection with is “The New Suit.” Sometimes my mom tells me she ordered me a few easter suits to try on or something like that. I will try them on and see which one fits. When easter comes I will put my suit on because it is a very special day. I will play with my friends and slide on the grass and make stains on my new suit. Then we will go easter egg hunting where I will get so much chocolate on my shirt. Then I might play a football game with my friend and get even more grass stains on my suit. I will also mess up my hair which my mom hates a lot to. But when I come to her when we are ready to leave she will not be happy, but this will be my response I had fun. I love this poem and it reminds me of all of the memories and not just Easter.
I like the writer’s craft for “The New Suit” better than the other poem. It shows a lot of writer’s craft and I’m not surprised. It shows many different ways you can use it. A couple of them are alliteration, rhyme scheme, and onomatopoeia. One way it shows alliteration is striped suit or terrific tie. This poems rhyme scheme is ABACE. The last way it shows writer’s craft is onomatopoeia. One way it shows onomatopoeia is in the sentence Don’t eat ice cream because it might drip. For these reasons I choose “The New Suit” as my winner. I love this poem because it reminds me of great memories I have had with my family. I hope to see this poem in the final four and maybe the championship.
“The New Suit” has a better meaning to me. I get it why he did not want to get ice cream or juice on a new suit.
ReplyDeleteMy conection is with “Do You carrot all for me.” we have a garden and grow all those things and they taste really good.
I think “The New Suit” is the winner. It has better writers craft. It has alliterarion “Striped suit” “terrific tie” It also has imagery.
I can relate to “The New Suit” because my dad likes me to keep my suit very clean. So when I leave it on the couch he gets mad or when I get it dirty. He does not like when I wrinkle it.
ReplyDelete“The New Suit” is nice to read because touching in a way to no that this person also has someone that bugs you about having your suit having to be all clean. That you are not the only one who has someone bugging you.
“The Suit New” has good alliteration in it. For example “Striped suit” and “Terrific tie”. I like the onomatopoeia. “Juice, drink it slowly since it dribbles”.
The New Suit” had more of an important meaning to me because it was about a man who got a really nice and expensive suit to wear to a party. When he got to the party he couldn't eat anything because if he split it it would ruin the new suit. I think “The New Suit” was to showed how expensive things aren’t always the best thing, and I also think the next party he goes to he will wear old clothes.
ReplyDeleteMy connection to “The New Suit” is from every time I eat. When I eat I always get some sort of food on my clothes, and I would assume so the the man in “The New Suit” does too. I think the because he wouldn’t eat anything because if he split it would ruin the new suit.
I liked the writer's craft better in “The New Suit” than in “Do You Carrot All for Me”. It used alliteration and imagery. The alliteration “The New Suit” used was striped suit and terrific tie. It imagery when it described ice cream dripping and when described how he was going crazy. I hope “The New Suit” wins!!
I have a better connection with,”The New Suit,” because the poem says not to eat ice cream because it drips, don’t drink juice because it dribbles, and don’t eat chocolate bombs because they might explode. My parents sometimes tell me to not eat deserts or sweets. Second, I have connection with this poem because when the person was wearing a lot of nice clothes ,and he couldn’t eat or drink the sweet. Sometimes, I regret doing something or maybe even wearing something that prevents me from doing another thing. Lastly, I have a connection with this poem because the is about parties and I really like having and going to parties.
ReplyDeleteThe poem,” The New Suit,” has a better meaning to me because when my parents go to parties they usually wear nice clothes. For this poem the person wears a really nice suit. The second reason I chose this poem to have a better meaning is because I have to wear nice clothes when I go to events that are very important. For example, I have to wear nice clothes when I go to a fancy resturant. The last reason I chose this poem to have a better meaning to me is because when the poem talks about the party next year. I sometimes think about an event in the upcoming year if I had lots of fun at it.
I think the poem,” The New Suit,” also has better poet’s craft. I think this poem has better poet’s craft because it has alliteration where the poem says,”Striped suit,” and,”Terrific tie.” The second reason I think think this poem has better poet’s craft is because it has imagery. For example, I can imagine someone actually at a party with a nice suit. The last reason I think this poem has better poet’s craft is because it has rhyme scheme. The rhyme scheme for this poem is ABCD. I think the poem,” The New Suit,” should win and advance on in the tournament.

Because it has alliteration.
“The New Suit” was the second poem I read. It was about someone who got a new suit for a party. When they got to the party they could barely eat anything because they didn’t want to spill. The next party they go to they will just wear old clothes, so they can eat and drink everything. While I was reading “The New Suit” I noticed that it was written in first person.
ReplyDeleteI don’t have a winner. I like “The New Suit” because I liked the alliterations it used. For example, it used striped suit and terrific tie. I liked “How to Eat a Poem” because of the rhyme scheme. The rhyme scheme for “How to Eat a Poem” was ABCB. I like both poems, and wonder which one will win.

ReplyDeleteI make a connection with “The New Suit” because I once wore a new dress to a party, and I wished I didn’t have to be so careful not to spill anything on it.
I think “Do you carrot all for me?” is the winner. I like how it has personification. Because, vegetables can’t talk. And how it says stuff like “lettuce marry.” Or, “My heart beets for you.” I thought it was cool how the author did that. And I like it how it has no rhyme scheme like most all of the other poems do. I thought it was very good and I hope it wins!
“Do you Carrot all for me.” has a sweeter meaning. Because someone is telling someone how they love each other using vegetables.
ReplyDelete“New Suit,” I can make a connection with. Because when my dad goes shopping for new suits it is just like the person in the poem.
The winner in my opinion is “Do you Carrot all for me,” because it has a sweeter meaning in my opinion. The writer's craft is metaphor of “ you are a peach” and a rhyme scheme of ABCDEF. I hope “Do you Carrot all for me.” is the winner!
I think that “The New Suit” should win because it was very funny. It is about a man who wears a suit to a party and feels left out. He feels left out because he has a new suit that he doesn’t want to get dirty. I can make a connection to that. One time I went to a birthday party and I wore nice clothes. Everybody else was wearing normal clothes. I noticed that it has a lot of writers craft. One of them was alliteration. For example, when it said “Striped suit” or “Terrific Tie” another writer's craft I noticed was it had onomatopoeia. For example, when it said chocolate bombs might explode! And be ready to dribble. ReplyDeleteI can make a connection with “The New Suit” because whenever I’m in nice clothes I can’t eat anything messy. This poem is funny!
I think “Do you carrot all for me?” should win because of clever wordplay, imagery, and metaphors. It uses wordplay because it replaces words with vegetables and fruits. For example, it says, “Do you carrot all for me?” instead of, “Do you care at all for me?” You can tell it shows imagery because you can imagine that it’s about a man/woman righting a love letter. It has metaphors because it compares words to veggies and fruits. I hope this poem wins!
ReplyDeleteI think “The New Suit” has a better meaning to me because it is about a person that wears a suit to their birthday party. They regret wearing the suit because he can’t get it dirty at all.
My connection with “The New Siut” is when I went to my grandparents 50th anniversary party I wore a suit and I couldn't get it dirty. I couldn’t eat the cookies because it was very messy.
“The New Suit” used writer's craft such as onomatopoeia. It used this when it said “Don’t eat ice cream because it might drip.” Also, it used alliteration when it said “terrific tie” and “Striped suit.” I hope “The New Suit” wins.
“Do You Carrot All For Me?” is about someone who talks about marriage. It uses funny phrases like, “lettuce marry”. The poem is all about vegetables and it is very funny.
ReplyDelete“The New Suit” is about a man who wears a fancy suit to a party. He doesn’t want to get dirty, so he doesn’t eat anything. He says that next year he will wear a suit that he can get messy in. I pick “The New Suit” because the author uses more writer’s craft. One example of writer’s craft is alliteration. It uses alliteration when it says striped suit. This poem should definitely win.
I think that “The New Suit” has a deeper meaning. I think this because it is about how sometimes you regret things, but it can always be fixed, even if that is in the future.
ReplyDeleteMy connection is to “The New Suit.” It reminds me of a book I have about a lion who dresses up very fancy for a party and regretted it.

“Do you carrot for me?” Is about someone telling a love story. With fruits and veggies.
ReplyDelete“The New Suit.” Is about a kid who has to go to nice party. And has to wear a tux.
I like “The New Suit.” The rhyme scheme is ABCDE that is just the first five line. I had to go to the ballel ball for my mom and I had to wear a tux
“The New Suit” has a better meaning to me because it is about a guy who wore a fancy suit, but the suit was so nice that everybody told him not to eat the treats because it could get on his suit. At the end he did not have any fun. This teaches us that it doesn’t matter what you have on at a party unless you have fun. Another reason why this has a better meaning is because the other poem did not have the best meaning. This has a good meaning.
ReplyDeleteI don’t have a good connection with either of the poems, but I’ll choose “The New Suit” because I have been to parties where I've had a collared shirt on. It didn’t affect how much fun I had though. I don’t have a good connection with either of the poems.
“The New Suit” has a better writers craft because it used rhyme scheme. For example, the first stanza’s rhyme scheme is ABACDE. Another reason why is because it used a idiom. For example, the idiom was, “Who’s that stuffed breathless inside a tight suit.” my third reason why is because it used alliteration. For example, one line was, “a terrific tie.” my final reason why is because it used imagery. For example, I can imagine the ice cream that might drip. I think this poem is the clear winner.
I can make a connection with “The New Suit” because I never like having to buy something for a certain acashion and then I endup never wearing it again.
ReplyDeleteI think “Do you Carrot all for me?” is more amusing because I think that it is very funny and I like how the author changed words into fruits and veggies.
I think that “The New Suit” should win because it has lots of writer's craft.
