Your response needs to be a paragraph with at least 3 sentences, but you do not need to summarize the meaning of the poems. Instead, your response should include the following information:
- Which poem's meaning is more important to you?
- What personal connection can you make?
- Which poet's craft do you enjoy more? Poet's craft can include repetition, word choice, rhyme, simile/metaphor, etc.
I think Mother to Son should win because it has more meaning. It is about a mom and a son talking to each other saying that when life gets hard go through it. I can relate to that, one time when my uncle died, it tore me apart. I loved him so much, but my mom and dad helped me get through it. I made a connection saying when life gets hard keep going no matter what are the consequences. I think Mother to Son should win because it reminds me of my uncle and how it helped me get through the hard time.
ReplyDelete“Mother to Son” feels more meaningful to me because it reminds me that life will have ups and downs and sometimes will not go how you plan it. I also like it because it uses repetition and metaphors. That is why I like “Mother to Son”.
ReplyDelete“Choosing Shoes” I think is better.I like the writer's craft in the poem. The rhyme scheme is AAAB. It used repetition. For example the author said,’’New Shoes, new shoes’’. It used alliteration. For example the author said,’’Dandy-Dance-by-night shoes.’’ The main reason I like this poem is because it was funny. A connection I made to the poem was that I always have a hard time picking shoes out at the store. I think It should win!

ReplyDeleteI think “Mother to Son” is the winner. This is because I like the writer’s craft and it has a better meaning to me. This poem uses metaphor and repetition. For example, “Life for me ain’t been no crystal stair.” I hope "Mother to Son" wins!
“Mother to Son,” is the better poem. I love the meaning of never giving up. I think the author is trying to make a point that you should never give up no matter what you are doing. I think that God would also say what the author says. Keep trying your hardest and your best is good. A connection I have is when my parents give me one of those parent talks. They tell me that trying is all that you have to do. They also tell me to never give up. I also like how the author has great writer's craft. For example, the author repeats the phrase “crystal stair.” The author also compare life to a crystal stair. I wish that the author had used some more writer's craft such as onomatopoeia, couplets, and rhyme scheme. “Mother to Son” is the clear winner.

ReplyDeleteI think “Mother to Son” should win because of the meaning. The meaning is a mother telling her son that life is hard, but you should keep on moving. I like how she said, “Life for me ain’t been no crystal stair.” She was comparing herself to a crystal stair. The mother says the stairs have nails, and the boards wear torn up. I hope this poem wins!
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, “Mother To Son” should win this game. Because of its meaning and poet’s craft, this poem should go on to the championship. It uses repetition when it says, “Life for me ain’t been no crystal stair,” imagery when it says, “places with no carpet on the floor,” and teaches the oh-so meaningful lesson of perseverance. “Mother To Son” should win!

ReplyDeleteI choose “Mother to Son” because it has a deeper meaning to me when the mother says that life isn’t perfect, but should keep going. Also, it has better writer’s craft. For example, the author uses repetition when he repeats two times “Life for me ain’t been no crystal stair.” I like how he also uses metaphors when the mother compares life to a staircase with no carpet, boards torn up, places with no carpet, and sometimes it is dark. "Mother to Son" should win.
ReplyDeleteI think “Mother to Son” is the winner because it has a better meaning. I feel like it has more of an important meaning then “Choosing Shoes.” I think that because the mother is telling her son that he can’t give up when times are hard, and you just have to keep trying like she did. She told him to not fall down and stop trying. Her life reminds me of a slaves life. Where she has to work all day. Maybe she is a slave, because her life reminds me of how hard it was back then. I like the repetition, “Life for me ain’t been no crystal stair.” It also is comparing her life to the opposite of a crystal stair. I hope this poem wins!!!!!
ReplyDeleteI like “Mother to Son.” This poem has a meaning to all. For me it means life is hard for these people. This poem made sense to me because my grandma says stuff like this.
ReplyDeleteI think “Choosing Shoes,” should win! Because I think it has better writers craft. Onomatopoeia when it says “pretty pointy shoes.” And rhyme scheme of AAAB. And repetition of “New shoes, New shoes. I think “Choosing Shoes” should win!
ReplyDeleteI think the winner is “Mother to Son” because I like the meaning to the poem. It is a sweet poem and I think people could relate to this poem. I also like how the mother compares life to a crystal stair. I think this poem should go to the final two.
ReplyDeleteI like “Mother to Son” better because I think the meaning is really strong, and really meaningful. Also, I think this mom will stick with her son throughout life. I can tell that their life has not been easy. They either live in hard place and time period, or they are slaves. I think this is a really good poem, and I think it deserves to win. I can’t wait to see this poem in the championship.
ReplyDelete“Mother to Son” should be the winner because of its meaning and writers craft. I really like the meaning because it's telling you to never give up. It’s also telling you that you will go thru rough times. I also like how it has repetition. Also like how she uses metaphors like “Life for me ain’t been no crystal stair.” So I hope it wins for a third time!
ReplyDeleteI choose “Choosing Shoes” as the winner because it put us in the poem. For example, it told us about what shoes we wanted to wear. Another reason why is because it was entertaining. I also liked how the poem used rhyme scheme. For example, the first stanza’s rhyme scheme is AAAB. another reason why is because it used couplets. For example, the couplet was “New shoes, new shoes red and pink and blue shoes.” one more reason is because it used quadrons. For example, one quadrin was “ Buckle shoes, bow shoes, pretty pointy-toe shoes, strappy, cappy low shoes; Lets have some to try.” another reason why is because it used imagery. For example, it described every shoe so well that I could imagine it. I also liked how it used repetition. For example, it repeated shoes a lot. Another reason why is because it used alliteration. For example, one line was “Buckle shoes, bow shoes.” My final reason why is because it made me think about all the different types of shoes I could buy. This poem is the clear winner.
ReplyDeleteI want “Choosing Shoes” to win because it has the better meaning for example of when it was when colored people where not treated as well as the everyone else. Also I have a connection when I read a book about segregation. I enjoy the “Choosing Shoes” writer's craft because it uses repetition by saying “If they’d let us buy.
ReplyDeleteI think that “Mother to Son” should win. I like this poem because of the meaning. I like the meaning because it says that life is not perfect. That is definitely true. Also it says that you just have to work hard and be the person God made you to be. I think that “Mother to Son” is the winner!
ReplyDeleteI think the winner should be,”Life doesn’t Frighten me” because I make connection with the poem. Sometimes in life I get scared of things that I probably should not be frightened of. I also think this poem should win because of the writer's craft. One of the writer’s craft is. The rhyme scheme. The rhyme scheme is. (AAABB).
ReplyDeleteI think that "mother to son" should win because it has a more important meaning to me. It talks about how life can sometimes be hard but you should never quit. I hope that this poem wins!
ReplyDeleteI like “Mother to Son” better because she is talking to her son one on one. It also has a better meaning to me. You can tell that she has been though a lot since she was a little kid. She might have been a slave. I think “Mother to Son” is the winner by far.
ReplyDeleteIthink ¨Mother to Son¨ should win because of the way the mother in the poem says a metaphor that ¨Life ain't no crystal stair¨. Also I think that poem means more to me. Lastly I think ¨Mother to Son¨ should win is that I can agree with the mom. I don't think life is always perfect.
ReplyDeleteIgnore this paragraph.
DeleteI think ¨Mother to Son¨ should win because of the way the mother in the poem says a metaphor that ¨Life ain't no crystal stair¨. Also I think that poem means more to me. Lastly I think ¨Mother to Son¨ should win is that I can agree with the mom. I don't think life is always perfect
ReplyDeleteI think the winner is “Mother to Son.” Because I Like how it is like the story my sister told me about how she used to have drive from hendersonville to oak hill school every day for school. she had to get up early and had no time to eat breakfast. I also like how it is telling you to not sit down and just keep trying.
ReplyDeleteI think mother to son should win because it has a better meaning. For example, it tells you that you should enjoy your life while you have it and don’t not enjoy it. I also liked it because of the writer's craft. For example, it used repetition. It capped on repeating and. This is a great poem and i hope everyone else feels the same way about it.
ReplyDeleteI think the winner is “Mother to Son” because I like the meaning to the poem and I think that other mothers can relate to it and maybe my mom can relate to it.
ReplyDeleteI choose "Life Doesn't Frighten Me" because of the opinion that is told. He is not trying to tell a fact that is his opinion that life doesn't frighten him. The writer's craft that is used is imagery when he talks about what is going on and the setting of it, and he uses rhymes into rhyme scheme.
ReplyDelete“Life Doesn’t Frighten Me” is the winner because it has an important lesson. It’s to keep going, don’t be afraid of life, build up courage, and be strong against the tough things. Another reason is that it keeps saying, “Life doesn’t frighten me at all.” I want to see this poem in the championship!
ReplyDeleteI choose “Life Doesn’t Frighten Me” over “Mother to Son” because I like the meaning and the writer’s craft. The author used rhyme scheme in this poem and alliteration . For example, the first four lines are AAAB and she used alliteration when she said “Bad dogs barking.” When the author used repetition repeated “frighten me at all” she used repetition. Also, I look at this poem and see that this is a girl telling us that she is brave and I know that not just boys are brave. GIRL POWER!!!! I hope “Life Doesn’t Frighten Me” wins the final four round one!
ReplyDeleteI like both of the poems that are in this match. I would hate to see one of the two poems go out of the tournament. They both have great writer’s craft, a great lesson, and a great entertaining story. I don’t even think the poems are made for entertainment. But I know I have to choose one not both. I think the best poem is the poem that I can connect to and the poem that will keep me entertained. I have come across a few poems in the tournament that I like but they don’t have a lot of detail. I like the writer’s craft in both of the poems and that just makes it that much harder to choose. I also have to think about what are my two favorite poems in the final four. When I figure that out I have to keep voting on those poems. Also when I look and see what my friends wrote I need to do what I like not what they like.
ReplyDeleteI think the winner of this match is “Mother to Son.” I choose this poem because it shows a great lesson and one that I will definitely follow. It has amazing writer’s craft that is very good. Some of the writer’s craft shown in the poem is repetition and rhyme scheme. The rhyme scheme for this poem is ABCDEF. It shows repetition because it says
And reachin landin’s
And turnin corners
And sometimes goin in the dark.
For these reasons I pick “Mother to Son” as my winner for this amazing match.
For me the winner is “Life doesn’t Frighten Me”. “Life Doesn't Frighten Me” is a nice and poetic poem that really holds on to one theme.
ReplyDeleteThe reason I like “Life Doesn’t Frighten Me” is because the author use imagery. I can almost see a boy holding out a snake to a girl and waiting for her to scream. Also, the author use rhyme scheme. The rhyme scheme on line seventeen through twenty four is AABBCDDC.
I choose “Mother to Son” because she has a cool voice and she is saying to never give up on your dreams or to never quit on life because life ain't no crystal stair. It’s a very inspiring poem to me. It repeats “Life ain’t no crystal stair” that is alliteration. That’s also a very good metaphor to.
ReplyDeleteI think “Life Doesn’t Frighten Me” is the winner because it has a great meaning. It uses repetition, rhyme scheme.
ReplyDeleteI think the poem,”Life Doesn’t Frighten Me,” should win. I think this poem should win because it has rhyme scheme. The rhyme scheme for this poem is AAAB. The second reason I chose this poem to win is because it has imagery. I can imagine a tough girl possibly in these situations having a hard time. Also I can imagine her perservering through these situations and being strong. It doesn’t matter if you are a boy or a girl, you can still be strong. The third reason I chose this poem to win is because it has onomatopoeia where the poem says,”I go boo.” The sound effect, “Boo,” in the poem is onomatopeia. The fourth reason I chose this to win is because it means a lot to me. This poem means a lot to me because we can trust in God in these situations and know he is there. We are Christians, so we believe that he is there. Also we don’t have to worry then. My last reason I chose this poem to win is because if you had a bad day because you were in a hard situation. This could almost be a good poem to read, so the next time you are in a hard situation you can think of this poem. You know what the poem said, so you can be strong the next time.
