Now that you have read through all of the poems and chosen a winner to advance to the Elite 8, the pressure has mounted. Read "Mother to Son" and "The Eagle."
In Round 2, you need to choose your winner based on the following criteria:
- Which poem's meaning is more important to you?
- What personal connection can you make?
- Which poet's craft do you enjoy more? Poet's craft can include repetition, imagery, personification, rhyme, simile/metaphor, etc.
Here is an example of advanced/proficient writing:
Mother to Son has a more important meaning to me because it is talking about a
woman who was probably a slave telling her boy that life isn't going to be easy and
I really think that goes close to my heart. And I feel bad for them.
My connection is with the poem, The Eagle.The eagle in the poem sounds like it is
the oldest and likes to take charge. I have a connection because I am the oldest
and I love to take charge and boss my little sister around.
I like Mother to Son's poem craft more because it rhymes better and the way it is
written sounds like the mother is from the South.
The Eagle has a very bold meaning to me because of the last line like a thunderbolt. I also think that it is cool because it's Rhyme Scheme is AAA and it is really unique.

Mother to Son has a more important meaning to me, because I think that it is caring and passionet how the mother tells her son that life is hard but that sometimes even in the toughest moments you have to keep on pushing ahead. I can make a connection with some friends I have who are refugees. Even though they are poor every time I see them they are always wearing a bright smile and carying lots of joy! I like how the writer uses a metaphor when the mother compares life to a crystle stair. That is why I choose Mother to Son as the winner.

The poem I choose to be the winner is The Eagle. I liked how it said "And Like A thunderbolt he falls," instead of saying. "And he falls." That is why I choose The Eagle.
I made a connection with the Eagle. The connection I made was that I went to the beach for spring break and noticed that the waves in the sea looked like they were wrinkled.

The poem I believe deserves to win is Mother to Son because it placed a clear image of a dark woman and her young son in a cabin.

The Eagle is about a eagle who see's things, stands tall, and he feels things below him. "He falls like a thunderbolt!!!" It uses AAABBB rhyme schemes.

I think the winner should be The Eagle because it uses better word pictures. I thought it used more action, for example: "like a thunderbolt he falls". In Mother to Son, there were fewer word pictures.
Mother To Son has a meaning that is saying that a mom a slave or a black person during the civil rights movement perhaps saying to her son that "life aint been no crystal stair" or life has been hard for her and it will for her son also.

The Eagle is a poem telling you how powerful and wonderful eagles are. It also has great imagery for example: The wrinkled seas beneath him crawls. Seas can't crawl.
ReplyDeleteMother to Son I can relate to because the meaning of the poem is to never give up and I try to never give up also. I really liked the repetition too. My favorite part of the repetition is when it said "Life ain't been no crystal stair."
I choose Mother to Son because I think the meaning is sweet, I can relate to it and it is a heart touching story. That's why I choose Mother to Son to win.
