Poetry Madness: Elite 8, Game 3!

As you can see in the picture above, "Roger the Dog" won in both classes! Before posting, please make sure your bracket is updated.

Now that you have read through all of the poems and chosen a winner to advance to the Elite 8, the pressure has mounted. Read the winners of Game 5 and Game 7.

Choose your winner based on the following criteria:
  • Which poem's meaning is more important to you?
  • What personal connection can you make?
  • Which poet's craft do you enjoy more? Be sure to give examples.
    • Poet's craft can include: repetition, imagery, personification, rhyme, alliteration, couplets, onomatopoeia, simile/metaphor, etc

Here is an example of a proficient blog post:

I chose “The Falling Star” as my favorite poem because I thought it had a deeper meaning. For example, I liked how it was about a special moment and you should not waste it. I try to enjoy the special moments I have with my grandparents when they come to visit.

I also liked this poem because I can make a connection. I really enjoy watching beautiful stars, too. I have fun looking at the stars at the beach with my family.

Finally, I really liked this poem because it had poet's craft. For example, it had a rhyme scheme AABBCC. Also, the author used couplets in the poem. For example, "I saw a star slide down the sky. Blinding the north as it went by." I enjoyed the writer’s craft in this poem.

This is why I chose The Falling Star as my favorite poem.

  18. I have read two poems. The first poem that I read was called “Choosing Shoes.” The second poem that I read was called “Life Doesn’t Frighten Me.” The poem that I felt gave the most meaning was “Life Doesn’t Frighten Me.” I thought this because this person keeps talking about how nothing frightens him. For example, he keeps repeating the exact same words over and over, “Life doesn’t frighten me at all.” He says these words ten times. That is why I thought this poem gave the most meaning. Out of both poems I found one poem that I could make a personal connection with and that poem was, “Choosing Shoes.” The connection I made with this poem was this, in “Choosing Shoes” it talks about all the fun, pretty, and cool shoes everyone likes , but once it comes to buying shoes the only shoes they’ll choose are the “Flat shoes, fat shoes, stump- along-like-that shoes, wipe -them-on-the-mat shoes, that’s the sort they’ll buy.” This is kind of what happens to me. Sometimes I want something I really like , but I end up having to get the things that I need. The poem that I thought had the best poet’s craft is “Choosing Shoes.” For example,It’s rhyme scheme is AAAB. This poem also uses couplets. For example, “Red and pink and blue shoes. Tell me, what would you choose.” The poem that I chose as my winner is “Choosing Shoes.” “Choosing Shoes” is the clear winner!

  24. The poem, “ Life Doesn’t Frighten Me ” means more to me than “Choosing Shoes”. For example I like how after two lines of saying how life doesn’t frighten me it says “Life doesn’t frighten me”. Also I like the personification. For example, “Big ghosts in a cloud and Dragons breathing flame.”

In the poem, “Life Doesn’t Frighten Me” I can make two text-to-self-connections. For example, both of my little brothers aren't afraid of anything. For example, Fletcher watches Incredible Hulk and he’s just a two year old! Another text-to-self-connection is also with Fletcher. For example, in the poem it has a line where it says “I go boo” and on halloween every time he saw something related to halloween he would say “boo” like four times!

In the poem,”Life Doesn’t Frighten Me” I have two favroite pieces of writer's craft. First, the personification. For example, “I can walk on the ocean floor and I never have to breathe”. I also like the alliteration. For example, “Bad dogs barking loud”. This is why I think “Life Doesn’t Frighten Me” should be the winner.
