Image result for elite 8
Now that you have read through all of the poems and chosen a winner to advance to the Elite 8, the pressure has mounted. Read the winners of Game 6 and Game 8.

Choose your winner based on the following criteria:
  • Which poem's meaning is more important to you?
  • What personal connection can you make?
  • Which poet's craft do you enjoy more? Be sure to give examples.
    • Poet's craft can include: repetition, imagery, personification, rhyme, alliteration, couplets, onomatopoeia, simile/metaphor, etc

Make sure your answer is detailed and explains the three bullet points.

Here is an example of proficient writing:
“Mother to Son” has a more important meaning to me because it is talking about a woman who was probably a slave telling her boy that life isn't going to be easy but to not give up.

My connection is with the poem “Casey at the Bat.” I have been on a softball team before and struck out when my team really needed a hit.  I can imagine how the fans and the player feel when the game is over, and they do not win.

I like “Mother to Son's” writer’s craft more because it rhymes better and the way it is written sounds like the mother is from the South .For example, she says, "I'se been a-climbin' on" and "turnin' corners." I also enjoyed that the poem is a metaphor comparing life to a flight of stairs that is hard to climb.  The poet's mother encourages him to never give up but keep trying even though life is hard. “Mother to Son” should win this game.

  1. The poem, “The Castle in the Fire” meant more to me because it was about a fairy-tale like story and the other poem didn’t mean that much to me.
I can make more of a personal connection to the poem, “How to Eat a Poem,” because I mean I wouldn’t be polite if I was to eat a poem. Also, it states all lot of stuff that I could relate to.
I chose the poem, “How to Eat a Poem,” because the other poem I didn’t really enjoy or like. The writer's craft was rhyme scheme was abac, the other one was alliteration when it said ready and ripe, and the third one is repetition like or or or or or.

  2. I can make a connection with “How to Eat a Poem” by Eve Merriam. I can make a connection because I’ve had food that I just have to dig in and don’t be polite, to feel the bursting flavors in your mouth, and to have the juice running down your face. I enjoyed “How to Eat a Poem.”

The poem “The Castle and the Fire” meant al ot to me. This poem ment a lot to me because it reminds me of when I was lttle, listening to my dad read me stories like The Hobbit or fantasy stories like that. I enjoyed “The Castle and the Fire.”

For the winner of the semi-semi finals, I choose “The Castle and the Fire.” by Mary Jane Carr. I choose this poem for many reasoons. The first, It was beautifuly written with words like ‘twas, veil, mail, and tumlut. The second reason, it had a great repeating ryme scheeme that was ABCB. The third reason, it was longer, so that you can enjoy it for more time. I think “The Castle and the Fire” should be the winner.

  3. ‘’Castle in the Fire’’ has more meaning because a man saves a girl from a castle with dragons around it. The man also thought about how the girl felt couped up in the tower.

I can relate more to ‘’How to Eat a poem.’’ I relate to this because sometimes you don’t want to always have to eat with manners. For example, my dad will not let me put my elbows on the table or I have to hold my fork a certain way.

I chose ‘’Castle in the Fire.’’ I chose this because you have to be very brave to defeat a dragon. One writer's craft that stuck out to me was the quatrain, and the rhyme scheme which was A-B-C-B. This is why I chose ‘’Castle in the Fire.’’

  4. The poem that means more to me is “The Castle In The Fire” because I use to watch a show where there was a knight and a princess. It also means a lot to me because I like the movie Shrek, and that movies is about a knight saving a princess from a evil person and dragons. That is why “The Castle In The Fire” means more to me.

I can make a connection to “The Castle In The Fire” because me and my sister used to play a princess and prince game, and the dragons that were always trying to kill us were our mom and dad. That is how I can make a connection to “The Castle In The Fire.”

I like the writer’s craft in “The Castle In The Fire” better because it has a lot of it. Some of the writer’s craft in the poem is alliteration. Like when it says “Guard the gate” and “Of the old.”There is some repetition in the poem to like when it says we saw a few times. “The Castle In The Fire” is made up of many quatrains that are all made up of the rhyme scheme ABCB. “The Castle In The Fire” is a definite winner.

  5. The first poem” Castle in The Fire” by Mary Jane Carr, is the most meaningful because it says,”A lady’s lovely face.” Was up in the window.
The second poem “How to Eat a Poem,” by Eve Merriam is more relatable because sometimes I get so hungry I feel like I can eat a paper or poem.
I choose” How to Eat a Poem” as a clear winner because it has repatition. For example, it says,”Or” over and over. It also has personification, because it says,”Lick the juice that may run down your chin.” A poem doesn’t realy have juice in it.

  6. The first poem,The Castle In The Fire” means nothing to me because it was just a fantasy story. My connection is that I have been saved by a person before.

The second poem,”How To Eat A Poem” means a little to me because I like to be silly. My connection is I have been silly before i my life.

I pick as my winner,”How To Eat A Poem.” I like its writer’s craft more. For example, it has repetition witch is “or”. It has a rhyme scheme witch is ABC. There is also personification because you can not really eat a poem.

  8. I chose “ The Castle in the Fire,” by Mary Jane Carr, because it has many special reasons. For example the first one the meaning. The meaning is fantasy which is my favorite thing to read and write so that made this very fun to read.

Another reason I chose “The Castle in the Fire” is because of all the personal connections I can make with it. For example, it reminds me of all the princess movies I watched when I was a kid. I remember the prince saved the princess from a dragon in Sleeping Beauty. This book is definitely my pick because of all the connections I can make.

The last but certainly not least reason I chose “ The Castle in the Fire” was because of all the poet's craft inside of it. Like, there is a quatrain, the alliteration “watched in wonder,” plus there the whole thing is imagery.

  9. I think,”The Castle in the fire” has a better meaning because the girl is scared and she needed someone to save her from the dragon. And than a prince comings and saves her and it is true love. This is not a big meaning but it kind of has a little meaning.

I can connect with “How to eat a poem” because I have read a lot of how to feed chickens and how to bake and so on. Also when I was little my friend ate a piece of paper out of the book and she said it tasted like popcorn without the butter.

I choose”The Castle in the Fire” because I like how it tells the story of the girl in the tower and how she gets saved from the dragon and how it uses detail.I also like how the author used a rhyme scheme as a quatrain for example ABAB e.t.c.The author also used repetition like… Then,And, and but. This is why I choose this poem.

  10. The Castle in the Fire

The Castle in the Fire is funny the dragon blew fire on the castle and everyone was scared a knight tried to fight the dragon but it did not go well.
I like dragons because they are weird cool and big. They would be fun to play with.
I like the part when it says a frame for a lovely woman's face.

    How to Eat a Poem.

How to Eat a Poem is funny because it says no fork no knife no nothing you use your hands.
To eat paper is not a good thing it is marker pencil pen sharpie.
You would get sick for eating that stuff.

I think the winner is How to eat a poem because it relates to are poetry madness and it is funny because paper in your mouth is not good.

  11. I like the meaning of the poem,”The Castle In The Fire,” by Mary Jane Carr, because I love to read books about girls trapped in a tower that’s on fire, and a prince comes and saves the day. I think the story is about a girl who is trapped in a tower that’s on fire, and there are dragons guarding the entrance, but a prince comes in riding on his horse and kills the dragons and saves the girl in the tower.

I like can make a connection to “How To Eat A Poem,” by Eve Merriam, because sometimes I pretend how to teach things to people and most of the time I have no idea what i’m talking about. “How To Eat A Poem” is about a guy trying teach and prepare people to eat a poem. I pretend to teach people how to play or do things just like the man teaching us how to eat a poem.

I chose “The Castle In The Fire,” by Mary Jane Carr, because I liked the poem better. I love to read books about stuff like “The Castle In The Fire.” This poem has a rhyme scheme of ABCBD and so on. 12. “The Castle And The Fire” has a more important meaning to me because it is a fairytale, with a prince saving a princess from a burning building, guarded by fire breathing dragons. The prince saves the princess and they ride away together. I liked this poem better, because the prince was very brave and saved someone out of kindness.

My connection was with” The Castle And The Fire.” When I was little I loved fairy tales, and my parents would always read me any fairytale I wanted. My favorite part was the end when the happy endings always happened.

I like,” The Castle And The Fire’s,” writer’s craft more because it has a great quatrain of six, but there was one that stuck out at me, when it said,”The andirons were the dragons, Set out to guard the gate Of the old enchanted castle, In the fire upon the grate.” I also liked the couplet when it said,”But, when the smoke had lifted, we saw to our delight the two riding away together, The lady and the knight.

  13. “How to eat a poem” should win because I like it, it says everything backwards and I can relate to it because sometimes my sister always acts like she eating a poem because she does the opposite what she should acts. The meaning of the poem to me is that she made this poem about the opposite of eating a real thing. The writer's crafts are imagery because when it says it doesn’t have all this stuff I can see it, the second writer’s craft is rhyme because the most of the poem it rhymes.

  15. The poem that means the most to me is “Castle in the Fire”because it said that a knight came just to save a women in a burning building. Then in the poem it said that they rode of so that meant that they feel in love. Also it was graded by a dragon.

A personal connection I can make with “Castle in the Fire “ is a T-W condition which is that so many movies and books have princesses stuck in a castle with a dragon and then a knight coming to save them.

The winner in my mind is” Castle in the Fire” because it has quatrain in the poem here is one “But ,when the smoke had lifted
    We saw,to our delight,
    Riding away together,
The lady and the knight”.I also like how it has onomatopoeia “roar.”

  20. The poem,”Do You Carrot All For Me,” has a good meaning. The meaning is more important to me is because it’s about someone writing a funny love note to someone, and it probably took a lot of time to write hat love note.

The next poem,”The New Suit,” by Nidia Sanabria De Romero, is a poem I can relate too. My connection with this poem is, sometimes I want to look perfect when I am in nice clothes, and I am super cacious of getting something on me.

I choose, Do You Carrot All For Me,” because of its writers craft. For example it has alliteration. The poem says,”You are a peach.” Also, it has imagery because it said she had a turnip nose and a reddish face. That’s why,” Do You Carrot All For Me,” is a clear winner.

  21. I think the meaning of “New Suit” is better because it is really funny and he tells about all the things your not supposed to do to ruin your suit.

A connection I can make is when ever I see a show or a movie about a office the worker’s hate it when they get a tiny bit of dirt on there suit’s

I saw that he used alliteration an example is striped suit. Another example terrific tie and another writer’s craft is rhyme scheme (abcd).

  23. “The New Suit” is more important to me because there are more rimes and I feel happier when I read it. A connection I made is T-S. I have had a party and wore something that I did not want to get anything on. Two writers crafts this poem has is alliteration and onomatopoeia. The alliteration is Striped suit. The onomatopoeia is dribbles. That is why I vote “The New Suit”. -Mary

  25. “The New Suit,” has more meaning than,”Do you carrot all for me?” because it is saying that nothing will be perfect all the time. In the poem it was saying a person had the perfect suit. He tried to keep it perfect, but the next year he will be waring not a perfect suit.
I can make a connection with,”Do you carrot all for me.” In the poem, it has different vegetables replaces the words, so my connection is that I have to eat vegetables. I do not like it!
“The New Suit,” has better writers craft. It has imagery when it talks about what the suit looks like. It also had alliteration when it said,”Striped Suit.” This poem is the winner.

I can make a connection in “New Suit” because my mom has taken me to the store to get a suit even though I don’t want to.
I chose the poem “ Do You Carrot all for Me,” by Anonymous because it is entertaining how the author turns the words into fruits and vegetables. The author is spelling them wrong, but it is very funny how the words are not real words. That is why I chose the poem “Do You Carrot all for Me.” Asher

  27. I chose “Do you carrot all for me?” because it is so wacky and weird. “Do you carrot all for me?” has a more important meaning because marring is more important then trying not to spill something on your new suit.

I found good poet’s craft in “Do you carrot all for me?” The metaphor was “You are a peach.” Another was “And your radish face.” I just know that “Do you carrot all for me?” will win.

I can make a connection to “Do you carrot all for me?” because I have a lot of great puns.
