  1. The poem that means more to me is "Casey at Bat" because I play baseball and so does Casey. Also there is a rhyme scheme of AABB, and there are couplets such as "A straggling few got up to go, leaving there the rest with that hope that springs eternal, within the human breast."

  2. The poem,”Mother To Son,” by Langston Hughes, has a more important meaning to me. The meaning is to always keep trying and never give up.

The next poem,”Casey At The Bat,” by Ernest Lawrence Thayer, has a connection with me. The connection is Casey plays baseball and loves it. My connection with Casey is I play baseball and love it too.

I choose the poem,”Casey At The Bat,” because I like the writer's craft. For example ,I like the rhyme scheme AABB. Also, I like imagery when it said the,”leather-covered sphere came hurtling through the air. The poem’s were close but I think,”Casey At The Bat,” won.

  3. The meaning of “Casey at the Bat,” is more important to me. It is because you can pull a lesson out of this. Casey wasn’t ready to hit it, but he had to. It shows that even in bad situation you can be sad, but Jesus would rather you be glad, that you get to come to a baseball game.

I can make a connection to “Casey at the Bat,” because I stuck out of a game, I was mad. He was mad at the end, and so was I! This shows me that in many games when you strike out you are mad!

I enjoy onamonapias. Like BAM, CRASH, SMACK, CLICK, SPLASH, and BANG! There are many more but those are some. The poem, “Casey at the Bat,” has an onomatopoeia of blow. (Casey’s blow). -Maggie Kate #6

  4. “Casey at the Bats Meaning is more important to me because it is not to get to confident about yourself.
One connection, I can make with this poem, is when I am playing a sport and I get to confident about myself.
I enjoy “Casey At The Bat’s” Writers craft more. For example, I really like the rhyme scheme AABB… I also like the imagery “Then when the writhing pitcher ground the ball into his hip.” That is why I chose this poem. -Bryan

  5. In the poem “Mother to Son,” by Langston Hughes, a writer’s craft that I like is the personification because almost every line has writer’s craft. For example, lines 3,4,5,6 and 7 “It’s had tacks in it, And splinters, And boards torn up, And places with no caret on the floor-Bare.”
In the poem “Casey at the Bat,” by Ernest Lawrence Thayer, I can make a connection because last summer I went to a camp where we played a lot of baseball all day.
I chose “Casey at the Bat” because the meaning is more important to me because it reminds me how fun it is to play baseball even if you strike out lots of times

  6. I think,"Casey at the Bat," is more important because I think it shows more detail, and I think you could really visualize the story and you know like the feelings that the people have in the poem.
I can make a personal connection when I am on the basketball court and I miss my shots and everyone is like,"no," so I feel like I can make a connection there.
I think this poem has a lot of alliteration because for example,"A sneer curled Casey's lips."

  7. I chose,”Casey At The Bat,”by Ernest Lawrence Thayer because I can relate to that like when I got fouled out in basketball once just like casey when he gets striked out in baseball .I think mother to sons meaning is more powerful because it's telling people to never give up but i would rather pick ,”Casey At The Bat,”I like casey at the bats writers craft more because I love rhyming after rhyming which is basically rhyme scheme. The rhyme scheme in casey at the bat is AABB and there is also a couplet because that’s the order of the rhyme scheme this poem is a definite winner.

  8. I chose “Casey at the Bat” because I like the baseball theme way more than the “mother to son.” and a connection to Casey is I used to play baseball also the mood of the story is probably guilt or relatable. There’s a rhyme scheme of AABB. “Casey at the Bat is the winner.

  9. “Casey at the Bat,” has more meaning to me than,”Mother to Son,” because it teaches you a lesson that the best isn’t always the best. That is why Mudville lost in the poem, but part of the reason is that Casey was over confident. The poem told me that I shouldn’t be over confident but to not be worried sick.
A connection I can make with,”Casey at the Bat,” is that I like baseball (the poem is about a baseball game). I like to watch and play baseball. That was one of the main reasons I liked the poem.
I also thought,”Casey at the Bat,” had better writers craft. It had the rhyme scheme of AABB. It had onomatopoeia when it said,”If only Casey could get a whack at that.” “Casey at the Bat,” should definitely be the winner.

  10. I like “Mother to Son,s” Meaning better than casey at the bat because she just uses strong words in “Casey At The Bat”I don’t like it because. I don't like baseball and the meaning I just don't like reading about a person getting struck out. Mother the son is good because she sounds like she is actually telling her son something.

A connection I can make with Mother to son is that my mother does this sometimes to me but not a lot. And a connection I can make is that I see people every day like her. I know how she feels.

In “Mother To Son” I like the repetition that the poet used because Its at the beginning and the end. She tells to her son life for me “ain't been no crystal air”.

  11. The first poem, “Casey at the Bat,” is about a crowd in a baseball game who has no hope but when Casey comes up to bat, they cheer very loudly, but when Casey strikes out, the whole town is so sad. The emotion is happy because Casey is at bat but also sad because he strikes out.

The second poem, “Mother to Son,” is about a mother telling her son that life is sometimes very hard and depressing, but you have to move on. The emotion is sad because the way that the mother is saying it makes it sound like her life has been hard.

I have to choose “Casey at the Bat” because “Mother to Son” is so sad. I think “Mother to Son” has a more important meaning, though. The meaning of “Mother to Son” is that life will be hard but you need to get over it. My connection is to “Casey at the Bat.” It is that I love to go to and watch baseball games. I enjoy “Casey at the Bat’s” writers craft more. The couplet is “same” and “game.” The other couplet is “roar” and “shore.”

  12. The poem “Mother to son” by Langston Hughes means that you should never give up. A connection I can make is that I don’t give up too. I enjoyed the repetition in the poem.

My favorite poem was “Mother to son” because it was so meaningful.

  13. The first poem, “Mother to Son,” by Langston Hughes, has a good meaning that is very uplifting and motivating. One connection I can make with this poem is that, life can also be hard and ruff for me too. It also can be hard for you at times (Obviously). I like the repetition in this poem when it says, “Life for me ain’t been no crystal stair.”
The second poem, “Casey at the Bat,” by Ernest Lawrence Thayer, has a delightful meaning that is very funny. One connection I can make with this poem is that I also enjoy baseball! Just like Casey does. One example of writer’s craft is when he used a couplet with the words, “Hip and lip.”
I had to pick “Mother to Son because its meaning was a lot more special, and I think my connection will relate to others as well. I think this poem will inspire readers to go through the hard times in life.

  14. I chose “Casey at the Bat.” The meaning of the poem is to say good game to the opponent don’t get super mad that you struck out in baseball or in any other sport. Don’t be a sore loser just be a good sport.

One personil connection I can make is that it is ok to strike out in baseball or any sport but the connection is I have struck out before in baseball. It would be very frustrating to strike out for the win though I have not done that though.

One writer's craft from the poem is onomatopoeia it was “and the crowd cheered.”

  15. The first poem,”Casey At The Bat,” means more to me because I play baseball and so does Casey. A connection that I can make is that once I was in a game winning opportunity. I like Casey at the bat because it has a rhyme every line. Is had repetition of saying bat and Casey. The rhyme scheme is AABBCC

The second poem,”Mother To Son,” means less to me because it is about a mother saying to her son that there life is hard for them. My connection is that I have been in a sirios talk about something in my life I have gotten through. I like Casey at the bats more because It has a lot of rhymes and repetition. The rhyme scheme is for “mother to son” is ABCD.

I pick as my winner,”Casey At The Bat,”because it has a rhyme every line. The rhyme scheme is AABBCC. It also has repetition such as bat and casey. This poem is the winner.

  16. I chose, “Mother to Son,” by Langston Hughes, because I feel like it has a better lesson, like, “Life for me ain’t been no crystal stair.” and “Don’t fall now- For I’se still climbing.”

A connection I can make with this poem is... Say I let a ball pass while I’m goalie in soccer. One of my parents will cheer me on and tell me it’s okay, or to keep trying.

It also has a lot of poet’s craft. Like, repetition for example: “Life for me ain’t been no crystal stair.” The poem also has imagery, like “ It’s had tacks in it, and splinters, and boards all torn up, and places were there are no carpets on the floor-bare.”

  17. “Mother to Son,” had more meaning to me because it tells the story of a mother talking to her son about not turning back and not going back to slavery and staying free. Also, “Casey at the Bat,” had no meaning to me at all because it was only about this Casey being so good and ending up him striking out and being a real baby and crying all about it.
I can make a personal connection to “Mother to Son,” when my mom told me to hold on to something special and to always remember it.I can make a personal connection to “Casey at the Bat,” when I hit the ball and was on third to score the game winning run when my friend struck out.
    3) The poet's craft that had the best to me was “Mother to Son,” because it used great repetition when it said And, And, And, and great imagery when it put a picture in my mind of loose floor boards, hidden walls, and when it said don’t sit on the steps don’t turn back.Overall I choose the poem, “ Mother to Son,” instead of “Casey at the Bat.”

  18. I think “Mother To Son,” by Langston Hughes, has more meaning because its about life. It talks about how life has never been easy, but you just keep on living. In the poem it says “I just keep climbing.” I think that means you just have to keep powering through and eventually everything will be ok.

I can make a connection to “Casey At The Bat,” by Ernest Lawrence Thayer ,because I've been in a situation where i’m overconfident or someone else is overconfident. Sometimes when I play basketball my team is overconfident, and sometimes it can be hard because when your overconfident your not always right.

I chose “Casey At The Bat,” by Ernest Lawrence Thayer, because I like the story better, and It has better writers craft. “Casey At The Bat” has a rhyme scheme of AABBCC and so on… It uses personification such as “When Cooney died at second.” Cooney didn’t actually die.
This poem also uses alliteration like “Casey closed.” I think this poem should definitely win!

  19. I think “Mother To Son” means a lot more to me because when I broke my arm it was a hard time to get through and my mom helped me a lot. My mom told me that she had sprained and dislocated her leg before, and it hurt really bad. Then she said that my grandmother helped her get through her injuries in the same way that she was helping me get through my injury. That is why “Mother To Son” meant a lot more to me.

I can make a personal connection to “Casey At The Bat” because I have done something where I missed the game winning shot. It made me feel like Casey did because I could have cried and flooded the whole school with my tears. Now i get how Casey felt when he missed that last hit. That is why I made a personal connection with “Casey At The Bat.”

I like the poet’s craft in “Mother To Son” better because it has so much of it. I like the repetition in the poem when it says and all of the time. I also like the metaphor in it when it says, “Life for me ain’t been no crystal stair.” Finally I like the country accent in the poem when is says “ain’t” and when it says words like “landin’s” with no -g at the end.

  20. I think” Mother to Son” has more of a meaning because it says that life is not very easy and there will be some hard times. But you need to push through raff times and easy times. This is why I think “Mother to Son” has a better meaning.
I can make a personal connection with,”Mother to Son,”because my mom always tells me that life can be a real pain in the neck but you always have try your best. This is my personal connection with” Mother to Son.”
I choose”Mother to Son”, I like how the author used repetition for example,”Life ain’t a crystal chair.” I also like how the author also has a rhyme sceme for example AABCC e.t.c. This is why I choose this poem.

  21. I think that ‘’Mother to Son’’ has more meaning because the dad is spending time with his son telling him what to get ready for. He is also warning him to get ready for some hard times.

I can relate more to ‘’Casey at the Bat’’ because Casey has a lot of people on her back. I relate to that because in basketball if I make a bad play then I will get taken out by my coach.

I chose ‘’Casey at the Bat’’ because she was not worried if she messed up she just went for it. I just go for shots to and sometimes they go in but sometimes they don’t. The writer's craft I liked the most was the onomatopoeia. For example, sneer and blow.

  22. I can make a connection with “Casey at the Bat,” by Ernest Lawrence Thayer. I've been really good at something and people cheered for me and I started losing. They kept cheering for me and then the other guy beat me and everyone was stunned that I had lost the game.

I can make a connection with “Mother to Son,” by Langston Hughes, because when my life was getting rough, my dad sat me down and practically said himself,”Life ain't gonna be no crystal stair” to me and I really learned a lot from those words.

For the winner, I choose “Mother to Son”, by Langston Hughes. I think this because it this poem really could teach someone. I liked how the author used very descriptive imagery when describing the stair of life(If that makes sense). That is why I choose “Mother to Son.”

  23. “Mother to Son” because the mother tells the boy life is not easy it is not easy for anyone. Life is like a glass slipper it is easy to break or hurt. Life is hard it can be fun but not all the time. I made a connection by I think the same way as the mom it is not that fun but it can be fun. I like that the mom is steeping up for the little boy. That is why I like this poem.

“Casey at the Bat “by Maya Angelou is a good poem I like baseball and baseball is fun but it is not fun when one of the best or the best player is playing you. It was 2 to 4 and the other team was winning it was Casey turn and the other team was scared there was someone on base one and two they thought that Casey was hitting a homerun to win the game there were two strikes and the last pitch he mist the other team won he was crying on the field when it was raining.

I think the winner is Casey at the bat because It is very emotional and funny they were so scared and Casey mist the ball and that was funny to me.

  24. “Mother To Son” has an important meaning to me. The mother is writing this poem just for her son and taking her time out of her day and writing this poem instead of doing whatever she wanted to do.

I can make a connection with “Casey at bat.”I used to be apart of a baseball team and I could never hit the ball unless I had a tee, and when I went to baseball camp I stunk because I played tee ball.

My pick is “Casey At Bat” because I could make a good connection and I liked the imagery and the onomatopoeia (whoosh).

  25. I think ”Mother To Son,” by Langston Hughes, has more meaningful. Because it is a heart touching poem because it is a mother and son talking about that the mom does not have it so easy.
I think ” Casey At The Bat,”by Ernest Lawrence Thayer ,is the most relatable because I play baseball and my team loses a bunch. We also have some players that aren’t really good at baseball.
I choose ”Casey At The Bat” because I like the alliteration of “ the score stood.”It also has a rhyme scheme of AABB.

  26. The poem I chose was,” Mother To Son,” by Langston Hughes is about a mom telling her son that life has it’s bumps and curves, so she will be here for him. I liked the part when the mother helped her kid. The mood is truthful because the mother is being completely honest about life will be like, but she is also saying that she is there for him.

I made a connection when the mother helped her kid, because my parents both help me all the time. For example, when I mess up something in soccer or basketball or I need help with something they are always there.

I liked the part when it had repetition when it said,” Life ain’t been no crystal stairs.” It said that twice in the poem, in the end and in the beginning. It also had very clear imagery when it said,”It’s had tacks in it, And splinters, And boards torn up.”

  27. I like the meaning of, “Do you carrot all for me?” because it is more important to me. It is all so lovie dovie. I like the poem meaning because it is funny the bunnies are getting married. They also replace words for food.

I can make a connection with, “The New Suit,” because whenever I wear fancy clothes my mom says, “Don’t ruin them!” When I wear good clothes people tell me that too! It shows me to not waste pretty clothes.

I like metaphors. They tell you it is something, not like something. For example. “You are a peach.” My winner is, “Do you carrot all for me?”-Maggie Kate #6
