Poetry Madness: Elite 8, Game 2!

Now that you have read through all of the poems and chosen a winner to advance to the Elite 8, the pressure has mounted. Read the winners of Game 2 and Game 4.

Choose your winner based on the following criteria:
  • Which poem's meaning is more important to you?
  • What personal connection can you make?
  • Which poet's craft do you enjoy more? Be sure to give examples.
    • Poet's craft can include: repetition, imagery, personification, rhyme, alliteration, couplets, onomatopoeia, simile/metaphor, etc

Make sure your answer is detailed and explains the three bullet points.

Here is an example of proficient writing:

Mother to Son is a more important poem because it has a deeper meaning. A mother is telling her son to never give up in life even when it gets hard.
I can make a connection to Mother to Son because sometimes I want to give up, and my mom always comforts me.
I enjoy the repetition of the metaphor, “Life for me ain't been no crystal stair.”
I choose Mother to Son as the winner.

  1. It was a very hard choice, but in the end I chose THE FALLING STAR. I chose the falling star because it had a deeper meaning in my opinion. It had a deeper meaning to me because it was a little bit more descriptive.

I made 2 connections with this poem. One of them is I love to look at the sky at night and watch for shooting stars and my other connection is that sometimes I will find thins and be like that is too beautiful and amazing to be kept so I should just leave it there instead of bringing it home and keeping it.

The poet's craft I liked was the couplets and rhyme scheme, for example,"Too burning and too quick to hold, too lovely to be bought or sold." One more poet's craft I liked was the alliteration. For example,"I Saw a Star Slide down the Sky.

That is why I chose The Falling Star.

  2. I chose The Falling Star because it has very good meaning how a star can make someone really happy, and I like how it talks about wishes, and stuff like that.

My connection with The Fallen Star is that I also like to make wishes when I see falling stars, and I also like to watch the stars.

I like the personification in The Falling Star because I like when it says "I saw a star fall down the sky." That is why I chose The Falling Star.

  3. I think The Falling star is better because it uses couplets. For example, it says,
"Too burning and too quick too hold,
Too lovely to be bought or sold," I can make a connection to The Falling star because I also wish sometimes I could look at things for more than a second. Lastly I chose The Falling Star as the winner because it had a deeper meaning. That is why I chose the Falling Star.

  5. I think The Falling Star has more meaning to me because it is very touching to my heart about how it can't be sold or bought.
My connection is that I think that same way about love, it can't be bought or sold either.
So I choose The Falling Star.

The winning poem is The Falling Star. It is the winning poem because it has a deeper meaning to me. It is all about luck and beauty because the star is beautiful and you can wish upon it. I have wished upon a star once and my wish came true. I like it's rhyme scheme to. It is AABBCC. That is why I think the Falling Star is the winning poem.

  7. I choose The Falling Star as the winner because it had more meaning to me. I think it is beautiful that this person sees the shooting star in a way that nobody else does. The connection made with The Falling Star was when you like something but everyone else likes another, vote for what you like not everyone else. I enjoyed this one more because of the couplets. For example, "I saw a star slide down the sky,
Blinding the north as it went by."

  8. The Falling Star should win because it's about how you can't buy or sell a falling star, but you can make wishes on it then it disappears.

My connection is when I saw a shooting star and wished on it with my brother.

I liked the AABBCC rhyme scheme a lot because it had a good flow to it.

  9. I loved both of these poems, but if I had to choose one I would pick The Falling Star. I thought it had a deeper meaning, and I liked how the author used couplets. I can make a connection to this poem because I love watching for falling stars, and I have always wanted to see one. The author of this poem was very descriptive and I could picture a falling star in my head. That is why I chose The Falling Star.

  10. I liked both poems but I had to chose The Falling Star because it had more meaning to me. It had more meaning to because it really explained how the star was really beautiful and how it was a once and a lifetime chance to see.

I can make a connection with The Falling Star when I saw a meteor shower. It was one of the most coolest and most beautiful things I have ever seen.

Some poets craft I liked about the poem was how it said "I saw a star slide down the sky." And,"To lovely to be bought or sold."

That is why I chose The Falling Star as the winner.

  14. I liked The Falling Star because I liked the personification and alliteration the author used when he said," I saw a star slide down the sky."

Another reason I liked it was it give a good message saying that some things you should just live in the moment and not take pictures.

I can make a connection to The Falling Star because I know what it is like to live in the moment.

This is why I choose The Falling Star.

  15. I choose The Falling Star as the winner because I thought it was more meaningful and stuck with me more then Who has Seen the Wind.

The connection I made with The Falling Star was, wishes. The star in my opinion resembled wishes because I spend so much time on hoping and wishing. For example, I through coins into the lake, blow out birthday candles, and wish on stars. That is my connection with The Falling Star.

In the poem I loved how they said to beautiful to be bought or sold. It reminds me of slavery. I liked how it only has one stanza, it was short and sweet. It kind of reminds me of personification when Sara Teasdale wrote to lovely to be bought or sold because slaves are bought and sold. The falling star is very beautiful. That is why I choose the Falling Star.

  16. Between Who has Seen the Wind? ans The Falling Star, I like Who has Seen the Wind? the best because the poem is about a interesting subject, and it had a good rhythm, and rhyme scheme (ABCB ABCB).

I have made a connection with this poem. My connection is that I have always thought the same way about wind, and I think it is cool to feel it passing through, even though you can't see it.

I also liked how the poem uses the repetition of the phrase, "Who has seen the Wind?". The poem also uses personification by saying "But when the trees bow down their heads,", which is my favorite part of the whole poem.

That is why I chose Who has Seen the Wind? as the winner.

  17. Between Who Has Seen The Wind and The Falling Star I think Who Has Seen The Wind should win because it has more meaning to me in so many reasons.
A connection is that I have also have wanted to see the wind But I know it is there because all of the trees move.
A poet's craft I enjoy more is repetition and rhyme scheme. For example, the rhyme scheme is ABCB. The repition is "Who has seen the wind"
I choose Who Has Seen The Wind as the winner.

  19. The Falling star is easier to understand.Someone is saying that a star is too fast and that that star is only go to wish on.

I can make a connection to Falling star because when I was little I wished on a falling star

I liked the couplets ,"sky and by."

I choose Falling star as the winner.

  20. The poem which had more meaning to me is The Falling Star because I have always wanted to see a falling star shoot across the sky.

My connection to The Falling Star is that I like to learn about space.

The writer's craft I liked most is Who Has Seen the Wind because it uses quatrain. For example, it uses the rhyme scheme ABCB and it is the same for the next stanza.

I chose The Falling Star as the overall winner.

  21. This is a very tough decision, but sense I can only choose one poem I will have to go with the falling star, because it has a good meaning. For an example it teaches you that you have to hold onto things when they come to you.

The connection I made with is that I might not hold onto things when they come , and then I wanted to take that chance that I had.

There was some writers craft in the who has seen the wind ,but there was more of a meaning in the falling star.

There was alliteration example:I saw a star slide down the sky,
there are couplets: To burning and to quick to HOLD.
Too lovely to be bought or SOLD.

That is why I choose the Falling Star.

  22. Who Has Seen the Wind has more meaning to me because I think it's about only god sees the wind.
I can make a connection to Who Has Seen the Wind because only god can see the wind and that is true.
I like the poet's craft in Who Has Seen the Wind more. The rhyme scheme was. A B C B.

  23. I choose Who Has Seen the Wind? as the winner because it has a good meaning and that is that no one has seen the wind. I have a connection and that is that I has not seen the wind. There are no couplets. The rhyme scheme is ABCD.

  24. It was tight but I think that the falling star wins.
It means more to me because it tells me that the falling star can be anything to you that you think is priceless.
My connection is my family they are just like that falling star they are priceless to me.
I enjoy how the poet uses couplets for the poem. I also liked the rhyme scheme AABBCC
I choose the falling star to win

  25. I voted for them both in the first round, but if I had to choose I would choose The Falling Star because it has a deeper meaning to me and that is that when you have a dream never give up on it.

The connection that I can make is that sometimes I have a dream and I just let it go and have forgotten about it.

I liked how it used the metaphor "Blinding the north as it went by," meaning that the star was very bright. That's why I chose The Falling Star.

  26. I choose the poem, The Falling Star as the winner because it has a deeper meaning for it. It's really about sometimes you only have one chance to do things. I like to play basketball and Soccer in those sports once you shot you don't have another shot. I like the alliteration for "star slide". That is why I chose The Falling Star.

  27. I think the poem The Falling Star meant more to me because the meaning was deeper than the other poem's. It tells you that you

I can make a connection to The Falling Star because I love
    watching falling stars.

I like the writer's craft in The Falling Star better than the other poem's writer's craft. For instance, the author used alliteration when she said "I SAW a STAR SLIDE down the sky". That is why I think The Falling Star won.

  28. I choose Who Has Seen the Wind as the winner of Elite Eight game 2, because it has some personification in it. For example, "But when the leaves hang trembling the wind is passing through," the leaves cannot tremble. Another example is, "But when the trees bow down their heads," is great personification. Another reason Who Has Seen the Wind is superior is the rhyme scheme, ABAB, not only that but Christina Rossetti had to have a good rhyming word for the personification that would rhyme with it's rhyming word in the couplet above. There isn't much alliteration in Who Has Seen the Wind but I could find, Neither you nor I," This is why I think Who Has Seen the wind is superior to Falling Star.

  29. I like The Falling Star better than Who Has Seen the Wind. It has a deeper meaning to me because it is talking about one of the wonderful things in life that come and go so suddenly. While Who Has Seen the Wind is talking about something that is there, but is invisible. The Falling Star makes me have a happy dreamy feeling. I also like The Falling Star because the author uses the rhyme scheme AABBCC.

  30. Out of two very good poems I choose... The Falling Star, because it has deeper meaning than Who has Seen the Wind. For example it says that you can't just see something amazing and forget about it.

The connection I made with The falling Star is that I have to hold on to things as they go by.

The writer's craft in The Falling Star is rhyme scheme aabbaa, and there were couplets.

That I think that The Falling Star is the winner.

I can make a connection to the boy/girl because I can take stuff for granted all the time. Also, it is a poem that could happen in real life.

I liked The Falling Star because the author used three couplets. Also it used the rhyme scheme AABBCC. It also used personification for the star. This is why I chose The Falling Star as the winner.

  32. I choose The Falling Star because it's about a star that is to fast to hold and its very pretty but no one can have it.

I also like the repetition of too also the ryhme scheme is AABBCC.

  36. This is a very tough decision because I like both, but if I had to pick one it would be The falling star. It has a good meaning, and it teaches you to hold on when things are on their way to you. The connection I made for this is that I think to myself that I need to hold on when things are coming my way. There was some writers craft in the Who has seen the wind. But there was more meaning to The Falling Star. And it also tells me that People need to follow there dreams. That is why I picked The Falling Star.

  37. I think The Falling Star is the winner because it is talking about a star that is falling from the sky ,and I like to look at the sky when I go to sleep.
