Now that you have read through all of the poems and chosen a winner to advance to the Elite 8, the pressure has mounted. Read the winners of Game 1 and Game 3.
In Round 2, you need to choose your winner based on the following criteria:
- Which poem's meaning is more important to you?
- What personal connection can you make?
- Which poet's craft do you enjoy more? Be sure to give examples.
- Poet's craft can include: repetition, imagery, personification, rhyme, alliteration, couplets, onomatopoeia, simile/metaphor, etc.
I choose Mother to Son, because it has a lot of meaning to me. It tells me When life is not perfect you make it the best you can. It makes a connection to me when I have a lot to think about. It also uses metaphors such as "life for me ain't been no crystal stair". That is why I choose mother to son.
ReplyDeleteI think they both have good meaning but Casey at the Bat is better because it has AABB as a rhyme scheme. Even though I'm for Casey at the Bat, I think Mother to Son had a deeper meaning while Casey at the Bat was just a silly story. Also I think the couplets went good with the story. I may like both, and it was a hard pick, but I chose Casey at the bat because it has a moral. Not many poems have morals at that topped it off.
ReplyDeleteMother to son teaches you a lesson
DeleteMother to Son has a deeper meaning because. It's about a mom telling her son about all she's been through and how life wasn't always easy.
ReplyDeleteI can relate to Mother to Son. Because both of my parents have worked hard and most of the time life was hard for them, but they never gave up.
I like the poet's craft in Mother to Son. Because they used old timey words. For example in one of the sentences the mother says. Life ain't been no crystal stair.
I think that the winner should be Casey at Bat because the meaning means more to me because it tells me that the big and strong guy is not the best athlete.
ReplyDeleteI can make a connection because I have had been losing in a game and I missed the winning shot.
I liked the rhyming in it and that it had a lot of rhymes. For example for just the last two stanzas the rhyme scheme would have been AABBCCDD and I think that that is a cool pattern. That's why I chose Casey at bat.
I liked Casey at the Bat. I liked it because it meant to always try your best. That is a really good thing to learn at a young age. I made a personal connection with Casey. Sometimes I don't always try my best because I think it will be easy. I liked how the writer used the rhyme scheme AABB... This is why I liked Casey at the Bat.
ReplyDeleteI choose Mother to Son as the winner because it's meaning is about to never give up. That is similar to swimming because you can't give up in swimming you have to push through all of it. it also has good repetition on "life for me ain't been no crystal stair."That is why I choose Mother to Son.
ReplyDeleteI choose Mother To Son, as the winner because it has deeper meaning of the mom telling her son or daughter how life is hard and it will always be that way. I know that life is hard because i'm small and its harder to do normal things. I also noticed how the author used a metaphor when the mother says "Life ain't been no crystal stair," she is telling him or her that life is hard.
ReplyDeleteI liked Casey at the Bat better because you should always try your best always and never assume you will always get it right. I made a personal connection with Casey because I try my best always, but I sometimes think I always get it, but sometimes I don't. I liked how every two lines it was a couplet.
ReplyDeleteThe winner is Mother to Son. Think the meaning is important because it is saying life is rough sometimes. My connection is that I have had some rough times in my life but I have gotten over it.I like the metaphors there is for example,"Life for me ain't been no crystal stair."That is why I choose Mother to Son as the winner.
ReplyDeleteI think, Mother to Son, should win game one of elite eight. Because it has a deeper meaning to me more than, Casey at Bat. Because it uses metaphors. For example life for me ain't been no crystal stair. Also the poet used repetition. For example life for me ain't been no crystal stair. That is why I choose, Mother to Son.
ReplyDeleteCasey at the Bat won against Mother to Son because I thought it had a deeper meaning, and a lot more detail. I also liked it because Casey at the Bat had poet's craft. For example, it had a rhyme scheme,[AABB]. I also had a connection to the poem because I enjoy baseball. The reason I really enjoyed that poem is because it had a lesson in the poem. It was basically telling me that even if you have won in other games it doesn't mean you'll win in all of them. This is why Casey at the Bat won against Mother to Son.
ReplyDeleteThe poem I like better is Casey at the Bat, because it is funny and and it has deeper meaning, also I like the repetition. That is why I like Casey at the Bat better.
ReplyDeleteThe most important poem in my opinion is Mother to Son because it talks about what life would be like back then in the old days. It also talked about what is life. My personal connection is that my mom is saying every day, "Don't go into the dark and go into the light." I really enjoyed reading Mother to Son because it tells me how to be kind to one another and enjoy my life.
ReplyDeleteMother to Son is a more important poem to me because it has a deeper meaning, and because it is about not giving up.

I enjoy the repetition and the metaphor Life for me ain't been no crystal stair.
I choose Mother to Son as the winner.
I pick Mother to Son because the meaning is more important to me because it is telling you not to give up. I can connect because my mommy tells me never to give up. I also like the repetition of "life for me ain't been no crystal stair"
ReplyDeleteI think that the poem Mother to Son has a greater meaning than Casey at the Bat, because in Mother to Son, a mother is telling her son to not give up in life just because life is hard.
ReplyDeleteI can make a personal connection to Mother to Son, because I get advice from my mom a lot. I enjoy the poet's craft in Mother to Son more because the author used repetition when he said "life for me ain't been no crystal stair". That is why I thought Mother to Son won.
I think Mother to Son is the winner because the mother in the story is saying never to walk on wood without shoes on because you could get splinters. The meaning of the story is that the mother is saying to her son to protect himself in life. My mom makes me feel safe and wants to protect me too. I liked that it used metaphors like "Life ain't been no crystal stair." That is why I choose Mother to Son.
ReplyDeleteOut of Mother to Son and Casey at Bat, I like Mother to Son the most. It has a deep meaning. A mother is telling her son about her life, and to me, it means more than Casey at Bat that, though it teaches you that, if you are snobby and "let the ball pass you" the first few times, you might not make the third ball. I can connect to Mother to Son because my mom gives me really good advice, like in Mother to Son the mother gave to the boy. Finally, I like Mother to Son because the author uses metaphors. For example, in the poem, it says, "Life for me ain't been no crystal stair.". I choose Mother to Son as my favorite poem.
ReplyDeleteMother to Son has a very good meaning it is about how a slave is climbing up stairs and telling her son never look back. The connection I have with Mother to Son is when life can be hard in school or at home don't look back just keep moving forward. The poet's craft in Mother to Son is repetition for example life for me ain't no crystal stair.
ReplyDeleteCasey at the Bat the poet's craft in the poem is repetition strike. The meaning of Casey at the Bat is you might strike out but you may strike out but you just keep trying in life. The connection I made with Casey at the Bat is if I am playing basketball and I do not make the shot I just keep trying.
I think Mother to son is the winner because I has a very good meaning that is life is not good don't look back keep moving forward.
I liked both of those poems a lot, but if I had to choose one I would pick Mother To Son. I liked it because it had a deeper meaning, and I like how the author used metaphors. For example, "Life for me ain't been no crystal stair." I can connect to Mother To Son because my mom always gives me good advice.

It means to never give up when life is hard. I liked the metaphor, "Life for me ain't been no crystal stair." that's why I chose Mother to Son
ReplyDeleteI chose MOTHER TO SON over CASEY THE BAT because it had a deeper meaning and I enjoyed the writer's craft. I love how he described hard life as a crystal stair and he is writing all the metaphors that in the end, mean that she is telling her son to never give up. One writer's craft I saw was metaphors, for example she said," Life for me ain't been no crystal stair." One connection I can make with this poem is my mother gives me advice and in this poem his mother is giving advice to him. That is why I chose MOTHER TO SON.

Go Mother to Son!!!!!
Deleteyay Mother to Son!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
DeleteI think Mother to Son is the winner because it used repetition. For example,it says twice, life for me ain't been no crystal stair. I also liked it because I have a connection. That connection is my mom tries to encourage me as much as she can. Finally I liked the poem because the meaning of the poem is way deeper than someone missing a baseball and being a sore loser. That is why I chose, Mother to Son as the winner.
ReplyDeleteThe winning poem is Mother To Son because it had a deeper meaning to me then Casey At Bat. I meant more to me because I don't like Baseball. I is important to me because it tells about life and how life is hard. One personal connection with Mother To Son is my mom give me advice all the time. It has metaphors because the mom says the life is not a crystal stair. Casey At Bat has now rhyme and it's also more of a story then a poem.
ReplyDeleteI choose MOTHER TO SON because it had a better meaning. It used poet's craft like metaphors. For example, "Life for me ain't been no crystal stair."Also repetition of that same line. I noticed some alliteration like "Don't you set down on the steps." Even though I am not a son, my mom still has given me advise. This is why I chose MOTHER TO SON as the winner.
ReplyDeleteLife for me ain't been no crystal stair:)
DeleteMe neither:)
DeleteThat is true Ellie.
DeleteMother to Son was very meaningful, I think it teaches you a lesson. It makes me feel safe and protected when I read this amazing poem. It was very beautiful.
ReplyDeleteCasey at Bat is very true the way I see it. Casey needs to learn how to be a good sport in my opinion. But it is also that he doesn't give up and he has very many supporters. Casey at but was also very reasonable for a choice.
I choose Mother to Son as the winner because it was very meaningful to me. I love how they used the metaphor,
"Life for me ain't been no crystal stair." It will always be a beautiful poem. I also loved Casey at Bat but I love Mother to son a little lot more.
The poem that had more meaning to me was Mother to Son because it teaches you a good lesson that life does not always go the way you want. I can make a personal connecting when my mom once told me life is not fair, when my sister got more of something I got and that told me a lesson. Some poets craft I repetition. The poem said "Life for me ain't been no crystal stair" at the beginning and the end of the poem.
ReplyDeleteI pick Mother to Son because it has more meaning to me and it is how a mother is talking with her son to keep going in life and never give up but just to keep going and don't give up hope. That is why I pick Mother to Son.
ReplyDeleteI chose Casey at Bat because it was funny . The reason that is funny is that it tells a story about a baseball player named Casey who struck out in a weird way. I have a connection with this because when I tried to steal in baseball I didn't know there was a guy on second base, so I got out and we lost the game. Finally The poems craft I like the most I like the most is it's metaphors . For example when I said It rumbled over the mountaintops . I think That is a great metaphor. This is why I like Casey at the Bat
ReplyDeleteI think Mother To Son is the winner. It is more meaningful to me because it tells me a story. A connection is that my mother gives me advice, and tells stories about her life too. Some writers craft I like more is repetition and the rhyme scheme. For example, some repetition is "Life for me ain't been no crystal stair." and the rhyme scheme is ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRST.
ReplyDeleteI think Mother To Son should be the winner.
The poem that meant more to me was Mother to Son because I have a mother that gives me advice.

The poem that I enjoyed more was Casey at Bat because it uses alliteration like " Ten thousand" and " thousand tongues."
I chose Casey at Bat because it told a story and a lesson to be a good sport when you lose.
I want Mother to Son because it gives a great message. That message is never give up.The connection I made was tests can be really hard sometimes, but I never give up. Another reason I liked Mother to Son was the author used a metaphor when she/he said" Life for me ain't been no crystal stair." Mother to Son is a clear winner.
ReplyDeleteThe connection I made with Casey at the bat was I play softball instead of baseball and I know how it feels to strike out when everyone is counting on you to hit the ball. I liked the couplets such as "He signaled to the pitcher, and once more the spheroid flew;
ReplyDeleteBut Casey still ignored it, and the umpire said, "Strike two!"
In Mother to Son, the connection I made with it was my mom tells me her stories from her life and tells me how to learn from it. I liked how the author used metaphors to say that she was climbing up stairs such as "And places with no carpet on the floor-
Bare."
I enjoyed Mother to Son better because the moral stuck out to me more than Casey at the Bat.
I liked Casey at Bat a lot, but I liked Mother to son the best. I think that it had a deeper meaning in life, because it teaches you to keep persevering, and never give up. I also liked it better because it has a good rhythm, and good poet's craft. For example, the poet uses a metaphor by saying, "Life for me ain't been no crystal stair,". It also uses the same sentence at the end, which gives the poem some repetition. I also liked how it used some alliteration, like "Boy, don't you turn Back". That is why I think Mother to son is the winner of the first round
ReplyDeleteMy favorite poem was Mother to Son because there was a strong meaning, for an example the mother was talking to her son about what might happen in life, and that there might be somethings that don't go your way in life, so you will have to ignore it and just go with the flow.
ReplyDeleteMy connection with Mother to Son is that my mom talks with me about what might happen when I am older and all alone in the world.
I noticed metaphors like Life ain't been no crystal stair. That is why I chose Mother To Son.
