Poetry Madness: Game 4!

Read Game 4 poems, If and Who Has Seen the Wind. Answer each question below. Remember to explain WHY you chose the winner based on poet's craft (rhyme, line breaks, punctuation, simile/metaphor, word choice, repetition) AND your personal connection to the meaning. Don't forget to write with M.I.N.T.S.!

Your post needs to include the following:
1. What is the meaning of the first poem? (Summarize in one sentence)

2. What is the meaning of the second poem? (Summarize in one sentence)

3. Based on the criteria, which poem did you choose and WHY?

***Please tell me everything you think, but use your best writing.

Here is an example of proficient writing:

The Eagle is about an eagle flying over the sea and close to the sun. Then he is watching the mountain and swoops down like a lightning bolt to catch his prey.

The second poem, Casey at Bat, is about a boy whose baseball team is losing, but there are two people on base. Casey gets two strikes, and the crowd is very upset. Finally, Casey strikes out, and the crowd is outraged.

For the winner, I chose The Eagle. I chose it because it had a deeper meaning and understanding for me. I also liked how used a rhyme scheme of AAABBB. Also, the author used a simile comparing the eagle to a thunderbolt, "He watches from his mountain walls, And like a thunderbolt he falls." That is why I choose The Eagle.

The first poem,If-,is about a father who is telling his son about how to be a man. most every line starts with the word if.

Who has seen the wind is about how know one has seen the wind but when the leaves blow, the wind is passing by.

I think the winning poem is Who has seen the wind because it is short and simple. It is a very good poem.

I think the winning poem is Who Has Seen The Wind. I think it is the winning poem because If doesn't make a lot of sense and I also think the other poem is a lot better than If. Who Has Seen The Wind also has a metaphor. The sentence "but when the trees bow down their heads" is a metaphor because the top of the trees is like the head.

    2. "But when the trees bow down their heads" is personification, not a metaphor.

  3. The first poem, Who has Seen the Wind?, is about even though we can not see the wind, The wind is there when we see things happen because of the wind.

The second poem, If-, is about how if you are able to make many good decisions in life, life will become a reward.

I think Who has Seen the Wind? is the winner because it had a great rhyme scheme: ABABACAC, and it used some personification by saying: "When the bow down their heads,". That is why I think Who has Seen the Wind? won

  4. The first poem, Who has seen the wind, is about how no one can see the wind but you can feel it especially when the trees bow down, and that is when you know that the wind us there.

If is about a dad who is telling his boy if he does all these things like "don't look too good or talk too wise" and "neither friends nor foes can hurt you" he is saying that he will be a man no matter what.

I chose IF because it had a deeper meaning and it used a good rhythm like in all the stanzas the rhythm was AAAABCBC and it gave the poem a good beat. I like how the author didn't say it was a man talking to his son until the very end. One more thing I liked about it was the repitition because in the beginning of every line it was either if, or, or and. That is why I chose IF.

  5. The first poem I read was called If. I think it is about believing in yourself, never giving up, and not letting other people doubt you.

The second poem I read was called Who Has Seen The Wind. It is about how you can't see wind, but you can feel it, and see how it affects everything around you.

I chose If as my winner because it gave my confidence in myself. I also liked the unique rhyme scheme.

  7. The first poem, Who Has Seen the Wind?, is about two boys/girls asking "Who has seen the wind?" They say they can only see the wind when the trees sway in the wing and when they bow down to them.
The second poem, If~, is about a father telling his son to never give up, help others, to be brave, and lots more. And the father says, "If you do all these things, my son, you will be a man!"
I think I like If~ better because the father is telling the son how to be a man and to be courageous and it had more meaning to me. I also liked If~ more because it was long and had some rhymes, not a lot, also the rhyme scheme was ABCDEFGHIJA, and that makes it special.

  8. Who has seen the wind is about a narrator who is telling the reader that no one has seen the wind, but when nature "bows before the wind," we know that it is there.

The second poem, If-, is about a parent telling his or her son that if he does all the things on the poem, he will become a man in the future.

I think the winner is If- because if I was that little boy, I would want my mother/father to say that to me. I would use that information to grow on. For the first paragraph, the rhyme scheme was AAABCDCD.

  9. The first poem, If, is about a man talking to someone, telling them about his adventures. If that someone has done all of those, it is his son.

The second poem, Who has seen the wind, is about someone telling about when the wind passes by, we can't see it, but we can feel its cool breeze run across our face.

I chose Who has seen the Wind as the winner because it has more meaning to me. I also like the personification. For example, "When the trees bow down." This is why I chose Who has seen the wind.

  10. Who Has Seen the Wind is about how you can't see the wind but when bushes and trees shake you can tell it is going by.

If- is about a man telling his son when he becomes grown up to ignore people if they are mean to you and be patient. It also talks about how you should never be nervous.

I chose If as the winner because the poet must've put a lot of thought and time into it. I also like how it teaches tons of virtues.

  11. Who has Seen the Wind is about the wind blowing through the trees and leaves. How none have seen it. But you know it is there when it moves the leaves.

If... is about like in my opinion doubting yourself because basily every sentence starts with If. It was very detailed.

I liked both poems I would choose both as the winners but since we have to choose both I choose If as the winner because I felt that it was more meaningful even though I liked Who has seen the Wind just as much. They repeated the word If a lot. I choose If because it was very well detailed but kind of hard to understand. On the other hand... Who has Seen the Wind was easier to understand but was not as detailed in my opinion.

  12. The first poem, Who Has Seen the Wind?, is about about someone stating it is impossible to see the wind.

The second poem, If, is about someone who is not to manley, so this other guy is saying if you can do this you will be more popular.

I chose Who Has Seen the Wind?. I chose Who Has Seen the Wind because it has a deeper meaning they If. In the poem Who Has Seen the Wind, it has personification. For example, it says, "But when the trees bow down their heads, the wind it passing by." In the poem it also has alliteration. For example, it says, "Neither I nor you:"

  13. The first poem I read , If , is about a parent talking to his or her son .The parent tells the boy that if someone or something that don't be angry back. Don't show the hatred.

The second poem read ,Who Has Seen the Wind? , is a person asking someone . Who has seen the wind ? Both of the have never seen the wind. So the person tells the other person facts to how to know when the wind is near.

My favorite poem is Who Has Seen the Wind? It is because it has a great rhyme scheme of AbcdAEf . It also has great alliteration. I love when the does clues to when the person tells the other person how seen the when like when the leaves hang trembling and when the trees bow down to there heads. Those are also metaphors . That is why I choose the winner which is Who Has Seen the Wind. Ps wind is blowing , yeah.

  14. The first poem, Who has seen the wind is about what happens when the wind passes by, for an example the wind is passing through when the leaves on the trees are swaying back and forth. Also the wind is passing by when the trees bow down their heads.

The second poem, If is about if you can do things that you don't usually do.

My favorite is who has seen the wind, because there is Personification, for an example (the trees bow their heads down) is a personification. Also there is alliteration, for an example (Neither you nor you) is alliteration, because Neither and nor make it alliteration because they both start with the letter N. Lastly there is repetition, for an example ( who has seen the wind, neither you nor I, and the wind is passing) are all repetition. Finally there are 2 stanzas.

  22. If is about not worrying about what other people think about you because that does not matter. The only thing that matters is what you think about yourself. Also to try new things.

Who Has Seen the Wind is about the wind would only pass through when trees were out of the way. Also how nobody could see the wind.

I chose Who Has Seen the Wind as my favorite because it has personification when it says that the trees bow down. I also chose it because in the rhyme scheme it copies the rhyme scheme on the second and fourth lines on both stanzas.

  30. Who Has Seen the Wind is about someone "looking" for the wind, and saying that neither you nor himself has seen it.

If- is about someone telling someone else what it takes to be a man, telling them that they must not lose their temper, be maen, brag, boast, and, even if they did something, or achieved something, amazing, they still must not make a big deal out of themselves.

My favorite poem is If-. I like it because someone is giving advice that is quite wise. ANother reason I like the poem If- is because the author repeats the title a lot- a total of 11 times! One of my favorite lines in the poem is

"If you can keep your head when all about you
"Are losing theirs and blaming it on you"
I choose If- as my favorite poem.
