Poetry Madness: Game 3!

Read Game 3 poems, The Eagle and Casey at Bat . Answer each question below. Remember to explain WHY you chose the winner based on poet's craft (rhyme, line breaks, punctuation, simile/metaphor, word choice, repetition) AND your personal connection to the meaning. Don't forget to write with M.I.N.T.S.!

Your post needs to include the following:
1. What is the meaning of the first poem? (Summarize in one sentence)

2. What is the meaning of the second poem? (Summarize in one sentence)

3. Based on the criteria, which poem did you choose and WHY?

***Please tell me everything you think, but use your best writing.

Here is an example of proficient writing:

The first poem, Roger The Dog, is about a dog who is very lazy and won't get up. He uses all of his strength to eat food, so  this dog is not the healthy type.

The second poem, The Falling Star, is about a boy who spots a shooting star falling through the sky and explains that it is priceless, memorable, and to be forever gone out of his life.

I think that the winner is the poem, The Falling Star. The reason I chose this poem is because it has great imagery, like when the woman stated,"Blinding the north as it went by". Another reason I chose this poem is the author uses the rhyme scheme: AA BB CC. This makes the poem fun to read and gives it a rhythm.

  1. The Eagle is about a eagle who catches fish and flies and what he does.
Casey at the bat is about a baseball player named casey and how he's super good and they're playing a game and casey gets up two bat and everyone thinks he gonna whack it out of the park but he strikes out and loses the game.
I picked the eagle as the winner because it was just really good but its also hard to explain.

  2. The first poem, Casey at Bat, is about a man who everyone thinks is unstoppable, but while he is risking the game. He doesn't even acknowledge the first two pitches, and then when everyone thought they knew he would smash it out of the park, he strikes out. What I liked about this story is that it had a good rhyme scheme and even a moral to the story.
The second poem, the Eagle, is about a eagle watching over a sea for fish and diving into the sea. This story had a unique and fantastic rhyme scheme, AAABBB.
In my opinion, the Eagle is the best. It has a great metaphor, "And like a thunderbolt he falls" is a perfect metaphor for saying he flies very fast towards the ocean.

  4. The first poem, The Eagle, is about a eagle who lives on a mountain, and watches, waiting, and then dives!

The second poem, Casey at the Bat, is about when a baseball team is down, two to four, in the 9th inning, and they have two outs. They get people on third and second, and the "mighty" Casey is up, but he strikes out, and they lose the game.

My choice is The Eagle, because I like how the author made it seem like the eagle was watching over everything, and was just waiting for the time to strike. I also liked how the author used alliteration in the first line with the all the cs. That is why I chose The Eagle for the winner of game three.

The second poem, Casey At The Bat, was about Casey(a baseball player) was going to hit the winning or ting game hit but she struck out.

The second poem Casey at the bat, it is about a boy named Casey. There baseball team is down 2-4. It is his turn to bat. The pitcher throws the ball, and Casey wasn't even paying attention. The second pitch the same thing happened. The third pitch he tries and misses the whole croud was so mad.

I chose Casey at the Bat, because it is long and has more detail of what is happening in the poem. It also has 13 stanzas
The rhyme scheme was AA BB AA BB... I really though that was cool.

    1. Sometimes long is bad. Too much detail is bad, well, in my opinion. Poems are usually short and good that way.

  7. The first poem, The Eagle, is about an eagle that grasps a cliff with its talons, close to the sun, and then there is a storm when the eagle is in a mountain.

The second poem, Casey at Bat is about a famous baseball player named Casey that everybody adores that gets up to bat with two outs and Casey has two strikes, so when he bats he misses. From that I can tell that Casey is not a very good baseball player.

My favorite poem was, Casey at Bat because I like how the author used in the first three stanzas the rhyme scheme:AA BB CC DD EE DD, and that made the poem very unique. That is why I chose the poem, Casey at Bat.

  11. The first poem, The Eagle was about how an Eagle is basically. And how the Eagle lives.

The second poem, Casey at the bat was about this man named Casey that had to substitute for people that had died. The reason why the people picked him is because he was very strong and he was very tall. When the game started Casey was not paying attention because he knew that he would make the third strike. But he actually missed the shot and he got really mad.

I think that the second poem won, Casey at the bat because it had rhyme scheme and it was very detailed. It also had a moral of the poem the moral of the poem is you should do it now or never just like Casey did not try to hit the ball in the two other tries but when he did try to hit it he missed it. Those are some reasons why I think that Casey at the bat won.

The second poem,Casey at the Bat,is about a boy who is very famous for his baseball. He has made every home run he had tried for. But this time he thought he would make it but he did not.

I chose Casey at the Bat for my winner because I think it is a lot more interesting and fun to read. I also liked how it made the poem in to a short film! (It was so good!) I also liked how it used rhyme scheme, and how it was long but really good.

The second poem is about a baseball player named Casey who is very confident when he plays baseball, and when his fans cheer him on he is even more confident. But once he strikes out once is fans get mad at the empire. He then makes 2 more strikes and his out of the game.
My favorite poem is the second poem. I really liked how it had 6 linebreaks filled with amazing detail. And how the rhyme scheme was AA BB. 14. The first poem The Eagle is about a lonely and sad eagle who only has the waves and the sun to comfort him. All he can do is watch and fly.

The second poem is Casey At the Bat it is about a "great" hitter who everyone thinks will hit a home run to win, but he lets them down and strikes out because he wasn't paying attention. I infer that Casey is very disappointed in himself because he lost it for his team.

In my opinion the winner is the Eagle because it is sad but sweet. I can also infer that the eagle is very lonely out there by himself. I also love the rhyme scheme it is AAA BBB. That is why I like the Eagle the most.

  15. The Eagle, by Alfred Lord Tennyson, is about a eagle's flight with it's prey in his hands, describing what it is like to soar through the sky.

The poem, Casey at Bat, by Ernest Lawrence Thayer, is about a wonderful baseball player, who was playing at a game, and his team was losing, when he went up to bat, and purposely ignored the first 2 balls, but when he actually tried to get the third ball, he struck out.

My favorite poem was The Eagle because the author makes you feel like you are soaring through the sky, in the body of an eagle, but it isn't too silly. I also like the fun, but unique rhyme scheme "AAABBB." That is why I choose The Eagle as my favorite poem.

The second poem I read was called The Eagle. It is about an eagle. It is always watching over the sea ,looking for fish ,and trying to get something to eat.

I think the winner should be Casey At The Bat. Because in the middle it says,"It is the last inning,." So it made me want to keep wanting to read more because I wanted to see who won.

The second poem, Casey at the Bat, is about a baseball player who has all the pressure on him because it is the last inning and the last play of the game and now everyone in little towns away from Mudville are very happy but everyone in Mudville is very disappointed because Casey STRUCK OUT.

I chose The Eagle because it was very descriptive and it made me picture exactly what it looked like in my head. For example, when she said things like, "The wrinkled sea beneath him crawls" and "Ringed with the azure world, he stands" it just instantly painted a picture in my head and I could just picture myself looking at the eagle. I also liked the pattern AAA BBB because it made you feel the rhythm and she used a little bit of alliteration like Crag with Crooked hands and Lonely Lands.
