Poetry Madness: Game 3!

Read Game 3 poems, The Eagle and Casey at Bat . Answer each question below. Remember to explain WHY you chose the winner based on poet's craft (rhyme, line breaks, punctuation, simile/metaphor, word choice, repetition) AND your personal connection to the meaning. Don't forget to write with M.I.N.T.S.!

Your post needs to include the following:
1. What is the meaning of the first poem? (Summarize in one sentence)

2. What is the meaning of the second poem? (Summarize in one sentence)

3. Based on the criteria, which poem did you choose and WHY?

***Please tell me everything you think, but use your best writing.

Here is an example of proficient writing:

The first poem, Roger The Dog, is about a dog who is very lazy and won't get up. He uses all of his strength to eat food, so  this dog is not the healthy type.

The second poem, The Falling Star, is about a boy who spots a shooting star falling through the sky and explains that it is priceless, memorable, and to be forever gone out of his life.

I think that the winner is the poem, The Falling Star. The reason I chose this poem is because it has great imagery, like when the woman stated,"Blinding the north as it went by". Another reason I chose this poem is the author uses the rhyme scheme: AA BB CC. This makes the poem fun to read and gives it a rhythm.

  1. The meaning of the first poem, Casey at the Bat, is about a baseball team which is losing to the other team. Casey comes up to bat, the crowd is putting intense pressure on him. He waits until the last pitch, and then all his glory is gone when he strikes out.

The Eagle is about an Eagle who is looking over all the land, and when the sun rises, he falls as the King and his rule is over.

I liked The Eagle the best because it was short, and had imagery. For Example: When the author said "The wrinkled sea beneath him crawls; He watches from his mountain walls." It also had a rhyme scheme: AAA BBB.

  2. The first poem,The Eagle,is about an eagle and how he stands on a rock waiting for some pray and then he strikes like a thunder bolt.

The second poem,Casey at the Bat,is about a baseball team and how a boy named Casey is a great hitter and the fans want him up so they can win the baseball game. Then he strikes out where as you would expect him to hit a home run.

In my opinion I choose,The Eagle, because it had a great simile where it said,"And like a thunderbolt he falls. Also, there was a pattern in the poem that went AAA BBB.The poem really made me feel like I was actually watching the eagle swoop down and eat the prey.It described the eagle very well down to the last detail. That is why I chose,The Eagle,a the winner.

  3. The first poem,The Eagle, is about the way the eagle lives his life on mountain sides and watching everything from above. The second poem, Casey At The Bat, was about a really good baseball player and according to the umpire was struck out. In my opinion I think the poem The Eagle was the best because of the imagery. For example, I can see an eagle flying around inside a canyon when he says ," He watches from his mountain walls." I can also see a nest up high in a tree with eggs in it when he says,"The wrinkled sea beneath him crawls."

  5. The first poem, The Eagle, is about an eagle an who stalks his prey from a mountain and strikes quickly.

The second poem, Casey at Bat, is about a team that has two outs with a man on third and a man on second so they sent him up to bat but he kept on getting strikes so the fans started to yell then he struck out.

I vote for The Eagle because it had a good rhyme scheme: ABACCC. Also I liked the metaphor about how the eagle could dive as fast as a thunderbolt. And lastly the Imagery was really good I could actually see an eagle on a mountain swooping down like a thunderbolt. GO THE EAGLE!!!!!

Then he thinks, somewhere something happy is going on, but not for Casey because he has struck out.
I think the winner is,Casey at the Bat. The winner for me is The Eagle. It is short, but very interesting. The rhyme scheme (AAA, BBB) was cool. I like how he is like a mighty eagle up high on the mountain watching over the sea, and then he falls and he is no longer the mighty eagle.

The second poem, Casey at the Bat, is about a baseball player who thinks he is the best, but he strikes out.
I think the winner is the eagle because it is about an eagle waiting for his prey, and there prey is birds, and some people don't like birds because they go on their cars. the author use rhyme scheme for both of the poems. for example in The Eagle it says that hands and stands, and in Casey at the Bat it says day and play.
