Remember to explain WHY you chose the winner based on poet's craft (rhyme, line breaks, punctuation, simile/metaphor, word choice, repetition) AND your personal connection to the meaning. Don't forget to write with M.I.N.T.S.!

Your post needs to include the following:
1. What is the meaning of the first poem? (Summarize in one sentence)

2. What is the meaning of the second poem? (Summarize in one sentence)

3. Based on the criteria, which poem did you choose and WHY?

***Please tell me everything you think, but use your best writing.

Here is an example of profcient writing:

The first poem, Dust of Snow, is about a boy who is having a bad day until a crow lands on the tree above him, shakes the dust of snow on him, and gives his heart a change of mood.
The second poem, Mother to Son, is about a mother and a son. The mother had a rough life which she compared to a set of stairs that she had a rough time climbing. She told her son to not give up and keep moving forward when life gets hard.
I choose Mother to Son as the winner because it touched my heart and showed me that no matter if something is hard you should always move forward. Also, the author repeated lines to emphasixe the message. It is a great story because it teaches you to persevere. That is why I chose Mother to Son.

  1. Rodger the dog is about a lazy dog that has only a bit of strength. For example, he saves his strength for only to gobble and chomp. He also won't play and he hogs the fire.
The falling star is about a star that is to valuable and you should only wish on. It is also too quick and too burning to hold.
I liked the falling star a lot because it makes you feel happy and makes you feel like you should wish on a star sometimes.

  3. The first poem, Rodger The Dog, is about a dog who is very lazy and won't get up. He uses all of his strength to eat food, this dog is not the healthy type.

The second poem, The Falling Star, is about a person who saw a star, and it was beautiful. To pretty enough to be bought or sold. Then it was gone.

I choose Rodger The Dog, because it was more of a better understanding and it sounded well with the ryhming. It had more of a children tale than an older tale, that is why I liked it.

  8. The first poem, The Falling Star, is about a boy who spots a shooting star falling through the sky and explains that it is priceless and memorable and to be forevergone and out of his life.

The second poem, Roger the Dog, is about a dog who likes to sleep and likes to exercise. He works hard and hogs the fire bakes his head as if its a loaf of bread. roger the dog is very active.

My favorite poem was Roger the Dog. I liked how it rhymed and expained the daily life of a dog. I noticed that the dog does whatever the owner says and is very obedient. The dog is grateful and eats all of the food you put before him. I think Roger the dog has a good chance of winning Poetry Madness this year.

  9. The poem, Rodger the Dog, is about a very lazy dog that snores a lot. It says that "He works as hard as you could wish emptying his dinner dish" that shows me an image of a lazy fat dog eating a bowl of dog food. Any way I thought it was a great story.
The poem, The Falling Star, was about a burning star sliding across the night sky to fast to hold. When it said "too burning, too quick to hold" it showed a fast star scraping the night sky and lighting it up. I liked this poem because it showed great emotion.
I choose Rodger the Dog as my favirote because it had humor and laughter and entertanment. Although I liked The Falling Star, I thought Roger the Dog, was better. And that is my opinion.

The second poem I read,The Falling Star, was about a shooting star that was very fasinating. The person in the poem made a wish on it. This poem had imagery. For example you can almost see the star.
I choose Roger the Dog as the winner because it was funny and entertaining, whereas The Falling Star was not as funny, but had a great meaning. They were both great poems though.

  14. The first poem, Roger the Dog, is about what Roger the dog does everyday. The poem tells you about what a boys dog does. For example, the dog wheezes when he sleeps, he will not race, he will not romp. It really is just telling you what the dog does everyday.

The second poem, The Falling Star, is about falling star that she sees slide across the night that is only good to make wishes on.

  18. In The poem Roger the Dog, it gives you all the details. For example, it doesn't just say that roger was sitting next to the fire it said he was hogging the fire and was asleep, another example is that you can roll him over with your foot and he will not care. In the poem,The falling star,it acts like a little kid who has never seen a falling star(I like to call shooting stars falling stars)and it is just amazing. then when he thinks it is goes away and he will never see it again. I choose Roger the Dog because it reminded me how all the dogs in the whole family like to hog the fire. Also the writer has great rhyming skills.that is why i think Roger the Dog.

  19. The first poem, Falling Star, is about a shooting star falling across the night and someone describing how pretty it is.
The second poem, Roger the Dog, is about a lazy dog and the owner describing what he does all day.
I liked Falling Star the best because the author includes imagery so we can feel and see what's happening. Also, the author includes lot's of repetition, and that's what makes it easier to see what's happening.

I think that this poem was trying to explain the worst case possible of a lazy dog. The second poem , Falling Star, is about how amazing a falling star is and that it is so pretty that is is nit able to be held, bought, or sold. My favorite poem was , Roger the Dog, because of the imagery all through out the poem. I also like Roger the Dog because I see my dogs the same way!

The second poem is called ,Falling Star, it is about a boy who sees a star very briefly and makes a wish then he talks about how fast it went by and how it's gone forever.

I vote for Rogger the Dog because it has a good rhyme scheme and it has Imagery. For example "He hogs the fire and bakes his head

And the winner of round two is....... Roger the dog!!!!!! It is just so good. And it has writers craft. The poet made it have imagery of the dog really lazy and fat. Plus it has a rhyme scheme. It makes it a whole lot more kid friendly. I love I mean I love it. Thank you for that wonderful game of round two poetry madness.

In the poem, Roger the Dog, It is about a dog named Roger who is old and fat.Who just likes to sit by the fire and eat he is a very lazy dog.

The second poem, The Falling Star,is about a person who has a dream and he goes after it and he is so close and then he just falls. Then does not think he can get up and his dream is gone forever and he can not reach it.

I picked the poem, Roger the Dog, Because the poet Ted Hughes makes you feel like your right there and he gives you imagary when he says "He hogs the fire,he bakes his head as if it were a loaf of bread." It makes me feel like I am sitting right there on the couch with a cup of hot chocolate in my hand while im in my pajamas on a cold night watching my dog sit by the fire.

The second poem, Roger The Dog, was about lousy and lasy dog who just wanted to sleep. He didn't even get up if you roll him with your foot. It had a wonderful writing pattern of, AA,BB,CC,DD,EE,FF,GG,HH.
I chose Roger The Dog as the winner because it was very funnny. Also I liked the rhyming in it. In my opinion Roger The Dog was more enjoyable too. It was long so you got to read alot. Not only that but I could paint a visual picture in my ming of Roger.

The second poem,The Falling Star,is about a star that(in Sara Teasdale's words)slides across the sky the poem makes the star sound very valuable it also sounds very lucky to wish on the star before it is gone.

I chose The Falling Star.I chose that because I liked how the author used rhyme scheme.I also liked how the falling star was described. My favorite thing about the poem is the feeling and how special it sounds.

  34. Hey this is Bryce Callaway and we are about to play game two of poetry madness. First we have is, Roger the Dog. Roger the Dog, is about a person talking about a dog and what he does. This poem rhymes. Also, He describes the dog well. What happens in this poem is that This boy telling how he sleeps, eats, how he scratches, and it describes his head like a loaf of bread

Next is, The Falling Star, The falling is also a rhyming poem. It talks about a star coming down to earth and to god to be bought or sold. But it is a short poem. I like how it talks about the star though.

I think the real winner in this is, Roger the Dog, because i like dogs and I think the person explains it well. Also, It says what he does and he tell how the dog reacts back at him. My winner is, Roger the Dog.

  35. The first poem is called,Roger the Dog, It is about a very lazy dog who doesn't want to do anything. It rhymes and dose not want to do anything.I love in this poem that it just says He hogs the fire. he bakes his head.

The second poem is called,The Falling Star, it is about somebody who just saw a falling star and wish they could touch the falling star and thinks it is so lovely. But they know it is only for making a wish.

I choose Roger the Dog as the winner because I like the rhyme scheme and how it paints a mental movie in your head.I also like Roger the Dog a little bit more because I think it is a very cheerful story.

  36. The first poem, Roger The Dog, is about a dog who is hungry and wants to eat. when he wakes up he go's for a walk and he will not run or walk.
The secoend poem,The Falling Star, is about a shooting star saying you should wish on it and your wish might come true.
I think that I like the poem, Roger The Dog, more then, The Falling Star, because dogs are better than stars. I have one dog and they are the best. And that is my opinion of who wins.

  37. The first poem, Roger the Dog, is about characteristics of a dog and what he does. In the poem there are 9 couplets in the poem in each couplet there are two word in it that rhyme.

The second poem, The Falling Star, is about a person who sees a star and the person said that they saw a star sliding down the sky, that is was blinding the north, too burning and too hold, too lovely too be bought or sold.

I choose the poem Roger the Dog because I love way Mr. Hughes really desired what the dog did in the poem. I liked the way he used repetition and used imagery and painted a picture in my mind. Also, liked how each couplet had had a different rhyme A was ease and fleas, B was head and bread, C was dog and log, E was foot and put, F was exercise and eyes, G was romp and chomp, H was wish and dish, and I was deep and sleep. Lastly, I liked it because it was about a dog.
