Now that you have read through all of the poems and chosen a winner to advance to the Elite 8, the pressure has mounted. Read the winners of Game 1 and Game 3.
In Round 2, you need to choose your winner based on the following criteria:
- Which poem's meaning is more important to you?
- What personal connection can you make?
- Which poet's craft do you enjoy more? Be sure to give examples.
- Poet's craft can include the following:
- repetition, imagery, personification, rhyme, alliteration, couplets, onomatopoeia, simile/metaphor, etc.
The Mother to Son meaning is about how life is hard but you have to keep going. She says that life hasn't been a crystal stair case and that means that it is not perfect and that's it hard and can not be the best sometimes.

I think that Casey At Bat is more important. If you think you are good don't just purposely get two strikes. Then you only have one chance to hit it.

The poem Mother to Son has metaphors and repetition.
Mother to Son is more meaningful to me because it tells you what people's lives can be like and you can change that. I think that the most meaningful line in the poem is," life has had tacks and splinters. It has had boards torn up. Places with no carpet on the floor-Bare." The connection I am making is that I haven't had the best life either. I can't change that but I can change my future. As the Mother says in the poem, " Life for me ain't been no crystal stare." I can connect with that. I can also connect to where my Mom tells me all the things in her life and some are good and some are bad. I choose Mother to Son as the winner because it is more meaningful than Casey at Bat.

I like Casey At The Bat more because it is about a baseball game that everybody is happy about. There's two people on base and Casey is up at bat he watches one ball go by. STRIKE 1! He watches another one go by. STRIKE 2! But then the third ball is pitched... STRIKE 3! Casey swung and he missed everyone was sad about that loss.

ReplyDeleteI can connect to the child in the poem. I do a lot of sports, and everyday I don't want to go. All I want is to stay home, do my homework, and shower. Everyday of the week is hard for me, but my Mom always says, "You committed to this sport, and you need to work hard." In the poem, the mother says, "So, Boy, don't you turn back."
I enjoy the repetition saying, and, at the beginning majority of verses. An alliteration is, goin' down dark.
