Poetry Madness: Game 3

Read Game 3 poems, "The Eagle" and "Casey at the Bat." Then answer each question. Remember to explain WHY you chose the winner based on poet's craft (rhyme, line breaks, punctuation, simile/metaphor, word choice, repetition)and your personal connection to the meaning.

Your post needs to include the following:
1. What is the meaning of the first poem? (Summarize in one sentence)

2. What is the meaning of the second poem? (Summarize in one sentence)

3. Based on the criteria, which poem did you choose and WHY?

  1. The first poem, The Eagle, is about an eagle that lands on a tree above the see and swoops down like a thunderbolt.
    The second poem, Casey at the Bat, is about a kid who plays baseball and the Umpire only called strikes the fans yelled at him and Casey struck out.

    I like Casey at bat because he tried his best and that is all you need to be good.

    The second poem, Casey at the Bat, its about a boy who plays baseball and he strikes out.

    My favorite poem is The Eagle because its shorter and it's more detailed.

  3. The first poem, The Eagle, is about an eagle who is flying really high. In this poem there is a lot of rhymes and repetition.

    In the second poem, Casey at the Bat, is about a kid named Casey, who plays baseball. He really wants to hit the ball the third time but he misses instead, and strikes out. Casey and the bat had a lot of similes and metaphor

    My favorite poem was The Eagle because, it was shorter and simpler to read and understand. It also had very good repetition and rhymes.

  4. The first poem, The Eagle, by Alfred, Lord Tennyson. I think it is about Alfred, Lord and him seeing a eagle flying.

    The second poem, Casey at the Bat, by Ernest Lawrence Thayer. It is about a boy named Casey and he strikes out.

    In my opinion I think that the first poem should win. The Eagle by Alfred, Lord Tennyson. It is just using good criteria the way they are talking and using some words that we have never heard before. It used metaphors in every stanza. I like THE EAGLE!!!

  5. I think The Eagle is about an eagle soaring in the sky above water, and then he dives down in to the water to get some fish.

    Casey at the bat is about a violent baseball game when the have a player named Casey come be the batter, and he sticks out once then twice and he is angry at the pitcher he does he hit the ball no.

    In my opinion I think that THE EAGLE was the best I think that it was very nice and powerful, but my favorite part is at the end.

  6. The first poem, The Eagle, is about an eagle who is traveling all around the world, flying over all of these places, and is describing what it's like in all of those places.

    The second poem, Casey at the Bat, is about a boy who barley ever and is trying to finally get a strike.

    I chose the poem Casey at the bat because I like the way the author tries to rhyme mostly every word, uses similes, and the way the author describes Mudville.

    The second poem,Casey at the Bat,is about a boy named Casey that plays baseball that struck out.Casey at the Bat is by Ernest Lawrence Thayer.

    I like The Eagle the best because Alfred,Lord Tennyson made you feel like you were flying in the air with the Eagle. I also liked the the ryhmes by Alfred,Lord Tennyson.

    The other poem,Casey at the Bat, is about Casey up at bat and hits his lip.

    My favorite one is The Eagle because an eagle does all of that stuff and I like how the writer describes it.

  9. The first poem, The Eagle, is about a bird that is hunting for his prey. Then, a hunter comes near the mountain that the eagle is next to, and shoots down the bird. The author uses rhyme scheme at the end of each phrase throughout the poem, but he does not use any similes or repetition.
    The next poem, Casey at the Bat, is about a boy named Casey, who is playing on the fields. The umpire is yelling strikes that make the crown mad. The writer used some repetition and rhyme scheme.
    My favorite poem is, The Eagle, because it is breezy and calm instead of it being rough and mean.

    The poem, Casey at the Bat, is about a boy named Casey. Casey's baseball team is losing the game, and everybody wants Casey to go on bat. When Casey went up at bat, he tried to hit the ball,and then the ball hit his hip, and then it hit his lip.

    I vote for The Eagle because i like the way that it rhymes, and it think it makes more sense. I also like how it is shorter.

  11. The first poem, The Eagle, is about an eagle that is flying over the ocean and dives. It It rhymes on every line .
    finally gets its prey.
    The second poem, Casey at the Bat, is about Casey striking out 3 times, and what she is thinking and feeling why he is at bat.
    My favorite poem is, Casey at the Bat because I loved the internal thinking, and the rhymes.

  12. The first poem, The Eagle, is about a eagle up in the sky, who is holding on to it's nest. The eagle is going to fall into the sea that is below it, then the eagle looks up at the mountain walls and then suddenly falls.

    The second poem,Casey at the bat, is about a baseball team that was playing a big game and it was Casey's turn to bat and she strikked out.

    My favorite poem is Casey at the bat, because it is about determation and dont give up, but in this one it didn't go the way Casey wanted it to be. I liked how the ahthour ryemed the words together. I have a connection with Casey beacuse when ever I think I'm going to score a gole I sometimes dont.

    The second poem, Casey at Bat, is about a boy named Casey who's baseball team is losing, and it's Casey's turn to bat, but when he tries to hit the ball he hits his lip, and he got struck out of the round.

    My favorite poem is, The Eagle because I really like the way in the poem how the story rhymed, but it still made since. Also I really liked the way how at first the poem is like a person is seeing a eagle soaring in the sky, but then there is a problem that the eagle fell.

    The second poem, Casey at Bat, is about a boy who has all the pressure on him. He needs to get a home run to win the game. The bad thing is he strikes out and looses the game.

    I choose The Eagle because it has a lot o figurative language and a lot of similes! My connection with the eagle is he reminds me of a tiger how he lerks in the night and dives to get his prey

    The second poem, Casey at Bat is about a man that is not being represented well by his fans, for example his fans say mean things to him.

    I picked Casey at Bat, because it is long and is about a sport that I like. My connection to Casey at Bat is that when I play baseball I have a little pressure on me.

    My favorite poem is probably Casey At Bat. I liked it because it reminded me when I used to play baseball and got a lot of pressure from my coach.

  19. Casey At The Bat was about a baseball player named Casey. She was playing at a baseball game, but she struck out and lost the game. She was mad when she lost.

    The Eagle is about an eagle who grabbed on to a metal thing, but she fell like lightning.

    I liked Casey At The Bat more because it was really cool that the author got it to rhyme the entire two pages. I also liked it because I like to watch baseball.

    Poem two, Casey at the Bat, is about man named Casey who was playing Baseball and the crowed got really mad because Casey had two strikes, they thought that he'd get a third, but he got three strikes.

    My favorite was poem one, The Eagle, because when the writer was describing the eagle, it kind of sounded like me. Strong, bold, and fierce. I also like the rhyming and how short it was. The description was very strong and really stood out to me.

    The second poem, Casey at the Bat, is about a boy playing baseball, and he has to hit a good shot or his team will lose the game.

    I liked The Eagle better because it tells great detail about the world below the eagle. I also like it because I used to see a ton of eagles looking for prey at a lake I went to.

    The second poem, Casey at the Bat, is about a boy who makes three strikes from persuasion.

    I like Casey at the Bat, because it has a lot of details and is very precise about words, and I also thought it had really good writers craft and metaphors.

  26. I think that The Eagle is about an eagle looking for a fish to eat in the water and stands at the top of a mountain so he can see the fish and then he sees one and dives into the water to eat it.

    I think Casey at the Bat is about the Mudville nine losing the baseball game and then it is Casey's turn to bat and it is all up to him to win the game but he still does not win the game for them.

    I like The Eagle because it is exciting and it and it all rhymes the whole time.

  27. My first poem, The Eagle by, Alfred, Lord Tennyson is about a Eagle trying to find dinner. How the author told about the surroundings really make the story come to life.

    My second poem, Casey at bat by, Maya Angelou is about a boy who really wants to bat but knows he wont get picked. But he gets picked and after that Casey thought he could do anything.

    My favorite poem was Casey at bat, I liked Casey at bat the best because every last word rhymes. When you read the poem it sounds really well wroten and that the writer put a lot of thought in to it.

  28. The first poem, The Eagle, is about a person who falls down and has crooked hands and is by a land where no one is at, the person is crawling and is felling the wrinkled sea and looks at the mountains then falls like a thunderbolt.

    The second poem, Casey at the Bat, is about a girl who is playing baseball and when ever she steeps up to the plat to bat she always has a smile on her face, when she was batting she got one strike then two strike and then the whole time she was getting strikes because of the crowed yelling at the umpire and the people confusing her then the pitcher got ready then bam she got struck out.

    My favorite poem was the first one the, The Eagle, Because it rhymed better and it made me fell like I was in the story with the person and it had great details.

    Poem two is Casey at bat he wants to hit a home run but the crowd was very loud and Casey could not concentrate and he struck out.

    My favorite poem is The Eagle because it rhythms and i like it because it tells me he is trying to catch his pray.

  30. The first poem, The Eagle is about a person who see's a beautiful eagle on the mountain. Then all of a sudden the eagle falls of the mountain.

    The second poem, Casey at the bat is about a boy named Casey who is playing base ball, and there is a boy on third base and the other on second. The other team is up one point. If Casey hits a triple or a home run his team will win, but if he strikes out he loses for his team. Sadly he strikes out and his team loses.

    I think the winner should be Casey at the bat because the same thing happened to me in my soft ball game about two years ago. I also like how each stanza tells part of the story and the rhyme seem.

    The second poem, Casey at the Bat by Ernest Lawrence Thayer, is about a boy named Casey who plays baseball and the whole team counted on him to lead the team to victory, but Casey stroke out. It has a ABAB rhyme scheme.

    I liked Casey at the Bat the best. It told a better story to me. I loved the rhyming in it.
