Image result for bald eagle on a cragImage result for casey at bat

Read Game 3 poems, "The Eagle" and "Casey at Bat." Answer each question below. Remember to explain WHY you chose the winner based on poet's craft (rhyme, line breaks, punctuation, simile/metaphor, word choice, repetition) AND your personal connection to the meaning. Don't forget to write with M.I.N.T.S.!

Your post needs to include the following:
1. What is the meaning of the first poem? (Summarize in one sentence)

2. What is the meaning of the second poem? (Summarize in one sentence)

3. Based on the criteria, which poem did you choose and WHY?

***Please tell me everything you think, but use your best writing.

Here is an example of proficient writing:
The first poem, “Roger the Dog,” is about a dog that will not do anything all day. The only time he will put effort into anything is when he really wants to eat. I think this poem was written to entertain readers with a silly story about a lazy dog.

The second poem, “The Falling Star”, is about a girl who saw a falling star. She loved the star because it was so beautiful. You could never contain its beauty in any form unless you saw it yourself. It's one of a kind beauty reminds me that everyone is different, and they are beautiful in their own way.

I pick “The Falling Star” as the winner because of its beautiful message and the choice of wordage. I love the words and rhymes she used in this poem. I love when she said, “ Too lovely to be bought or sold” because that reminds me of a song called “Millionaire.” The song is about love and how can not be bought or sold. "The Falling Star" is definitely the winner!

  1. "The Eagle" is about an eagle soaring in the sky looking down at the sea and mountains. "Casey at the bat" is about casey a baseball superstar and for the first time he gets out and he can't stop practicing until he gets a hit and its funny little movie. I choose "Casey at the bat" because he got out for the first time and he's not giving up until he gets a hit.

  2. In the first poem "The Eagle," is about an eagle who is very lonely, and one day something hit him like a thunder bolt.

In the second poem "Casey at the Bat," is about a very famous baseball player, and then one day he can't hit the ball which makes him upset.

I think the winner is "Casey at the Bat" because it teaches you that you can't do everything you want it to do or something to do.

  3. “Casey At The Bat” was about a really big baseball player and Casey struck out.

“The Eagle” is about a eagle that is flying around.

I think the winner is “The Eagle the rhyme scheme is AAAB.

  4. The first poem “Casey at the bat,” is about a baseball player named Casey who is really good. Everyone comes to the games just to watch Casey. They all depend on him because he has never struck out. One game the score was 4 to 2 there was a guy on 2nd and a guy on 3rd base. It was up to Casey to win the game for them. The umpire called strike one, strike two, and the last pitch came in and Casey struck out. That was they end of the great Casey.

The second poem “The Eagle,” is about an eagle grabbing onto the clif high in the mountains, and he’s watching the sea as he swoops down in delight.

I think the winner is “Casey at the bat,” because it has a lot more details and is about baseball. But I still really like the poem “The Eagle,” but I think the first poem is better.

  5. The first book I read was “Casey at the bat “, it is about a man and how he is a great baseball player the one game he was playing and could not seem to hit the ball, and he is kicked off of the team.

The second poem I read was “The Eagle” it is about a Eagle and how it sits on a mountain top and watches for food in the water below.

I thick the poem “Casey at the bat” wins because of the riming and how it tells how he feels. I really think that it is the winner.

  6. The first poem, “Casey at Bat,” is about a baseball game when it is close to finishing. Casey comes to bat with one guy on second and third base with two outs. The game is 2-0. The other team is winning. When Casey underestimates the first two pitches (which were both strikes), he strikes out, and no one was very happy.

The second poem, “The Eagle,” is about how an Eagle lives his or her life.

I choose “Casey at Bat” the winner because the lesson in my opinion is that even famous people make mistakes and don’t underestimate. I like that the whole poem’s rhyme scheme was AABB. Plus, I saw a movie about it so I got persuaded because it has more detail. I think “Casey at Bat” is the winner by far in my opinion.

  7. The first poem,” The Eagle,” is about an eagle and what it is like to be an eagle it is giving examples by rhyming.

The second poem,” Casey at the Bat,” is about a baseball team who is down by two with 1 Inning left ,and the last person to bat is Casey and he builds his momentum from his teammates. He misses the ball on the third strike, and Casey is obsessed with girls.

“Casey at the Bat,” is my winner it uses rhymes and metaphors.

  8. The first poem I read was,“The Eagle.” It was about a eagle. It tells that the eagle is above a ocean in a mountain wall and no one is around him. At the end he flew away.

The second poem I read was, “Casey at the Bat.” It is about two baseball teams and the score is 2 to 4. The Mudville team was losing. Finally Caesy want up to bat. The first hit Casey just ignored. Same with the second hit. I think that he ignored the hits because he thought he was good enough for one hit. But on his third hit Casey struck out. Now he can’t hit a good hit again.

I think that the poem, “The Eagle” won. I like it because I liked the way it rhymed. The rhyme scheme was A A A B B B. I also liked it because of the wording. For example, “The wrinkled sea beneath his crawls; He watches from the mountain walls.”

  9. The first poem I read was, “The Eagle,’’ it is about an eagle who is lonely on a mountain. At the end of the poem it use a simile that said, “Like a thunderbolt he falls,” which I liked. I think the poem was written to entertain readers with a poem about an Eagle.

The second poem I read was, “Casey at The Bat,” it is about Casey’s team and how they had one more inning to win. The bases were loaded, and the team trusted Casey the win it for them. Casey just watched the ball because he thought he didn't need three changes. “Strike one,” the umpire called. Casey agan just sat there and watched the ball. “Strike two,” the umpire called. This time he knew he would hit a grand slam. Everyone was shocked Casey struck out.

In my opinion, “Casey at The Bat,” was better. I like how it was more descriptive. Also, I like the rhyme scheme. The rhyme scheme for “Casey at The Bat,” was AABB. I like that Casey did not win because he was just a show off. I think this poem showed that Casey’s team trusted him, but I think that trust is gone now.

  11. The poem ,” Casey at the Bat,” is about a baseball team that is down two to four in the last inning left to play. The team has really good player named Casey. He was the last one to bat for the team. Everyone thinks he is the best and better than the others, but when he comes up to bat at the end he gets struck out. I think he struck out because Casey thought he was going to hit it no matter what happened. When you get a little cocky because you think you are the best. You don’t ever just think that you’ll hit it because you are good. You have to believe in yourself and believe you will hit it. The rhyme scheme to the poem is AABB.

The poem ,”The Eagle,” is about an eagle who is on a crag or cliff. He is sitting close to the sun resting. Peering of the cliff. There is a sea beneath him. The sea is at the bottom of the cliff where the eagle is at. He falls of the cliff to soar through the sky. In the poem it said that he fell like a thunderbolt off the cliff. That sentence is a simile and that means he fell in a quick hard move. I think the rhyme scheme for this poem is AAA.

I think the poem ,” Casey at the Bat,” should win. I like how the poem almost teaches a lesson. The lesson is never just think you are going to do something well just because you are good at that thing. Believe in yourself and practice for that thing even if you are really good at it. I also think it should win because it can be an entertaining poem to hear.

  12. “Casey at Bat” is about a game of baseball. The game is 2-0 there is one inning left. 3rd and 2st are loaded Casey is at bat and he strikes out.
“The Eagle” is about how the eagle is very majestic and how is watching the land.
I like “Casey at bat” because it creates imagery. Like I can imagine the first guy at bat, nervous and hit it. Runs to first and the second guy to. Then Casey he is at the base strike 3 game over.

  13. “The Eagle” is about an eagle that “lives in the lonely lands” which I think is the west. Then the second line is about him catching a fish. I enjoy the rhyme scheme AAABBB.

“Casey at the Bat” is about a baseball player named Casey who is the best player on the team, and everyone wants to see him play. It also said the ladies that don’t know anything about baseball still come to see Casey play. Then at the end of the 9th the score is 4 to 0 the other team. The team is sure they will lose because of the lineup . two people get out. Now they are sure they will lose. The next two people get lucky and get to 2ed and 3erd Casey is finely up to bat. He is so confident in himself that he lets the first two balls go by. Then he strikes out!! Everyone goes home disappointed, but Casey is the most disappointed of them all. The similes and metaphors were also good.

I think the winner is “Casey at the Bat” because I think it would be harder to write, and I enjoyed it the most.

  14. The first poem I read was,”Casey at the Bat,” is about a baseball player named Casey. Who all the ladies like and thought was cool. The score stood 2 to 4. There are batters at second and third base. Casey goes up to bat and is fooling around. “Strike one” said the umpire. Casey makes the game go on. Here the pitch “Strike two” said the umpire. The third and final pitch “Strike three” Casey could not hit again. The In the first paragraph the rhyme scheme in AABB. There is repetition “ There was ease in Casey’s manner.” “There was pride in Casey’s bearing.”

    The second poem I read was,” The Eagle,” is about an eagle that has a nest on the a steep cliff. He can see the sea below him. The rhyme scheme was AAABBB. There was a simile” And like a thunderbolt he falls.” The metaphor was”He clasps the crag with crooked hands;

I think, “Casey at Bat,” wins because the author wrote it to entertain you and it entertained me. Thats is why I chose it.

  15. The first poem I read was,“Casey at the bat”, about a man named Casey who is very big and strong but he also likes to have a lot of attention. So he shows off at the bat because the pitcher is scared of him. But he also is very distracted, so he strikes out.

The second poem I read was,”The eagle”, about how eagles are unquek and how they survive in the wild.

I think the winner is ,”Casey at bat,” because the author uses rhyme scheme, for example
“ It looked extremely rocky for the Mudville nine that day, the score stood two to four with one inning left to play”.

  16. The first poem is “The Eagle.” This poem is about the mighty Eagle who roams the earth on lonely lands.

I enjoyed this poem because I have always been interested in Eagles ever since one came to my school. And they are the mascot for the united states of America.

The second, poem is “Casey at the Bat.” This poem is about a guy named Casey who is on a baseball team. And he has to get a home run to win the game. I enjoyed this poem because it had a lot of rhyme scheme.

I think the winner poem is “Casey at the Bat,” because I enjoy baseball and a lot of rhyme scheme.

  17. The first poem I read was “ Casey at Bat.” It is about a baseball team down by two points, and their best hitter is up to bat. Everybody thinks that he will hit it out of the park, but he strikes out. Everybody doesn’t like Casey any more. I think that this poem was written to tell a funny story about a funny baseball player up to bat.

The second poem I read was “ The Eagle.” I think that it is about an eagle who is really high up, and he is about to dive into the water to catch his prey. I think this poem was written to tell other people about how eagles catch their prey.

I think the winner is “Casey at Bat” because it has good rhyme scheme like AABBCC. Also it is really funny, and lastely it shows not to doubt other things.

  18. The first poem I read was, Casey at the Bat. This poem is about Casey a baseball player. And he is a ladies man. The team he is on was losing by two points. Then Casey was up to bat and he missed and got striked out.

The second poem I read was, The Eagle. The Eagle is about a eagle who was on a rock looking down on the world.

I think that the winner is, Casey at the Bat. The reason I feel that way is because I think,Casey at the Bat, is the most detailed and funny. I think that the author's purpose was to let the readers have a good read and a funny one! I think that the writer's craft is rhyme scheme.

  19. The Eagle” is about an Eagle flying and then flying down really quickly to catch his prey.

“Casey at the Bat” is about a baseball player who is really good and everybody is trusting him to win the game. But instead of wining he loses and everybody is sad.

The winner should be “ Casey at the Bat” because I could tell the person who worked on it worked hard. I also could tell he tried to make it funny.

  20. The first ‘Casey at the Bat’ is about a baseball game and Casey is the best player. Everyone comes to see Casey, and they have one inning left. It is Casey's turn to bat. Casey's strikes out, And gets knocked out. I like this poem because it was very entertaining.
‘The Eagle’ is about a eagle. The rhyme scheme is AAABBB. I like the alliteration in this poem.
My favorite poem is ‘Casey at Bat’. I like that it entertains you. The story was very funny. I like the metaphors in the poem, for example, the author says ‘So on that stricken multitude a deathlike silence sat’.

  21. The first poem I read, “Casey at the Bat,” is about a baseball player, Casey, whose team got two points. That is their Best ever, and at the people at the game did not like the team, so they left. When the people are leaving Casey gets a point. The people then get love Casey, so they are ready for Casey to get one more point, but Casey strikes out.

The next poem I read was “The Eagle.” It is about an eagle who gets on a rock sticking out at the water. The eagle dives in the water to catch some food. You can tell that it is an eagle if the poem was not called The Eagle. You can tell because they use the character traits of an eagle. Also the rhyme scheme is A, A, A.

I choose ”Casey at the Bat” as the winner because it is very detailed, and is a fun and entertaining story. It can also tell you not to be cocky because Casey was cocky when he struck out because he thought he did not have to try, but he did. The author also let you have a vision of Casey.

  22. The first poem I read was called “The Eagle.” It is about how an eagle will fly. It talks about him living in lonely lands, and his claws grab a cliff to stay up. The waves will hit the ocean shore, and he will watch from the mountain walls. Then he flies off the mountain into the bright blue sky.

The second poem I read was called “Casey at the Bat.” It’s about a man named Casey who is a town favorite! He is up to bat at a baseball game, and he strikes out! He gets frustrated because he lets Mudville down. It’s a really funny story about Casey. I liked how the ladies were obsessed over him. I really liked it!

I choose “Casey at the Bat” because it uses rhyme scheme. For example, the rhyme scheme for the first stanza is AABB. A connection I made was whenever I love to play baseball in my backyard, but I usually strike out! I love how he is a town favorite! It is a silly poem about Casey. He is a silly character, so I think this is DEFINITELY the winner!!!!!

  23. The first poem I read was “Casey at the Bat.” This poem is about Casey and his team playing baseball. They were losing by two points so far and they needed three to win. His teammates were on second and third base and casy needed to hit a home run. He ignored the first two pitches and the fans got mad at the umpire because he gave him two strikes. Then he missed and struck out and the fans were mad at him. The rhyme scheme is AABB.

The second poem I read was “The Eagle.” This poem is about an eagle that is looking at the water below him while he is hanging on a clif waiting. I think he is looking for fish to eat and that is why he falls. The rhyme scheme is, AAABBB.

In my opinion the winner is “The Eagle.” This is because it has new words that I learned. For example crag. It means a rugged cliff or rock face. Also it has similes. For example “And like a thunderbolt he falls.” I can relate to this when I am waiting for something and then it comes and I just try to get it as fast as I can. This is why I chose “The Eagle” to be the winner.

The second poem I read was “Casey at the Bat.” I liked how much detail it had in it. The rhyme scheme is AABB. I thought it was very entertaining. It is about a baseball player named Casey, who shows off when he is at bat. So he strikes out.

I chose “Casey at the Bat” for the winner. I thought it was entertaining, and detailed. It also uses a lot of rhyme scheme. And, I also chose it because it shows that everyone makes mistakes sometimes.

  25. The first poem, “The Eagle”, is about a eagle standing on a branch sticking out of a mountain, watching for fish below him, then he spots one and dives.

The second poem,”Casey at the Bat”,is about a baseball player, Casey, who is very good. But when he underestimates two throws and he misses the third, he is out of the game.

I like the poem,”The Eagle”, because it taught me new words like a crag. A crag is something like a branch sticking out of a cliff, mountain, or hill. This reminds me of Christmas because my sisters and I are waiting for my parents, then when they come, we take off into the den to open presents.

  26. The first poem, “Casey at the Bat,” is about a baseball game. The Mudville team is losing by two points, and there is only one inning left to play. But, after two people have gone, Casey comes to bat. The crowd is very excited now, but Casey gets two strikes. Finally, he hits the ball, but Mudville is very sad because it goes out. I think the purpose of the story is to entertain the reader about a confident baseball player.

The second poem, “The Eagle,” is about an eagle who is on a rock jutting up from the mountain side. Underneath him is the sea. He watches from the mountain, and then he flys away. I think the purpose of the poem is to entertain the readers about an eagle.

I think the winner is “The Eagle” because the author uses alliteration. For example it says “He clasps the crag with crooked hands.” Also, I like the similes in it such as “And like a thunderbolt he falls.” The author used rhyme scheme. It is AAA BBB. “The Eagle” is very entertaining and is definitely the winner.

  29. The first poem, “Casey At Bat”, is about this guy named Casey who has to get a hit to still be able to win. He is the best hitter on the team so everybody thought he could do it, but he was being cocky and let the first two pitches go. After that, he knew that he had to get a hit. When the pitcher threw the next pitch, he missed the ball, struck out, and let down the town.
The second poem, “The Eagle”, is about an eagle getting ready to hunt his prey.
I pick, “The Eagle”, as the winner because it used alliteration. For example, the first line was, “He clasps the crag with crooked hands”. Another reason why is because it used rhyme scheme. For example, the rhyme scheme was AAABBB. My last reason is because it uses similes. For example, one simile was, “ And like a thunderbolt he falls”.

  30. The first poem, “Casey at the Bat” is about a baseball team that is in the ninth inning. They had two people on base, and Casey comes up to bat. Then he doesn’t bother trying to hit the first pitch. Then he doesn’t bother hitting the second pitch. On the third pitch he was flexing and making sure that he was going to hit the ball. Then he swung and struck out!

The second poem, The Eagle is about an eagle the life of an eagle. It tells about how majestic the eagle is.

I choose “ Casey at the Bat” because it is very funny. For example, it is funny when he can’t hit the ball. Also it was funny when he gets ready for the third pitch and he flexes up and gets ready to hit the ball.

  31. The first poem I read was “Casey at the Bat.” The poem is about a famous baseball player named Casey. Casey is really good but at the end of the poem. He did not swing at the first and the second he swung at the and third missed the the ball.

The second poem I read was “The Eagle.” It is about an eagle who is hanging on cliff. The eagle sees its prey and charges like a thunderbolt. At first thought the eagle was going to drowned in the water.

I like the poem “Casey at the Bat” more. It made more sense to me, and I liked how he missed the ball by a mile. And the fact that the poem has more words.

  32. The first poem”The Eagle,” is about an eagle that is hanging on to the side of a cliff that is very close to the sun. The eagle is on the cliff because he is about to dive down and kill a fish.

The second poem”Casey at the Bat,”is about a boy named Casey. Casey is loved because of his looks and when he was up to bat he is so good that he thought he wouldn’t have to try. But when Casey strikes out twice everyone in the crowd started to get mad. He hit again and got out he was so devastated.

I choose “The Eagle,” because I feel like it has more meaning and I think that a lot of people can relate or at least I can. I can relate because sometimes you can feel like your on an edge and the only thing to do is to get back up.

  33. The fist poem, “The Eagle” is about a eagle and how he catches his prey. He catches his prey by sitting on a crag and watching. He looks through the sea for food. Then when he sees food, and he flies as fast as a thunderbolt toward the sea and too catch his prey. I like how the author uses an AAABBB rhyme scheme because you don’t see it that often. I also like how he uses alliteration at the start of the poem. It reminds me of how animals camouflage, and when they see their prey come by them, they pounce. I also like how the author compares the eagle too a thunderbolt when he sees food. That is what I think the poem, “The Eagle” is about.

The second poem, “Casey at the Bat” is about a baseball game where one team is winning and the other team is losing. The losing team is Mudville. Mudville has a great player named, Casey. It is in the ninth inning and their are two outs. Casey is in the hole which means if two people get hits he will bat. The two people get hits, so Casey gets to bat. Casey comes up to bat. He takes his time as everyone is watching him. He lets two strikes go by and the crowd gets angry. He then swings as hard as he can. He then… misses the ball!! Then their town has no more joy. That is what I think “Casey at the Bat” is about.

I pick, “Casey at the Bat” because I like when the author uses alliteration by saying Christian charity. I also like the AABB rhyme scheme that the author uses. A connection I have is when the Yankees superstar Aaron Judge comes up too bat everyone goes crazy, but he strikes out a lot. He is like Casey because he is expected to hit a home run. I liked how the author made the poem very funny. A connection I have is that one time my baseball team the Brewers were down by 6 we came back and we were down by one then one of our players struck out, and we lost. An other connection I have is when my team was up by 5 and then the other team got up by 2. We then tied up the game, and the bases were loaded. I came up to bat, and I hit a single too win the game. He also had a very big lead up to the end. I loved how he included a lot of detail in the poem. I also learned to never get down on someone like the town got down on Casey. If I was casey I would’ve kept practicing after I struck out, so I wouldn’t strike out again. That is why I picked, “Casey at the Bat.”

  34. The first poem, “Casey at Bat”, was about a town that loved Casey and traveled miles to see him. At the baseball game people came to see Casey even if they knew nothing about baseball. I think Casey was the star of the team, and everyone loved him. At the game it was 2-4 in the last inning and they did not let Casey go first, so Flynn and Blakey went before him. Then when it was Casey’s turn the pitcher threw it twice, and Casey did not bother then on the last hit Casey whiffed it, and the game was over. This story staes how you should not be super over confident. I think this poem was written to entertain readers with a funny story about a baseball player.

The second poem,”The Eagle”, was about a eagle that was spying for food from a crag on a mountain. The poem really describes where he is, and how it is harder for them than it is us because he has to stay perched on a mountain to find food and kill it, but for us we just to get a gun and shoot something think this poem was written to describe how a eagle hunts and spies for food.

I choose...”Casey at Bat”!!! I chose this one because it is pretty funny, and also it had a lot of rhyme scheme. Plus, I liked the rhyme scheme he chose. (I’m not going to say the whole thing because you got to sleep at one point) For example the last paragraph’s rhyme scheme was AABB. But their was not much alliteration. It was really funny so I picked “Casey at Bat”.

  35. The first poem, “Casey at the bat,” by Ernest Lawrence Thayer is about a baseball team from a town called Mudville. The team isn’t doing good, and the score is four to two. The towns people are putting all their faith in one bater, Casey. When Casey steps up to bat, and the pitcher throws the ball Casey says that the ball wasn’t his style. When Casey steps up to bat for the second time he ignores it again. When Casey steps up to bat again he starts to look at the pitcher in hate and when the pitcher throws the ball for the third time it begins to rain in Mudville because Casey struck out.
The second poem, “The Eagle,” by Alfred, Lord Tennyson is describing the animal (and America's National bird) the Eagle. In this poem the Eagle he stands on a shrub growing from the side of a steep, very high, cliff over the sea. The Author states he stand in a azure world. Azure means blue like a cloudless sky, so that makes me think he is high up and close to the sun. Line four is “The wrinkled sea beneath him crawls,” makes me think the author was trying to paint an image of power in the reader's mind. The mountain walls in line five could mean he is in a cave, or he could be on a very steep cliff that looks like a wall. “And like a thunderbolt he falls,” is (in my mind) the way a Eagle hunts. I also know that an Eagle can reach about eight miles per hour. I really like, “The Eagle,” by Alfred, Lord Tennyson.
For me the clear winner is “The Eagle,” by Alfred, Lord Tennyson. Because of how its poetic and has a pretty rhyme scheme. I found out the rhyme scheme. It is AAABBB. I also liked, “The Eagle,” because it rolled off your tongue and had something powerful to the words.

  36. Casey At Bat is about to teams facing each other in baseball, and the home team is not that great. This guy who's on the home team who everybody think is good. But he strikes out, so everybody is suprised. The home team got struck out.
The Eagle is about where he lives.

I like Casey At Bat better because it's so intense and exciting. It drags you into the story.
