Reflections on Hearts of Service Day

Dear students,

I had a wonderful time volunteering with you and your families at the Nashville Women's Rescue Mission. I learned a lot about myself as well as the importance of giving back to the community. Volunteering takes more than showing up for a few hours. It takes preparation, planning, action, and, now, reflecting. I want you to reflect on your time spent at the Nashville Rescue Mission. Please answer the following questions:

  • What was your role(s) at the Nashville Women's Rescue Mission? How did you contribute?
  • What was your favorite part(s) of our service project and WHY?
  • Name some connections you made during your time at the Nashville Women's Rescue Mission.
  • What is something new you learned from this experience? Be specific! Also, were you surprised by anything you saw or heard?

Please make sure you answered each bullet point before you publish your comment. Double check your comment for punctuation/spelling mistakes. Your comment must be at least 5 sentences.

I cannot wait to hear about your day.

You teacher,
Ms. B

  1. I thought that the Nashville rescue mission was a great time to help people that do not have homes and make more and more people happy and give help to the people at the rescue mission feel better and more safe. My job was to sweep the dorms and help clean beds. I felt great after I left because I helped people get to stay in a cleaner place. I have been to a room in the inn place at my church and I got to serve men that were out on the streets and men that don`t have homes. Now I realize that some people really are out on the streets and some people are very poor.

  2. My job at the NWRM was cleaning the beds,so that they were clean. My favorite part was seing the faces of the women who didn't have anything, but they were smiling! One connection I made was with the meals on weels. We are so blessed to have great things like toys and a warm bed whereas people who are less forchinate have so little. I learned to be grateful for a shelter. I also lerned that god loves us all the same.

  3. My role at the Nashville Women Rescue Mission was the dorms. In the dorms we cleaned beds, swept the floors, moped the floors and cleaned windows. My favorite part was when we got to mop the floors. It was my favorite because it was fun but hard. I can make a connection from going to the rescue mission. That connection is from the movie Radio the connection is helping. It's helping because it's making people having a better life. I learned from this expirience by being grateful that I even have a home, food, money, and even a T.V. We all need to be grateful for all we have and god's love for us.

  5. I thought it was very fun helping out at the Nashville Women's Rescue Mission. I thought it was cool being able to see how other people live. I contributed by cleaning peoples beds and the dorms they stayed in. My favorite part was handing out the cards before the people walked in. Some connections I made was that they slept on hard beds and when you live on the streets you are basically living on the ground which is rock solid. I was surprised that kids would or could stay there.I had alot of fun on Valentines day!!!

  6. When I went to the Nashville Women's Rescue Mission I had to clean the dorms. I have to clean my room, but I have never had to actually clean it like I had to there. Cleaning was fun some times. For example, the mopping was fun. But I did not like wiping down the beds because they had bloodstains and hairballs. When I went to the Nashville Women's Rescue Mission, I was surprised that people did not get to have their own rooms. Their about 7 rooms and about 15 people in each room. When I looked at most of the beds they had no stuff on them, but a couple of the beds had toys and bags on them. When I left the Nashville Women's Rescue Mission it felt good to know I helped them.

  7. I had a fun time at the Nashville Women's Rescue Misson. I learned that there is more to serving others than you would think. I cleaned up a lot of stuff off the floor and when I did that it reminded me of how lucky we are to have are houses and having family with you. My favorite part was at the end when we were leaving there was a lady that sad she was so thankful for us and she started going around and giving every body hugs.Something new I that they don't have a lot of freedom. For example, they have a schedule that they have to follow every single day of there life. That is my reflection on service day.

  8. My role at the Women's Nashville Rescue Mission was cleaning the dorms. My job was to clean the dorms by, washing windows, mopping floors, dusting, wiping the beds, and sweeping trash. My favorite part is when we got to mop the floors because we were swinging around are mops. I made a connection with the beds because I found wrappers on the bed and I sometimes have wrappers on my bed. I learned something knew that these people have no home and the people working here are willing to help them. Something that surprised me was that a person came in and before she said anything say us cleaning, and gave us a smile. That is what happend and what I did at The Women's Rescue Mission.

I have worked at Nashville Food Drive and many other places for people in need. I learned many things when i went to the Nashville rescue mission. I was surprised that Barbra was once a lady there. That is my reflection.

  11. When we went to the Nashville Rescue Mission my role was that I cleaned out the dorms. What I did in the dorm that I was in was I cleaned the windows and swept the floors. My favorite part at the rescue mission was getting to help out in the dorms because I got to have some time with my friends while helping clean the dorms. My connection was that I guessing that is like the Nashville food project. One thing that I learned was that helping out is nice to the people who don't have homes and sometimes can't clean if they are disabled or stuff like that and it helps them when you go do things like help the Women's Rescue Mission because maybe they can't clean after themselves.

  12. For Hearts Service Day, at the Women's Rescue Mission. We cleaned the beds, and windows. I was the one cleaning the windows. But my favorite part about going to the Women's Rescue Mission was cleaning because, I feel like I'm helping someone when I clean the windows, and the beds. That makes me feel good. When I went upstairs, I noticed there were a lot of beds. I thought there had to be a lot of homeless people at the Women's Rescue Mission. I learned that the homeless people can't afford to buy a car, or a house.

  19. My role at the Nashville Women's Rescue Mission was to serve the drinks in the dinning hall. My favorite part was seeing all the little kids that are so full of happiness and energy and seeing that they were not at all sad about their situation . The connection I made was remembering all the service projects I have done over the years at Oak Hill and seeing that this particular one has made the most impact. I learned to be thankful for all the blessings that you have and to be willing to give all that you have to help those that are less fortunate than us. I have learned to be thankful for my blessings and have been encouraged to help serve again.

  20. When we went to the Nashville Rescue Mission, I helped put the napkins and the rolls on the trays. I contributed by filling up the trays for everybody there. My favorite part was seeing every person's face light up when they saw us coming in to help them because it made me feel like I had done something good for the people there. One of the connections I made was that one woman acted just like my mom. Another connection I made was this woman who was very specific about which sandwich she got, I can be specific about things too. Most of the people there were connected with God in such a strong way that I learned that no matter where someone is, they still believe in God.

  22. I had a great time at the Nashville Women's Rescue Mission because even though they did not have enough money to buy the things we buy they were still smiling and greeting us like family. My roles at the Nashville Women's Rescue Mission were handing out the trays of food and taking their trays to be washed.I never knew what it was like smiling by helping them like I had heard about in some of the fourth grade messages, but I now know what it is like because when I helped them it brought a smile to my face even though I was not even trying to smile and it made me feel great. My favorite part was taking their trays when they were finished. My connection was that I had seen some people like and it made me sad it made me happy to be able to help them.I learned that it feels a lot better to give than it is to get. That is my reflection for our hearts of service project!

  24. My job at the Nashville Rescue Mission was handing out drinks. I liked it when I would hand drinks to them and they would have a smile and say thank you. I My connection was with my class because we were talking to each other and trying to make sure that people got food and drinks and handing out extra roles. Since I get food and a home I want other people to have food and a home like me. So I think giving food to the poor is a big favor in the world. I hope other people will do that to. I liked to work at the Nashville Rescue Mission and I hope that you will too!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  27. I had a wonderful experience at the Nashville Women's Rescue Mission. I learned that you need to think about what you have and that you are really blessed because some people don't have that many things. My job was to give people the soup we made and also start a conversation with the women. I met this little boy named Alexis. He was about five years old and wore pink shoes. I gave some soup to him and asked him if he was having a great Valentines day. Right when he was leaving, he came up to me and gave me a hug and told me thanks for all I did. I felt so happy and I wish I could see him again. My connection is that we all had a great time while we were there. Something new that I learned was that there are a lot of mothers that are poor who have kids that need a mom who is not working and trying to get money all the time. I think that by talking to the kids and playing with them can help a whole lot. I saw a women who had 2 children and was really struggling to get one of them to calm down because he was a baby. She was also trying to get the other one some food. I went over and got the food for her and her children. I had a great time at the rescue mission and hope that I could go again and help some more.

My favorite part was serving the food and seeing all the smiles also I loved handing out the valentine's day cards and seeing how happy they were when they read the cards. I made some connections by handing out rolls with a new friend in the class. I never have talked to that person until just then. I learned that a card might seem like a card but that card means the whole world to them or the soup might seem like just soup but them loved that soup so much. I was surprised that so many people were there and they loved the soup.

My role at the Women's Rescue Mission was serving trays. I also passed out bread. I contributed by making them happy. My favorite part of the service project was seeing all of the women smile. I liked seeing them smile because if we had not made them food they would not have had a meal that day. One connection I made was with a lady who was so thankful. We had a great converstion about the soup. I learned to always be thankful for what you have because during any meal you may have there are lots of people with no food. I had a graet time

My role in the Nashville rescue mission was to serve food and pass out bread. One thing I saw was when I walked around with the hot bread I heard people say look hot food then, I realized that they probably haven't had hot meal in a while or ever. That was my favorite part seeing all the happy faces on the women and children's faces and talking to them.
