Reflecting on Hearts of Service Day

Dear students,

I had a wonderful time volunteering with you and your families at the Nashville Rescue Mission. I learned a lot about myself as well as the importance of giving back to the community we live in. Volunteering takes more than showing up for a few hours. It takes preparation, planning, action, and, now, reflecting. I want you to reflect on your time spent at the Nashville Rescue Mission. Please answer the following questions:

  • What was your role(s) at the Nashville Rescue Mission? How did you contribute?
  • What was your favorite part(s) of our service project and WHY?
  • Name some connections you made during your time at the Nashville Rescue Mission.
  • What is something new you learned from this experience? Be specific! Also, were you surprised by anything you saw or heard?
Please make sure you answered each bullet point before you publish your comment. Double check your comment for punctuation/spelling mistakes.

I cannot wait to hear about your day.

You teacher,
Ms. B

  1. I was sick that day and I am sorry it sounded like a lot of fun helping the woman at the homeless shelter and I am sad I was not there to help.

  2. I worked as handing out drinks. They all seemed grateful, because the all said, " Thank You." That meant tot me that they were grateful and hoping. I was surprised when they all wanted to play a game. They all seemed to like the game a lot. A connection I made was that we all seemed to be having fun, and being grateful for what we have.

  3. My role was helping int the garden. It was so much fun. My group and I weeded their garden and helped with composting. My favorite part was when I went up yo the kitchen to see the food being served and I met a young woman. She had a little child with her named Madeline. Her little girl was so sweet and kind. I made a connection with the Nashville Rescue Mission because they have a garden and so does our school. I learned that helping others is very important because some people aren't as fortunate as we are. We should love our neighbor as our self. Being at the Nashville Rescue Mission taught me that every once and a while you need to help others around you.

  4. When i went to the womans shelter i helped clean the seats and windows. We washed the seats with smelly stuff. My favorite part was going to the kitchen and asking people how the soup was. I felt really good when i left because the soup is most likely the only nice meal for a while.

  5. I was picking up their cigarettes at the mission. My favorite part of the trip was seeing a little girl named Madline who was two, and she gave me a hug.We all were human, had clothes, food, and hair that made us all the same. I was surprised when I saw a lady who was reading the bible, smoking , and yelling at birds.

  6. My role was working in the kitchen. I helped by serving drinks and napkins to the women in the cafeteria. My favorite part was when I was serving lunch to a woman that was late. When I gave the lady her food, she said," Thank you sweetheart!" and I felt really good inside when she said that to me. Some connections that I made: that we are loved with an unconditional love and we all are special in our own way. I learned that not all people a fortunate.

I learned that we all have the same feelings and thoughts, because we are all grateful for the things that we have.

  13. At first I was in the garden, then I went to help in the kitchen. In the garden I pulled out weeds. In the kitchen I basically talked to people witch was pretty fun. One of my favorite parts was when I started talking to this really nice lady, and I asked her "Do you like basketball?" She said "I loved basketball when I was your age." That was a connection that she liked basketball when she was my age. Something that surprised me was when I saw a boy about my age playing basketball, and man he was so good. He could do the Dr. J. That was how my experience went when I went to the Nashville Rescue Mission.

  15. I was in the garden group. We pulled weeds and dug deep into the ground. My favorite part was pulling out these monster weeds. I saw that every group was doing something to help the head people, and not the people. It was really fun.

  16. I was serving the food in the kitchen. I was thanked a lot of times and some friends and I went over to all of the tables and asked if it was good. They even asked what the recipe was for the soup. We told them it was some of the vegetables from our school garden. One even said that her daughter went to Oak Hill but is in college. I felt really good contributing to this project that made people happy for their food that they don't get every day.

  17. My task that day was working in the classroom. Not knowing what I was going to do was a difference but I also thought to myself that this will make a family and many others happy. I was touched by the way they acted to us. I took courage just to say "Happy Valentines Day" to some Ladies we didn't know. I Also made a very great friend at the shelter, her name was Madeline. She was 2 years old and she was there with her mom and her older sister. She was very cute and I could tell she loved all of the Oak Hill Students coming to see her, the women and getting ti help at the shelter.

I also went into the dining hall to hang out with the women and children while I also took a few pictures with them. My favorite part was when we were picking out the weeds in the butterfly garden. I liked it the best because we were helping the community while we were helping the women and children that lived there. I also liked it because we felt like real gardeners instead of just little helpers. I learned that not all people are as fortunate as we are. I am I glad I contributed food and service for them.

My favorite part about working in the garden was when a women would walk by us and say how good the food was that we made. My other favorite part was meeting this one women who had a really cute little girl. We talked to her and she said that she also has a 6 year old. The little girl was only 2. It made me fell bad for all the little kids that have such hard lives like that. It made me feel like i was very lucky. It made me feel happy because it sounded and looked like all of them were very happy.

  28. I worked in the kitchen. My favorite part about working in the kitchen was when the people ate the soup it gave them a big smile on their face because it always made me happy to see the smiling. A connection i made was serving when i served gave people napkins i t just made me happy I just think a nicer side of me came out when i saw the their smiling faces. What i learned during this trip is that i should always keep my eyes and heart open because these people don't have what i have and these people may be having tuft times in their lives when mine is perfect i have all the toy i could dream i want, but these people don't and the kids hare they don't have what i have so that is why i need to keep my heart and eyes open.
