Point of View

Dear Readers,

We have discussed point of view in class. We learned about first person, third person limited, and third person omniscient. Then we analyzed some of Patricia Polacco's books and from who's point of view the story is told.

For example, Pink and Say was written in third person limited. The story is told from Say's perspective, but a narrator is telling it because it uses the pronoun "he." As a reader, we do not know everything, but only the thoughts and feelings of Say.

In our historical fiction book clubs, we have analyzed our book's point of view. What point of view is your independent reading book told? How does the point of view influence how the story is told, and what you know or do not know?

I look forward to reading about your book's point of view and why it matters.

Be sure to answer both questions in complete sentences, and edit your work before you submit it.

  1. My book is called The Tale of Despereaux by Kate Dicamillo. I think this book is from Third Person Omniscient. Because the author is zooming in on one person Despereaux. It is only talking about what he is thinking and not what anyone else is thinking.

  2. I'm reading Wonder Stuck. I think the point of view is Third Person Limited. I think that because the Narrator is telling the story only about the main character Ben. I think this influences the story because the story is about a kid named Ben who finds out about this book called Wonder Struck. Also the book is about Ben who's mom died when he was little, and he goes into her room and finds all these things that he never knew about. This book is kind of like a mystery put together with a realalistic fiction.

  7. My book The Mysterious Benedict Society is written in third person limited. It is third person limited because it uses he, she, her, and, him. It is also third person because it is only talking about Reynie the boy, and his point of view. And how feels.

  9. My book is called Ink Death and so far I think it is Third Person Omnicient. Why? Because the storyteller is like a god in my book. Like when Meggie was lying to her mom about her dad going to the Ombra castle. The storyteller knew that Meggie felt guilty. It also has alot of felling inside it.

    Dear Ms.Blackmon,
My Historical Fiction book is The Buffalo Knife. It is about a kid named Andrew but people call him Andy. He does not know what is set forth for him when he travels to the French Salt Lick. He is expecting it to be a great trip because, he will be able to shoot the Indians that don’t like white people. He is traveling with his friend or going to be his best friend for the trip and his family. His friends name is Isaac he has a lot of sibling like Andy. Is a brave hunting outdoors man. So the day before the trip Uncle Aswell caught up to him and gave him a Buffalo Knife. Andy had never had a Buffalo Hunting Knife ever before he just had a pocket knife. He thought he could kill about every Indian out in the wild and the bison, deer, bears with that one knife. So when he got on the wagon he reached into his pocket to show off his Hunting Knife to Isaac and Ralph his brother. His dad and Mr.Brown were steering the flatboat. He had to sleep on the hard wooden floor every night. The worst part was the shoals on the bottom of the sea. So when the fathers went to go eat Isaac and Andy had to steer the flatboat. They got in a fight that Isaac was weak and Issac got so mad he hit Andy and he fell off the flatboat. Andy was knocked out cold and was sinking and going towards a big rock. He hit the rock and was scrapped and right before he was totally going out he was picked up and brought back on the flatboat.
After all that Andy didn’t talk to Isaac for the rest of the day. They fought Indians and got stuck in the shoals millions of times but still fought back. Every night Andy would think of Ralph and Uncle Aswell. He had to eat the same things every breakfeast, lunch, and dinner. He got tired so when they stopped he picked up some leaves and brought them to his Ma. While he was picking them he saw a deer and a grizzly bear going at it. He told Isaac to watch but Isaac said he wasn’t that interested in Hunting and the Outdoors. And that made Andy really think he was tougher than Isaac. Finally they arrived at the French Salt Lick. Andy went straight to the forest. He heard Uncle Aswell talking to someone. Andy asked,”Why are you here in the forest and not at the Salt Lick. Uncle Aswell asked,”Why are you not here in the forest we’ve been camping for about 2 days?” Then they went back to the Salt Lick and everyone was happy to see Uncle Aswell and Ralph. And at night Uncle Aswell told them what had happened on the way. He and Ralph had to go through tribes and camps of Indians and fight bears and Deer for meat so they didn’t starve to death.
